IMPORTANT: Today is the last day to take the Commercial Property Tax Survey of DC Small Businesses

CNHED’s Neighborhood Commercial Corridor Working Group is conducting a short survey to gather input from local small businesses on the cost of doing business in the District of Columbia. This survey was developed in response to concerns that the changes to the District’s commercial property assessment process, as of FY 2015, may be having an adverse effect on local small, independently-owned businesses.

If you are a small business owner, please answer the survey questions; it only takes a few minutes.

The collected information will be used to educate and inform District agencies and DC Council members, and to make a compelling case for changes to the commercial property tax.

The deadline to complete the survey has been extended to Thursday, November 30th.

Safety and Security in Adams Morgan

Safety and Security are a big part of the Adams Morgan Partnership BID's mission, and we believe our efforts have contributed to what most people agree is a much safer neighborhood. Of course in a neighborhood with as many people (residents and visitors) as we have, there are always going to be problems, and we work closely with MPD to do as much as we are able to mitigate any issues and keep our streets as safe and friendly as possible.

If/when you have a safety or security concern, please do the following:

  • If there is criminal activity either active or just discovered, call 911. Even if you didn't witness the crime, it's important to report it. If someone breaks into your business and doesn't steal anything, you may be tempted not to report it, but it's important for the police to know when things like that happen. They use all incidents to see patterns emerge and track behaviors to apprehend suspects.
  • If you see something suspicious, call 911.
  • If you are having recurring safety/security/cleaning issues, please get in touch with Brian Barrie (202-536-9515). Examples include persistent issues with loitering, urine (or other), graffiti, bulk trash, drug exchanges/paraphernalia, etc.

"Eco-Trees" available at the Adams Morgan Farmers Market

From our friends at Licking Creek Bend Farm:

We've been farming sustainably on the Licking Creek Bend Farm since 1972. Although we rotate vegetable fields yearly, we have about 8 acres of marginal land Christmas trees have proven to be a viable and earth-conscious choice. Going against industry standards, we grow trees without the use of herbicides (which stop the growth of weeds, but pollute the soil and water), pesticides or artificial colors. The results have been attractive, natural-looking, fresh- cut trees free of pesticides, sprays or colors. Although more intensive manual labor is used to grow them, we keep them affordable at $20 - 125 a tree. (Customers are encouraged to come in the spring and help plant new trees).

HERE’S WHAT WE HAVE AVAILABLE THIS YEAR:

  • CHARLIE BROWN TREES - These trees are all imperfect and have their own character. $20 – 40 range.
  • COLORADO BLUE SPRUCE ** (The tallest of our trees – 6 ½ up to 12 ft). Takes 22- 25 years to grow. Natural shape. Great for candles or heavy ornaments. Citrus- like aroma (sharpish needles). $55 – 125.
  • DOUGLAS FIRS - A popular tree. Soft needles, nice aroma. 6 – 10 ft. $50 – 100.
  • CON-COLOR FIRS - Soft needles, 6 – 9 ft. $50 – 85. Nice citrusy aroma! Very few.
  • WHITE PINE - These are the heirloom trees. Soft needles, looks pretty. Cannot support heavy ornaments though. 6 – 10 ft. $45 – 95. Not too many.
  • DIG UP YOUR OWN TREE - If you want to dig and burlap a tree, you have to be able to transport it yourself. Cost is $45.
  • TABLE TOP TREES - We will have some “table top” trees (3 – 4 ft) and even a few I can try to cut in such a way that the tree can grow back and be re-shaped. These will sell for $30 – 35.
  • WREATHS/ROPING - Plain wreaths are $12.00 with tree order; $14 without. Ditto with ordering roping. Both limited. So order soon!

If you are planning to give a tree as a gift to a teacher, a limited-income family, or community worker, you can have them contact us to come and pick one out in your price-range. We discount gift trees. If you know of a family who can’t afford a tree, we’ll have a limited number of trees we can donate anonymously.

HOW TO ORDER:
Please email esiegel2@igc.org and place your order WHICH MUST INCLUDE: 1. your name, 2. email, 3. phone, 4. type of tree, 5. height, and 6. pick up location, 7. when you want to pick up, 8. wreath order, 9. Rope (#ft) order, ASAP. We'll bring trees down to the Adams Morgan Farm Market (8:00am – 1:00pm) until December 19th. Please pay by check. Please mark your pick up date on your calendar. Bring bungee cord and rope. If you’d like to ride up to the farm and pick a tree, I like the company.

The trees are fresh cut for you, so if you don’t pick it up, it will have been cut for naught. There’s nothing sadder this time of year then seeing a lone tree abandoned. We feel their pain!
Happy Holidays

Solar consultant for your building/business

From Steven Bosak, Solar Consultant:

DC has the best incentives for solar in the country right now, due to the fact that DC has a very aggressive Renewable Energy Portfolio standard that drives up the cost of Solar Renewable Energy Credits (SREC). Buildings that go solar are often able to re-coup their investment in under five years; and from then on, the revenue they pull in from selling power back to the grid and from selling their SRECs is pure profit.

The company I work with has been doing solar installations on DC residential and commercial buildings for more than two decades. Solar Energy Services is very easy to work with and has a long list of happy clients. I just did an installation on two buildings owned by the Brookings Institution last year.

Let me know if you'd like more information or to schedule a presentation.

Seminar: From Amazon to Zillow -- How Landlords are Landing Tech Tenants as the D.C. Region Transforms into a New Tech Capital
Date: December 5, 2017
Time: 7:30 am - 9:30 am
Venue: ULI Headquarters/ ULI Washington
Address:
2001 L Street NW, Second Floor
Washington, DC 20036 United States
Washington D.C.’s economy has experienced a dramatic shift from being a government town whose industry relied primarily on the public sector. A recent report from Cushman & Wakefield listed Washington, D.C. as the #3 “Tech City” in the nation (behind San Jose and San Francisco). With intensified capital investment, a highly-educated workforce, and an emphasis on attracting and retaining talent through livability, the D.C. metro region has transformed into an economic powerhouse with an emphasis on technology. D.C. has been able to entice expansions and relocations from the country’s top firms, most recently with Nestle and Yelp, who now call the metro area home. In the hunt for Amazon’s HQ2, Washington, D.C. is considered a favored contender amongst a short-list of other top-tier cities.
The ULI Young Leader’s Group Education Committee is proud to present a panel of real estate and economic development professionals who are actively marketing the D.C. region to top tech employers. This event will present three case studies of projects that are representative of the success in the District, Maryland and Virginia. These projects will face off and panelists will share their insights on how they were able to attract and retain tech-oriented tenants:
