18th Street Steatery Pilot program
|
All of the existing streateries on 18th Street, NW between Kalorama and Columbia Roads have been torn down and are currently being replaced with new modular structures that include platforms, railings, and most will have awnings for shade.
We are very appreciative of Mayor Muriel Bowser’s support to make Adams Morgan’s streateries look their best and function in the safest, most accessible, and friendliest way. Thanks for choosing our neighborhood to showcase the new streatery guidelines. We look forward to having lots more people enjoy world class, diverse dining al fresco in Adams Morgan.
Key Points:

The new structures will increase the safety, accessibility, and aesthetics of streateries on the corridor

New structures will be compliant with the new guidelines (to be released on Monday, September 30) for a permanent streatery program and are meant to demonstrate the future of the program
-
Curbside changes will also be made to increase access and mobility along the corridor
-
Installation of new structures began Monday, 9/16 and will be completed by September 30

Drag Storytime
! The event will take place in Unity Park directly across from
The LINE DC
(the triangle park at Columbia, Euclid, and Champlain Streets). Katie Magician will be reading stories about love, inclusion, and friendship… books that the entire family will enjoy! DC Public Library will be joining us too. Don't forget to make a brunch or lunch reservation at one of the many nearby restaurants, go shopping, visit a salon, and continue supporting our local businesses.

The 11th Annual Adams Morgan Apple Pie Baking Contest and the 16th Annual Licking Creek Bend Farm Heirloom Apple Tasting returns to Adams Morgan on Saturday, October 19! The highly-anticipated community event will take place in front of The Line Hotel and directly across the street from the farmer’s market in Unity Park at Euclid and Champlain Streets NW.
All the slots for apple pie baking contestants have been filled.

DC's favorite neighborhood music festival returns on Saturday, November 2. Our last PorchFest in May featured about 80 bands on 20 stages and despite the damp weather was a huge success and we're working on making the November edition the best yet
Make plans to be in Adams Morgan on November 2 for an amazing variety of live music, great food & drinks, specials from several dozen businesses, and yes, 18th Street will be closed to vehicle traffic.

The event will take place on Saturday, November 2nd. We have just launched our Call for Volunteers, which you can
find here
. For this event, we have two different volunteer positions, and each one has two shift options:
1) Headquarters Volunteer:

First Shift: 12:30 to 3:30 p.m.

Second Shift: 3.15 to 6.30 p.m.
2) Porch Volunteer
-
First Shift: 1:30 to 4:30 p.m.
-
Second Shift: 4.00 to 6:30 p.m.
Volunteers will receive a free PorchFest Volunteer t-shirt and will have access to our event green room where non-alcoholic refreshments and snacks will be served. We hope to see you there, this event could not take place without our amazing team of volunteers!

Rainbow History Project's WorldPride 2025 Exhibit is Coming -- Help make it Happen!

For
WorldPride 2025
, the
Rainbow History Project
is creating an exhibit on the evolution of Pride activities in DC: "Pickets, Protests, and Parades: The History of Gay Pride in Washington."
The exhibit tells the stories of the local LGBTQ Pride movement and how the pickets and protests of the 1960s led to parades and celebrations of the 2020s. The exhibit centers the voices of the event organizers and includes the critics of Pride and the intersection of Pride and other movements for equal rights and liberation.

A Farewell to DC Circulator
|
After 19 years of service to the District of Columbia, DC Circulator will be coming to an end.
The service wind down will begin on October 1, 2024, with complete elimination of service on December 31, 2024.
Service Elimination Updates:
-
Rosslyn-Dupont Circle (RS-DP) route will be terminated effective October 1, 2024.
-
Late-night service on Woodley Park-Adams Morgan (WP-AM) and Georgetown-Union Station (GT-US) routes will be terminated effective October 1, 2024. Service will end at 9 pm daily.
-
Starting October 1, 2024 all routes will operate on 20-minute headways.
-
Last day of service on all remaining routes is December 31, 2024.

Re: Attorney General Inquiries Into Paystubs, Paid Sick Leave
Members have contacted us in recent weeks about inquiries they have received from the DC Attorney General’s office.
-
What’s Happening:
Following well-publicized charges from the Attorney General against restaurant owners, complaints from workers alleging wage and other violations at their own workplaces have grown. In response, the Attorney General has sent inquiry letters to several restaurants.

What to Know:
The Attorney General is mainly investigating two areas:
-
Itemized paystubs:
By law, restaurants are required to provide itemized paystubs that separate out wages, tips (cash and credit card), and other additions and deductions.

Paid sick leave:
Restaurants are also required to provide paid sick leave. Sick leave policy should be signed by all employees each year. Learn more about the

What else:
Restaurants should also have written tip pooling policies and a worker roster.

From the AG:
“To address the high volume of complaints we have received from District restaurant workers, our Office is sending out letters of inquiry to restaurants about which we have received complaints. It is our hope that, in many or most cases, these letters of inquiry will reduce the necessity for sending more expansive investigatory subpoenas. Where our Office identifies violations of District law, we will seek to remedy those violations and to obtain restitution for affected workers.”

We Know:
These inquiries come at a time when members are already contending with a challenging dining landscape, including continued burglaries and robberies, ongoing rising costs, and declining or flat sales and customer traffic.

What’s Next:
The AG’s office last week reached out to RAMW to help to provide outreach and education to our members. More information and resources to come.
Cashless Retailers Exemption Introduced
DC Councilmember Christina Henderson last week proposed exempting businesses that sell alcohol from requirements to accept cash payments. The bill was co-introduced by Councilmember Brooke Pinto.

The Proposal:
The
Entertainment Establishment Employee Safety Act
would provide an exception to the rule requiring businesses to carry cash, which is currently paused until January.

Yes, But:
Many businesses that do not sell alcohol also have cashless policies for reasons including late operating hours and single-employee shifts.

Hearing:
The bill has been referred to the Committee of the Whole, where it needs to have a hearing before the full council can consider the proposal.
