1) Special Meeting on June 9 of all AMPBID members - board meeting immediately to follow

Adams Morgan Partnership Business Improvement District will hold a Special Meeting on Thursday, June 9, 2011 at 5pm at the Third District Police Headquarters, 1620 V Street, NW, Washington, DC.

At the April 14, 2011 regular monthly AMPBID Board of Directors meeting the board voted affirmatively (10 to 1) to approve revisions to our Bylaws and 5 Year Work Plan. There was a quorum present at the meeting.

According to Section 13.01 (page 27) of these Bylaws, after the bylaws and registered BID Work Plan have been affirmatively voted on by the Board of Directors, both documents must then be ratified by a vote of BID members, in person or by proxy, at a duly convened meeting of the Members at which a quorum shall have been obtained.

To meet the obligations of our bylaws, we will hold a Special Meeting on Thursday June 9, 2011 at 5 PM to ratify both documents.

The next AMPBID Board meeting is Thursday June 9 immediately following the Special Meeting which begins at 5 PM at the Third District Headquarters of MPD, 1620 V Street, NW, Washington, DC.

On the agenda will be reviewing the proposed FY2012 Budget, an update on the 18th Street Streetscape project, including a report on the DC Water and sewer line replacement work, a report from the marketing committee, and an update on the Unity Park vendors.

2) Eat Local First Week - July 9- 16, 2011

Think Local First is looking for local businesses to be a part of the kick-off week for the Eat Local First Campaign (www.eatlocalfirstdccom). This is a highly visible week-long event that will put businesses in the eyes of consumers and organizations that care about sourcing locally.

You can be a sponsor, vendor for street party or participant of Farm-to-Restaurant week . Sponsorship begins at $250

Eat Local First DC is a local food campaign centered on connecting, promoting and assisting local farms, local restaurants, and the organizations and people that are making locally-grown food more accessible in DC community.

The kick-off week is a week-long celebration of these things. From July 9 to 16, residents can participate in an array of events that celebrate the local food movement. From an urban foraging adventure, to vegan/raw non-cooking demonstrations and a rocking farm-to-street party, Think Local First hopes inspire DC residents to incorporate eating local food into your everyday life.

3) Metro Update - Memorial Day weekend closures

In order to comply with National Transportation Safety Board recommendations, Metro will be closing the Orange/Blue Line between the Federal Center SW and Minnesota Ave and Benning Road Metrorail stations Memorial Day Weekend.

On the Orange and Blue Lines, service between the Federal Center SW and Minnesota Ave and Benning Road Metrorail stations, and the four stations between – Capitol South, Eastern Market, Potomac Ave and Stadium-Armory Metrorail stations – will be closed during the Memorial Day Holiday Weekend from 10 p.m., Friday, May 27, to closing on Monday, May 30. During that time, the agency will undertake work to replace four track switches at the Eastern Market Metrorail station.

On the Blue and Orange lines, buses will replace trains between Federal Center SW and Minnesota Ave and Benning Road stations, and four stations—Capitol South, Eastern Market, Potomac Ave and Stadium-Armory—will be closed. The work will begin at 10 p.m., Friday, May 27, and continue through closing on Monday, May 30.

Metro encourages customers to travel on other days or use alternate travel options if traveling in this area. While bus shuttles will be available to get around the closures, traffic congestion is predicted , as the Stars, Stripes and Spokes motorcycle event at RFK Stadium is expected to attract thousands of motorcycle enthusiasts.

To assist riders who must travel through the work zone, Metro will operate free shuttle buses between the Federal Center SW and Minnesota Ave and Benning Road Metrorail stations. Customers should build an extra 40 minutes into their travel plans if they need to pass through the work zone.

Last Train Times and Travel Tips: Metro has announced specific details regarding train times and headways of the Blue and Orange trains as well as shuttle bus information.

Metro employees will be available at Federal Center SW, Capitol South, Eastern Market, Potomac Ave, Stadium-Armory, Minnesota Ave and Benning Road stations to provide customer assistance.

May 27-30 Weekend Red Line Service

From 10 p.m., Friday, May 27 through closing on Monday, May 30, Red Line trains will share one track between Friendship Heights and Grosvenor-Strathmore stations as Metro repairs tunnel leaks, and between Judiciary Square and Takoma stations as personnel make repairs to the surface beneath the rails to produce a smoother ride.

Throughout the weekend, Red Line trains will depart Shady Grove and Glenmont every 24 minutes. More frequent service will be available between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. with trains operating every 12 minutes at most Red Line stations.

Weekend Travel Tips

Customers traveling to the Memorial Day concert at the U.S. Capitol are encouraged to exit at Union Station, except those traveling from Northern Virginia, who may wish to exit at L’Enfant Plaza. In addition, D.C. Circulator bus service is available between Union Station and Navy Yard via Capitol Hill for those traveling to the concert or to weekend baseball games.

4) Event at Christian Science Church - May 28

Healing will be the topic when the Adams Morgan Christian Science Church hosts a free talk at the historic building at 1770 Euclid Street, NW on Saturday, May 28. Heloisa Rivas of Boston, MA will speak on "Find Home Where You Are." The talk will be in English at 11am, French 1pm, and Spanish 3pm. Mrs. Rivas tours the world sharing ideas about prayer and healing. Free parking behind the church and child care is available. For more information contact Prue Lewis at: pruelewis@aol.com.

5) InternsROCK - June 10-19, 2011

The InternsROCK week-long event planned for June 10-19, 2011 has a fully updated website and businesses can sign up to participate in the program directly online. http://www.internsrockdc.com.

About InternsROCK!

In 2010, The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars (TWC) in conjunction with MTV-U and Destination DC, launched the first InternsROCK! A city-wide intern appreciation week. The initiative honors approximately 20,000 interns who flock to the nation’s capital each year to test-drive their careers at local businesses, nonprofits and government agencies. Last year, 60 restaurants, museums, sporting venues, concert halls and boutique retails outlets came together and offered a variety of discounts to all interns in Washington, DC.

In its second year, InternsROCK! will be held June 10-19, 2011 and the program has been expanded to include a kick-off event, new student workshops and even more partnerships with community businesses.

Proven Success

The first ever InternsROCK! was an overwhelming success with 1,500 student participants from more than 1,000 internship sites and we expect that number to double. Of the interns that took part in the program last year, 67% visited 1–3 participating business and 25% visited 3–5 businesses.

How does it work?

Interns who are in DC for the summer can pick up free bracelets at The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars to receive discounts from area restaurants, retailers and music venues. Interns will also be invited to exclusive InternsROCK! events.

Does the intern need to be affiliated with The Washington Center to participate?

No. Interns throughout the Washington, DC area are encouraged to participate. To be included, interns must show proof of internship with a letter from their internship host when they pick up their InternsRock! bracelets.

What types of discounts are available to students?

Generally, interns will receive 20% off, 30% off or buy-one, get-one free discounts at participating businesses. In addition, businesses are also encouraged to provide free services or products.

How does a local business participate?
