18th Street Pedestrian Zone #2 set for September 4!
|
The debut of the Adams Morgan Pedestrian Zone (AMPZ) on Sunday, August 21 was great, despite the intermittent rain throughout the day and into the evening. The response to the street closure was overwhelmingly positive and we're excited for even more participation at the next AMPZ this Sunday, September 4.

The pedestrian zone will be located along 18th Street NW between Kalorama and Columbia Roads NW and will also occur on
Sunday, October 23 from 12pm-10pm.
We may add an early November date and we anticipate the street closures would resume in the Spring of next year.

Attention restaurants within the boundaries of the AMPZ
: Please encourage your guests and food delivery services to utilize the designated and staffed Pick-up/Drop-off (PUDO) zones located just outside the AMPZ. As a reminder, there will be 3 Pick-up/Drop-off (PUDO) zones to allow for both rideshare and food delivery vehicles to temporarily park/idle. These zones will be clearly marked with large sandwich board signs and will be actively monitored by TCOs to prevent vehicles from being parked for more than 10 minutes. The PUDO Zone locations are indicated on the attached map and are located at:

Adams Morgan Day coming up on Sunday, September 11
|
For 44 years, Adams Morgan Day has been a family-friendly celebration with music, art and activities for all ages. Adams Morgan Day is planned entirely by volunteers, and as Washington, DC’s longest running neighborhood festival, We welcome residents and visitors alike to meet our neighborhood businesses, artists, and service organizations.
The organizers are elated to be coming back to an ALL in-person festival on Sunday, September 11, 2022.

The Adams Morgan Farmers Market is open for the season on
Saturdays from 8:30am – 1:00pm
, rain or shine, at UNITY PARK, Columbia Rd and Euclid St. NW. The market will be open every Saturday through December.
Music at the Farmers Market
With help from a grant from the Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR), we have hired a musician to perform at the farmers market on Saturdays.

Comcast RISE Investment Fund grants
|
Comcast is doing a second round of its
Comcast RISE Investment Fund
grants in Washington, DC. This means they are awarding 100 DC small businesses owned by People of Color and Women with $10,000 each. Comcast awarded $10K grants to 100 DC small businesses in 2021. This represents a $2M investment by Comcast in the success of DC small businesses!

$1.3 Million in Grants for Small Businesses
|
Walker's Legacy is a proud founding partner of the
Coalition to Back Black Businesses
. From 2020 through 2023, we will distribute $5,000 grants to applicants each fall, followed by mentorship and training. A select few will receive $25,000 enhancement grants the following summer.
Through the Coalition, Walker's Legacy will work together over the next four years to provide over $14 million in grants, training, and resources to empower Black-owned small businesses in distressed communities that have long been struggling with economic growth.

Harassment Prevention Training for Restaurants

Online Harassment Training for Employees and Managers
Get your team trained with ServSafe's Sexual Harassment Prevention for the Restaurant Industry program to help prevent workplace harassment. This online, interactive program, was designed specifically for employees and managers working in food service.

DC Restaurant Harassment Training Requirement - Forthcoming:
As a result of the legislation that repealed Initiative 77 in 2018, DC restaurants are required (per the Tipped Wage Workers Fairness Amendment Act) to fulfill 3 important requirements this fall to ensure they are in compliance with the law.
1. Post required Employee Rights documents/posters in the workplace where employees will see them.

2. By
September 30, 2022
: DC businesses that employ tipped employees must have a written sexual harassment policy that describes how to file a sexual harassment complaint.
This policy must be distributed to all employees and be posted publicly.
Restaurants must file their policy with the DC Office of Human Rights and certify that staff have received the harassment policy. Additionally, the number of sexual harassment complaints must be reported to DC on a yearly basis.
The first deadline for 2020 and 2021 reporting is September 30th, 2022.

as well as information on how to report a violation. Note that the form asks you to upload your current sexual harassment policy. If you need help creating a harassment policy,

3. By December 31, 2022 - DC restaurants who employ at least one tipped wage worker are encouraged to complete their first sexual harassment training by a certified trainer approved by the Office of Human Rights (OHR)
. OHR is currently working on compiling an approved list of trainers. DC businesses must complete a training every two years either virtually or in person, and OHR encourages that the first one be before 12/31/22. After Labor Day, RAMW will be sending further details on this as OHR finalizes their details, as well as contacts for OHR approved trainers restaurants can work with, but we wanted to get this on your radar now.

WEC Career and Education Fair
|
Washington English Center invites you to participate in our Diversity Career and Education Fair, to be held on Friday, September 16, 2022 from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM.

The fair is open to our current adult English language students, graduates and the general public. WEC has partnered with community and professional organizations to recruit attendees and we anticipate candidates from a wide range of industries, functions and career levels to attend.
The purpose of this fair is to pair employers and community partners who have active or future employment or volunteer vacancies to fill with suitable candidates. WEC would also like to introduce students to training and study options in the region as many will need further licensing and education to break into the industries they practiced in their home countries. The hybrid model also means that we have students in 12 states outside of the DMV and 21 countries who are available for global and remote positions.
The Diversity Career and Education Fair will be held online via zoom. Additionally, if you are not available to participate in the fair, there are opportunities to join us on IG Live or visit our location in downtown Washington, DC.
