1) Adams Morgan Porch Fest is October 3, 2015

Calling All Musicians!

We’re on our third year of Adams Morgan PorchFest — a celebration of the deep musical talent that exists in the DC metro area. Last year 40+ musicians/bands participated including members of the National Symphony Orchestra. We transformed the front porches, patios and stoops of our homes and businesses into “stages for a day” where local talent could be heard by all for free. It was a ton of fun, thanks to many of you, with dozens of local music acts playing about at a dozen locations in Adams Morgan. Neighbors gathered, kids danced, and the streets came alive thanks to the generosity of musicians sharing their art.

We’re doing it again Saturday October 3rd from 3pm-7pm. But we can’t do it without the singers, stand up bass players, horn blowers, guitar heroes, indie rockers, violin virtuosos, and all the other talented folks who believe in bringing music out of clubs and into the light of day. From famous jazz legends like Charlie Byrd and Keter Betts to homegrown soul acts like Father’s Children, Adams Morgan has a rich music tradition that PorchFest hopes to continue with your help.

Here’s how it works:

We ask each participating group or individual to play a set or two on Saturday, October 3rd between 3-7 pm. We’ll match you with a host and a time slot, put your name and a brief description of your music (that you provide) on maps we’ll hand out that day and feed you pizza at the after party that night. We’ll work with local media to get coverage — in the past one of the local television affiliates broadcast one of our bands live — so while it’s not a paid gig at this point, it can be great exposure. Acts are encouraged to sell their music, t-shirts etc. if they’d like, but the best way to think of this is as a community service/volunteer type of activity aimed at music appreciation.

10:00am – 11:30am – Sign up for People’s Choice Judges – This is first

come first serve. The first 4 people to sign up will become the

People’s Choice Judges

10:30am – HEIRLOOM APPLE TASTING

12:00noon – APPLE PIE CONTEST

12:45PM – Announcement of winners

There is a good chance there will be more than a dozen varieties.

After the contest, pies will be sold by the piece for $5.00, the

proceeds will go to a local Adams Morgan charity.

LATER THAN FRIDAY, OCTOBER 16 at 12 noon with your name, phone

number and type of apple pie you will make. Local Adams Morgan

businesses are welcome to enter the competition.

Anyone who enters before the cut off can select their apples at the Licking Creek Bend Farm stand at the Adams Morgan Farmer’s Market on Saturday, October 17 FOR FREE.

Please bring a card with your ingredients so that we may

accommodate dietary restrictions. Please make a minimum of 2 pies.

You can make more but please let us know how many you plan to

make if more than 2. We hope that folks will be able to enjoy

tasting the pies as well.

3) International Day of Peace events in Adams Morgan -

September 21

International Day of Peace is on September 21st this year. To

celebrate there are a series of events in Adams Morgan.

Join a range of local peacebuilders throughout the day for

conversations and actions that help build a more peaceful world.

10- 11:15 am- Coffee at The Potters House with Eugene Puryear,

Medea Benjamin and Dominic Moulden.

Topic- "No Justice, No Peace"

12:30- 1:45 pm- Brown Bag lunch at Songbyrd Record Cafe with

Stuart Anderson and Chic Dambach. Topic- "How Hard is Peace?"

*please bring lunch as the cafe is normally closed on Mondays

3-4:15 pm- Write response letters at The Potter's House to poetry

written by youth currently incarcerated. Topic- "Letters of Peace"

6:30-8pm- Drinks at Bossa Bistro + Lounge with Ari Roth and Aaron

Shneyer. Topic- "A Creative Peace"

As citizens flood the streets and political events with chants of “No

Justice, No Peace,” we ask “What exactly is Justice?” Join local

and national activist Eugene Puryear, Co-Founder of Code Pink

Medea Benjamin and ONE DC Resource Organizer Dominic Molder

for a discussion on the current justice system in America,

alternative justice systems globally, and how exactly we link

together a larger movement towards Justice and Peace.

Do you want peace but are unsure of how to work towards it? Join

Stuart Anderson, the founder and executive director of Family and

Friends of Incarcerated People, and Chic Dambach, peacebuilder

and author of Exhaust the Limits, for a discussion on how to build

political, social and economic movements that resolve conflict and

build peace.

Letter Writing with Free Minds Book Club; “Letters of Peace”

The Potter’s House; 3 pm -4:15 pm

Join Free Minds Book Club and provide feedback on the writing of

their young and adult book club members currently incarcerated.

It is a simple yet powerful way to support the self-awareness and

change of these members, as well as an opportunity to read great

writing and meet other community members!

“A Creative Peace”; An Evening with Aaron Shneyer and Ari Roth

Bossa Bistro + Lounge; 6:30 pm - 8 pm

“Creativity involves breaking out of established patterns in order to

look at things in a different way,” writes Edward de Bono. Join

Mosaic Theatre’s artistic director, Ari Roth, and Aaron Shneyer,

the founder and executive director of Heartbeat, for a discussion

on how music, art and the creative process can help communities

re-imagine the world around them in order to build peace.
