2023 AMPBID Annual Meeting and Elections

In addition to remarks by Board President Jonathan Cho and Executive Director Kristen Barden, we were joined by Ward 1 Councilmember Brianne Nadeau and our featured speaker, Director of the Mayor's Office of Nightlife and Culture Salah Czapary,

2023 AdMo Art Walk;
Applications close tomorrow

DC Arts Center
, in partnership with AMPBID, is proud to present the 2023 AdMo Art Walk — a free, new way to experience art! Every year, local businesses in Adams Morgan are partnered with local artists in DC, who are invited to display their work all month long in the business’ storefront. The result is a neighborhood-wide public art exhibition where Adams Morgan becomes your own personal art gallery!
This year's AdMo Art Walk will run from April 3 through April 30.
This year we have more artists and businesses participating than ever before, and while you’re free to walk the streets of Adams Morgan and admire an impressive selection of artwork displayed in various storefronts in a self-guided walking tour, members of The DC Arts Center will be offering guided tours on select weekends in April!

Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathon returns this Saturday, March 18
|
The Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathon will once again make its way through Adams Morgan this year. As in previous years, the runners will enter the neighborhood via the Ellington Bridge and Calvert Street, continuing to the corner of Adams Mill Rd. and Columbia Rd. where they will turn left (east). The course continues east on Columbia Rd. before turning right on to Harvard St. and on into Columbia Heights.
Most road closures and detours on Saturday will be in effect between the hours of 7:00am and 2:00pm. Streets will reopen on a rolling basis as soon as the last participant has passed and all course support materials have been removed. Please review the

for more information. Residents and businesses located near the race course are urged to plan ahead and be aware of road closure schedules and alternate access routes.

Women’s History Month Business Spotlight: Amanda Preske, Owner of Because Science

March 1 marked the start of Women's History Month, a month dedicated to honoring women's contributions to American history. To celebrate, we are featuring a few of the many women-owned businesses in Adams Morgan! We encourage you to support these local businesses this month and beyond. Get to know Amanda Preske of Because Science in this Business Spotlight Q&A.

What makes your business unique? Tell us more about Because Science!
Amanda Preske:
Because Science isn’t just a science gift shop- we also make a lot of the products we sell! I have a background in semiconductors and started Circuit Breaker Labs to transform broken electronics into art and jewelry. The Circuit Breaker Labs studio is co-located with Because Science, so our customers can actually see us making art.

: Why did you go into business? Was there a single event that spurred you into it?
AP
: I’ve always loved making things by hand, whether it was art, jewelry, or decor. I’m also incredibly analytically minded (see above about being a scientist) and found that business beautifully blends all the things I love: science, art, and analytics.

: What is your motivation/what gets you up every morning and keeps you focused?
AP
: I absolutely love seeing the physical manifestation of ideas. Everything starts with an idea, and to put the finishing touches on an awesome thing, whether it’s a whole store or a new product we made, is so fulfilling. I also adore our team at Because Science and our customers: it’s my mission to make the world a little better every day, and that starts with caring for people.

: What’s your favorite part about the Adams Morgan community and why?
AP
: From the perspective of a business owner, it’s absolutely wonderful to have our neighbors come in and talk about how what we’re doing is important. That sense of belonging, even as a newcomer, feels like the heart of AdMo opened to us and I’m so delighted to have been accepted that way.
AMPBID
: What’s something your customers may not know about you and/or your business that might surprise them?
AP
: Science is for EVERYONE! We have gifts for kids AND adults, and our programming (the Craft Lab event space is launching in June!) caters to all skill levels and interests. Science is a process, not a thing you own, so everyone who comes in can experience science, whether or not they’re a “scientist.”

Free Sober Rides Offered For St. Patrick's Day 2023 In DC Region
|
St. Patrick's Day celebrations can end with a free ride home as part of a DC area program to keep impaired drivers off the roads.
The Washington Regional Alcohol Program's 2023 St. Patrick’s
SoberRide program
is planned between 4 p.m. Friday, March 17 and 4 a.m. on Saturday, March 18. Because the holiday is considered a high-risk time for intoxicated driving, the program will offer a Lyft ride up to $15.

Bike to Work Day is on May 19 -- Registration is Now Open!
|
The League of American Bicyclists began Bike to Work Day as part of Bike Month in 1956. Over the years, Bike to Work Day has grown into a widespread event with countless bicyclists taking to the streets nationwide in an effort to get commuters to try bicycling to work as a healthy and safe alternative to driving alone. In the Metropolitan Washington region, Bike to Work Day has grown from a small group of a few hundred in 2001 to an all-time high of 18,700 participants in 2017.
The
Adams Morgan pit stop will be at Unity Park
again this year. Adams Morgan regularly has one of the highest registration rates in the city and we plan on having refreshments and other goodies available to riders in addition to the free t-shirt. We'll be updating you with more information as the event gets closer.
