1) Papal Visit to DC - September 22-24

During Pope Francis' visit to DC there will be a lot of road closures, parking restrictions and changes to public transportation routes and public works services. The areas of the city most affected by this are:

1) the Apostolic Nunciature of the Holy See (Vatican Embassy)

2) the area around the White House

3) Cathedral of St. Matthew (on Rhode Island Avenue between Connecticut and 17th Street)

4) Conference of Catholic Bishops

5) St Patrick's Catholic Church and

6) the US Capitol

2) SAVE THE DATE: October 13th Annual Meeting and board elections

Annual Meeting - October 13

The Annual Meeting of the AMPBID will be Tuesday, October 13, 2015 at 5pm, at the Festival Center at 1640 Columbia Road, NW. Postcards were mailed to all property owners and business owners in August.

AMPBID Annual Meeting Election Process

At the October 13th Annual Meeting, BID members will have the opportunity to vote for candidates for 5 board slots: three property owners and two business owners. Four board members currently holding those positions have been renominated for another term and have agreed to serve if elected.

Those are:

* Jessica White, property owner

* Matt Wexler, property owner

* Louis Courembis, property owner

* Constantine Stavropoulos, business owner

One business owner, Joanna Robinson, is leaving the board at the end of the term and Justin Abad, from Cashion's and Pop's Sea Bar, has been nominated to run for her seat.

AMPBID Annual Meeting Election Process

Each person eligible for election as a member of the Board may be nominated by: 1) the nominating committee, or 2) by a member petition submitted to the Chair of the Nominating Committee (Steve Greenleigh) at least 30 days prior to the date of the meeting (so additional nominations must be received by September 13th - no additional nominations were received other than the Nominating Committee's recomendations); provided that only business owners can nominate business owners and property owners can only nominate property owners and a petition shall require the signature of no less than ten (10) members to nominate a member of the Board. Each nominee either shall be present at the annual meeting or shall consent to such nomination by a written document.

Voting

Per the by-laws, any properties for which BID taxes are over 60 days delinquent, may not vote nor may they nominate members to the board.

For each class of member, the ballot will list all the candidate names, and members will vote for the number of open slots in that category. For example, there are two business owner slots. All members will have the opportunity to vote for two candidates from the list of all business owner candidates.

Proxies

Proxy votes are allowed.

Pursuant to the BID bylaws, those interested in voting in the board elections by proxy can either contact the BID to request a proxy form, or can develop their own form, as long as it includes: the date of the meeting at which it is applicable (October 13) full names, addresses and the dated signatures of both the individual issuing the proxy and the witness(es) to the signature. The proxy voter can be anyone to whom the property or business owner designates to vote for them and DOES NOT have to be a member of the Adams Morgan Partnership BID. All proxy forms must meet all these criteria to be accepted.

The BID will have a proxy form available by fax, mail and by email.

4) Adams Morgan Porch Fest - October 3

Calling All Musicians!

We’re on our third year of Adams Morgan PorchFest — a celebration of the deep musical talent that exists in the DC metro area. Last year 40+ musicians/bands participated including members of the National Symphony Orchestra. We transformed the front porches, patios and stoops of our homes and businesses into “stages for a day” where local talent could be heard by all for free. It was a ton of fun, thanks to many of you, with dozens of local music acts playing about at a dozen locations in Adams Morgan. Neighbors gathered, kids danced, and the streets came alive thanks to the generosity of musicians sharing their art.

We’re doing it again Saturday October 3rd from 3pm-7pm. But we can’t do it without the singers, stand up bass players, horn blowers, guitar heroes, indie rockers, violin virtuosos, and all the other talented folks who believe in bringing music out of clubs and into the light of day. From famous jazz legends like Charlie Byrd and Keter Betts to homegrown soul acts like Father’s Children, Adams Morgan has a rich music tradition that PorchFest hopes to continue with your help.

Here’s how it works:

We ask each participating group or individual to play a set or two on Saturday, October 3rd between 3-7 pm. We’ll match you with a host and a time slot, put your name and a brief description of your music (that you provide) on maps we’ll hand out that day and feed you pizza at the after party that night. We’ll work with local media to get coverage — in the past one of the local television affiliates broadcast one of our bands live — so while it’s not a paid gig at this point, it can be great exposure. Acts are encouraged to sell their music, t-shirts etc. if they’d like, but the best way to think of this is as a community service/volunteer type of activity aimed at music appreciation.

to Christ House, a local Adams Morgan non-profit.

apple pie you will make. Local Adams Morgan businesses are welcome to

enter the competition.

Anyone who enters before the cut off can select their apples at the Licking

Creek Bend Farm stand at the Adams Morgan Farmer’s Market on Saturday,

October 17 FOR FREE.

Please bring a card with your ingredients so that we may accommodate dietary

restrictions. Please make a minimum of 3 pies.

You can make more but please let us know how many you plan to make if more

than 3. We hope that folks will be able to enjoy tasting the pies as well.

6) Great Streets Grants - DEADLINE EXTENDED and clarification about annual revenue!

DMPED announced its 2016 Great Streets Retail Small Business Reimbursement Grant Notice in the July 24th DC Register.

This year eligible businesses may apply for up to $50,000. Adams Morgan is included in this year's eligible corridors thanks to legislation that we asked CM Graham to introduce in March 2014 and which CM Nadeau helped complete earlier this year.

Please be advised that the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development (DMPED) has issued a technical amendment to the Request for Applications (RFA) for the FY2016 Great Streets Retail Small Business Reimbursement Grants. The technical amendment is available online on the Great Streets website . Please note that, among other changes, the grant application deadline has been extended to:

7) Lunar Massage is closing...:-(

9) The Diner hosts Literacy Nooks on Sundays

The DC Public Library will launch Literacy Nooks at restaurants around the city on Sunday, September 20 from 8 am to 12noon. The Diner will be hosting the Literacy Nooks in Adams Morgan. Literacy Nooks are a designated space within each restaurant with a rug for kids to sit on, age-appropriate and quiet books and toys for kids to play with while they wait or while their parents are enjoying their meal!

Children’s librarians from neighborhood libraries will present story times; face painters will also be on site. A portion of the morning’s proceeds will be given to the DC Public Library Foundation to help support early literacy initiatives throughout the District. The three restaurants will continue to provide books and toys provided by DC Public Library on site for children while their parents enjoy their meals.
