100th Anniversary of the Knickerbocker Theater Disaster
|
Join the Adams Morgan community on
Friday, January 28th
at 6:00pm
for a candlelit memorial marking the 100th Anniversary of the Knickerbocker Theatre Disaster. Learn about the largest, peacetime single-day loss of life in the history of the District of Columbia and hear the stories of those who tragically lost their lives when the roof of the theater collapsed under a record 28-inches snow. There will also be a reading of the names of the victims of the tragedy.
The event will take place at 6PM at the public plaza at 1801 Adams Mill Road, NW near the bulletin board kiosk so we can look to the opposite corner where the Knickerbocker once stood.

We've lost a member of our family
|
We learned last Thursday that Adams Morgan lost a member of our family.
Scott Bennett was well-known to anyone who has spent time in the neighborhood over the last 30+ years. He was loved by everyone who knew him. He was quick with a smile and a "How you doing kid?"
He was already a longtime-fixture in the neighborhood when he and his wife Arianne opened the Amsterdam Falafelshop on 18th Street and then began franchising. When he wasn’t serving the best falafel and fries in the city, he could be found all over the neighborhood walking his dog Dax, riding his bike to Nationals baseball games, or eating at one of the neighborhood restaurants. He loved to support his neighbors' businesses.
Scott Bennett was Adams Morgan. He embodied the best of the neighborhood and he will be deeply missed.

As we struggle with this sudden grief, we are still trying to figure out how to properly memorialize Scott. In honor of his most burning passion (SCUBA), we want to sponsor some children in DC to experience what it is like to 'fly under water like Superman', as Scott would always say. We will endeavor to work with some of his favorite local dive shops and pools to give that first underwater experience to awaken new passionate divers.
And while we are at a loss to figure out what is the perfect way, we also would like to install a memorial for a man who so completely pulled people into his orbit and jumped so enthusiastically into their lives. We welcome your thoughts on how to do this.
We are so grateful for your love, as we, his friends and family, plan both a living and permanent memorial to our larger-than-life guy.

Save the Date! Adams Morgan Partnership Annual Meeting
|
The Adams Morgan Partnership BID (AMPBID) annual meeting will be held on Tuesday, March 8 at 5pm.
We will have elections for 5 positions on the Board of Directors (3 property owners and 2 business owners). Additional nominations (per the process in our bylaws) will be accepted until January 27th (40 days prior to the meeting). The ballot will also include a vote on revisions to the AMPBID Bylaws. The revised bylaws will be mailed along with the ballots in early February. All members of the BID should have received a postcard with details about the meeting.

Residential and commercial property owners are required to clear snow and ice from their sidewalks
within the first eight hours of daylight following the end of the storm
.
The District Snow Team also encourages residents and commercial property owners to apply abrasives such as rock salt, deicer, or non-clumping kitty litter to the sidewalks around their properties prior to snowfall to reduce the possibility of icing and to prevent slips and falls. The Snow Team uses pet friendly deicer on District pedestrian bridges.

Streeteries and parklets are not to be used during a Snow Emergency.

The Great Streets Retail Small Business Grant is the hallmark grant opportunity for the Great Streets program. The grant has helped hundreds of small businesses renovate their storefront to attract new customers and drive profitability.
The purpose of the grant is to support existing small businesses, attract new businesses, and transform designated commercial corridors into thriving and inviting neighborhood centers.

This session will provide time for applicants to ask questions about the FY22 Great Streets Retail Small Business Grant .
Sessions begin Friday, January 21 and occur daily from 1:00 pm – 1:45 pm until Friday, January 28, 2022.

The Department of Small and Local Business Development (DSLBD) is excited to announce they we will be accepting applications for the first round of Food Waste Innovation Grants.
These grants will provide support for restaurants, food manufacturers, shared commercial kitchens, and commercial corridors like Main Streets and Business Improvement Districts, to minimize food waste.
Reducing food waste in the District’s food businesses can cut food and waste costs, reduce rodents, and reduce carbon emissions.
