Idle Reduction Outreach Event - August 8th

DDOT along with the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (MWCOG) and DDOE began a program to acknowledge and reward bus and truck drivers who comply with the region's diesel idling laws.

This program rewards drivers who voluntarily are observing the law and encourages them to avoid fines, save money and cut fuel costs.

Nominations for drivers are accepted monthly and anyone can nominate a driver by mail or email. Nomination forms can be found at: www.turnyourengineoff.org/campaign_recognition.html Drivers are eligible to receive a commendation letter suitable for framing as well as dinner for two at restaurants in the Washington/Baltimore metropolitan region.

DDOT, MWCOG and DDOE are going to be conducting one of their street team events in Adams Morgan on Wednesday August 8th between 2 and 4 pm to nominate delivery drivers for abiding by the District’s idling laws.

If any AMPBID members would like to join them in nominating drivers, please let Amber Carran-Fletcher know. Her contact information is below. They will be passing out gifts to the drivers and will talk with them briefly to thank them for not idling and get nomination information.

Donations Needed for Car Free DC Day - September 22

Car Free Day is quickly approaching! Last year, there was a huge increase in the amount of people who pledged to go car free on September 22 with a total of over 11,000 pledges. This year, DDOT would love to see the number of participants spike again, but they face a unique challenge in marketing the event because September 22 falls on a Saturday this year.

For this reason, DDOT and goDCgo, are making a special effort to get the word out to all District residents instead of concentrating our promotional efforts solely on “commuters.”

To reach a broader audience, their marketing efforts will include a two-pronged approach. The first will be to highlight all the car free activities that are available on Saturday through our interactive map on the goDCgo website, which will feature various popular community and sporting events throughout the District on September 22. The interactive element of the map will show people the different modes of transportation available to get them to those events, encouraging them to leave the car at home!

As the second part of their marketing efforts, goDCgo will host a giveaway on their website encouraging people to take the Car Free Day pledge and tell about their favorite ways to get around without a car.

Everyone who shares their story will be automatically entered to win prizes—and that’s where you can help!

They are asking businesses for a donation of $50 or more to offer as a prize (a restaurant gift card/theater tickets/store merchandise/etc.)

The Council of Governments organizes the regional Car Free Day promotion (and website) and has agreed to promote the contest on the “thank you” page following each pledge. This is a great opportunity to showcase DC neighborhoods and events to a regional audience. Any establishment that is able to donate will be promoted through their social media outlets, on the goDCgo website, in our email communication and beyond.

WMATA bus service will continue on 18th Street beginning August 12

Effective Sunday, August 12, 2012, Routes 90, 92, 93, 96 and X3 will return to their regular routing on 18th St in Adams Morgan, as they were before DDOT’s streetscape project. Notices will be posted at stops on the detour route on Florida Ave and on Columbia Rd advising customers that stops will be re-activated in both directions on 18th St NW at California St and Belmont St. The stop on the north side of U St, east of 18th St (in the direction of the Duke Ellington Bridge), will also be re-activated.

Be advised that on August 12, the stops on Florida Ave at 18th St and at T St will be removed. Sign heads on Columbia Road between California St to 18th St will be changed to indicate that those routes will no longer serve these stops after Saturday, August 11, 2012.
