The next meeting of the AMPBID Board of Directors is Tuesday May 14th at 5 pm at the MPD Third District Headquarters - 1620 V Street, NW in the Snyder Conference room on the first floor.

We will be joined by Councilmember David Grosso, who was elected to the Council of the District of Columbia as an At-large Councilmember on November 6, 2012, to represent residents in all eight wards. David brings a wealth of experience having worked with Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton and former Councilmember Sharon Ambrose, in addition to his experience in the private sector.

David Grosso is a native Washingtonian. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy from Earlham College and holds a Juris Doctorate from Georgetown University. His visit with us was rescheduled from March 2013.

We look forward to meeting David and hearing about the plans he has for his work on the Council. Please think of questions you would like to ask him before the meeting.

Board members: Please be on time so we can begin the presentation and Q&A promptly and conclude the meeting by 7 pm. Please call or email Kristen at 202-997-0783 or kbarden@adamsmorganonline.org if you are unable to attend. Otherwise we will assume you will be there. Thanks.

Meeting with MPD on Friday May 17th to hear about plans for Operation Adams Morgan Part 3

Captain Aubrey Mongal from the MPD Third District will brief the business community on Friday May 17th at 1pm at Grand Central Restaurant at 2447 18th Street, NW about MPD's plans for Operation Adams Morgan Part 3 which will begin on June 1, 2013.

As many of you know, in the Summer of 2011, MPD launched Operation Adams Morgan which was a multi-agency approach to send a message that Adams Morgan is a great place to eat, shop, play and live but not for criminal activity. Operation Adams Morgan Part 2 was in the Summer of 2012.

Please join us to hear about the third year of this program and the changes that will be implemented this year. Please also stay tuned for an announcement about training that MPD will be offering to Adams Morgan businesses using their newly released manual " Best Practices for Nightlife Establishments". This will be later this month or early June. The manual is designed to help owners and managers of night-time establishments develop a safe nightlife atmosphere.

Registration for the metropolitan Washington region’s annual Bike to Work Day 2013 on Friday, May 17 is now open at www.biketoworkmetrodc.org .  This year’s Bike to Work Day will be bigger than ever with more than a dozen new pit stops added, for a total of 72 in the region -- District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia – offering cyclists refreshments, entertainment and giveaways as part of the celebration.

Bike to Work Day, organized by Commuter Connections and the Washington Area Bicyclist Association (WABA), prompts thousands of area commuters to bicycle to work to highlight and promote this clean commute option.

“Bike to Work Day is a great way to promote bicycling as an alternative to driving alone to work.  Ten percent of BTWD participants reported that they started cycling to work after participating in their first BTWD event,” said Nicholas Ramfos, Director of Commuter Connections. “And it encourages those who already bike, to do it more often. More than 20 percent of BTWD participants say cycling is now a regular part of their commutes.”

Last year there were 12,700 registrants, and coordinators expect registration will again break records as novice and experienced cyclists join together to celebrate bicycling as a fun, healthy and wallet-friendly commute alternative. The first 12,000 registrants will receive free Bike to Work Day t-shirts at the pit stop of their choice and become eligible to win great prizes such as Jamis bicycles. Registration and event details including pit stop locations, sponsor information and how to join a convoy are at www.biketoworkmetrodc.org .

Commuter Connections and WABA encourage new and experienced bicycling commuters to be prepared and offer the following resources:

· Learn more about Bike Commuting: Learn about commuting to work by bicycle at www.commuterconnections.org – click Commuter Programs, then Bicycling.

· Ride with others in a Commuter Convoy: Commuter convoys on Bike to Work Day will be led by experienced bicycle commuters, and many routes are available. Find a convoy near you at: www.biketoworkmetrodc.org/join-a-convoy .

· Brush up on cycling skills: Gain bike-commuting confidence by participating in Confident City Cycling Classes . Learn to safely share the road with cars, other bikes, and pedestrians: http://www.waba.org/education/adult.php .

· Learn the rules of the road: For tips on biking to work check out the "Bicycling to Work in the Washington Area: Guide for Employees and Employers" available through Commuter Connections at www.commuterconnections.org .

Business Regulatory Reform Task Force - please send suggestions for changes

As you may know Mayor Gray swore in member of the new Business Regulatory Reform Task Force in early February 2013. The task force's mission is to develop strategies to streamline the regulatory process and make it easier to start a business and create jobs in DC. David Goldblatt and Nick Majett are the chairs. (Full press release: http://mayor.dc.gov/release/mayor-gray-launches-business-regulatory-reform-task-force )

They are charged with identifying existing laws and regulations that otherwise might impede the progress of a business. Additionally, the task force will also make necessary recommendations, including proposed legislation, to eliminate any inconsistent regulations administered by DCRA.

Kristen is going to attend the next meeting of the task force on June 5 at 8:30am at DCRA. We could be very helpful in identifying cumbersome regulations, especially for small businesses.  It would be great if we could compile a list for the task force. Please send Kristen suggestions to: kbarden@adamsmorganonline.org by May 31. Thanks.
