Save the Date: October 14 AMPBID Annual Meeting and board elections

Annual Meeting - October 14

The Annual Meeting of the AMPBID will be Tuesday, October 14, 2014 at 5pm, at the Festival Center at 1640 Columbia Road, NW. Postcards were mailed a couple weeks ago to all property owners and business owners. Today's mention in the newsletter is the third one.

AMPBID Annual Meeting Election Process

At the October 14th Annual Meeting, BID members will have the opportunity to vote for candidates for 5 board slots: three property owners and two business owners. The board members currently holding those positions have been renominated for another term and have agreed to serve if elected.

Those are:

* Steve Greenleigh, property owner

* Pat Patrick, property owner

* Jeffrey Schonberger, property owner

* Al Jirikowic, business owner

* Saied Azali, business owner

AMPBID Annual Meeting Election Process

Each person eligible for election as a member of the Board may be nominated by: 1) the nominating committee, or 2) by a member petition submitted to the Chair of the Nominating Committee (Matt Wexler) at least 30 days prior to the date of the meeting (so additional nominations must be received by September 15th); provided that only business owners can nominate business owners and property owners can only nominate property owners and a petition shall require the signature of no less than ten (10) members to nominate a member of the Board. Each nominee either shall be present at the annual meeting or shall consent to such nomination by a written document.

Voting

Per the by-laws, any properties for which BID taxes are over 60 days delinquent, may not vote nor may they nominate members to the board.

For each class of member, the ballot will list all the candidate names, and members will vote for the number of open slots in that category. For example, there are two business owner slots. All members will have the opportunity to vote for two candidates from the list of all business owner candidates.

Proxies

Proxy votes are allowed.

Pursuant to the BID bylaws, those interested in voting in the board elections by proxy can either contact the BID to request a proxy form, or can develop their own form, as long as it includes: the date of the meeting at which it is applicable (October 14) full names, addresses and the dated signatures of both the individual issuing the proxy and the witness(es) to the signature. The proxy voter can be anyone to whom the property or business owner designates to vote for them and DOES NOT have to be a member of the Adams Morgan Partnership BID. All proxy forms must meet all these criteria to be accepted.

The BID will have a proxy form available by fax, mail and by email.

Any questions on this process, please call Kristen at the BID office 202-997-0783 or email her at: Kbarden@adamsmorganonline.org .

On Sunday, September 14th, from mid-morning to seven in the evening, the 36th Annual Adams Morgan Day festival will be in full swing. “One Community. One Love. One People…We Are One” is the ongoing theme of this year’s festival because this event celebrates all cultures together and the creative synergy that comes from that mix.

Adams Morgan Main Street Group, with the help of many dedicated volunteers, organizes this annual festival known for celebrating international cultures, cuisine, arts, music, and bringing visitors to local storefronts. Residents and visitors of Adams Morgan will have a diverse offering of live music, street performances, and dance acts along with artwork, food, services, craft, and gift vendors.

And, as customary every year, the shops, restaurants and sidewalk cafés will be open for business.

Long-time favorites, the Florida Avenue and Columbia Road live music stages at each end of 18th Street will be slightly modified to take place on SunTrust Plaza and the new Marie-Reed soccer field respectively. Headliners will include DC’s own jazz/funk/go-go group, the legendary Chuck Brown Band and internationally renowned jazz pianist Marcus Johnson.

The SunTrust Plaza stage will highlight the diverse culture of the neighborhood as Trio Caliente kicks off the performances at 11:30am.

Arts on Belmont opens the festival at 10 a.m. in the 1800 block of that shady side street with 100 artists and artisans showing their paintings, graphics, photography, sculpture, crafts, and jewelry – all available for sale and in all price ranges.

The interactive Dance Plaza, hosted by Cheryl Hardy, has a line-up that will include such acts as the energetic DC Casineros and the famed local Malcolm X Drummers and Dancers. Located on the corner of 18th and Florida, expect the Dance Plaza to be bigger and better than ever.

The Kid’s Fair will be located at the Marie-Reed playground with activities and amusements for children and families which will include family fun favorites like face painting, moon bounce and more.

Always a popular collector’s item, the commemorative festival t-shirt will be available throughout the festival area. This year the design was commissioned to Adams Morgan resident and famed artist, Aniekan Udofia ( www.aniekanudofia.com ). These shirts will go fast as there will only be a limited amount pressed for this special design.

Visitors are encouraged to use Metrorail, Metrobus and the Circulator bus.

Limited parking will be available at The Park at Adams Morgan, the former Security Storage and now a five-level parking garage at 1711 Florida Avenue.

We also encourage people to bicycle, since this year we are introducing a safe and secure Bike Valet on Marie-Reed basketball court.

Volunteers are still needed and opportunities are still available for working at stages, pre-festival, and on the day of the event for set-up and breakdown.

Great Streets legislation - we need your help!

In March 2014, Ward 1 CM Jim Graham introduced legislation to include Adams Morgan, the 14th and U Streets Corridor and a portion of Columbia Heights to the Great Streets Program.

The legislation is c alled:

B20-0721 - U Street/14th Street NW Great Streets Neighborhood Retail Priority Amendment Act of 2014

and can be found here:

http://lims.dccouncil.us/Legislation/B20-0721?FromSearchResults=true

This legislation if passed, would enable Adams Morgan businesses to apply for the Great Streets Small Business Capital Improvement Grants . The boundaries of the Adams Morgan streets included in the legislation need to be expanded to include the full AMPBID boundaries but that was already discussed with CM Bowser and CM Graham. See below for more information about the grants.

The legislation was referred to Ward 4 CM Muriel Bowser's committee and a hearing was held on May 7th. The legislation has not moved out of the committee and there is no indication that CM Bowser intends to move it out of committee to go to the full DC Council for a vote.

So we need your help!

If you would like Adams Morgan businesses to be eligible to apply for these grants please send an email to:

mbowser@dccouncil.us and rhawkins@dccouncil.us

Urge them to move the legislation out of committee for a full vote by DC Council.

Here is more information about the grants and the upcoming rolling application process:

District beer and wine stores (class B retailers) are due to

renew their alcoholic beverage licenses by Wednesday,

Oct. 1, 2014.

The Alcoholic Beverage Regulation Administration (ABRA)

mailed renewal notices to class B retailers in August.

Licensees should return completed renewal packets in

person to ABRA, which is located at 2000 14th St., NW,

Suite 400 South, 4th Floor.

Before renewing, licensees should ensure they are in good

corporate standing with the

Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs and that all

outstanding taxes and fines are paid.

Payment for licenses can be made for the next three years or for

one year only; however, payment is due at the time of renewal.

A late fee of $50 per day will be assessed for any late payments,

which may not exceed the cost of the license.

Annual Payments Due for Taverns
