Life Asset is a non-predatory financial resource center whose mission is to help alleviate poverty by providing affordable financial products, services, and education. Their services will include financial training, a loan fund and a credit union. Life Asset was the last ministry that Rev. Gordon Cosby was working on before his death in March 2013. Rev. Cosby was the founder of the Church of the Saviour in the 1940s. Today over 40 ministries carry on the legacy by working with low income people to provide a myriad of services from housing, education, job training and placement, health care, post-incarceration rehabilitation, addiction treatment and more.

Mural restoration begins today
Restoration Begins today on Historic Adams Morgan Mural
One of the oldest surviving murals in Washington, DC will get some much needed attention when local artist Juan Pineda begins restoration work on “Un pueblo sin murales es un pueblo desmuralizado (“A people without murals are a demuralized people.”)
The mural is located on the northwest facing wall of the Kogibow Bakery at 1817 Adams Mill Road, NW in the Adams Morgan neighborhood of Washington, DC. It was originally designed by Chilean brothers Carlos (Caco) and Renato Salazar as a project of the Centro De Arte nearly 40 years ago. The need for the restoration of the mural now comes from the 5.8 magnitude earthquake in 2011 that resulted in numerous cracks in the wall.
“The mural is made up of messages depicting struggle” says Pineda, who believes that saving the mural means saving the story it tells about the immigration experience. “It’s important artistically, but culturally and historically as well.”
“We have just so few of the murals that were painted directly on walls in DC during the 1970’s and 80’s. It is important that they all don’t just become memories or pictures in history books. They can still speak to our communities” says DCAC director B. Stanley. Kristen Barden, Executive Director of the Adams Morgan Partnership BID, adds “This is truly a community effort. Just like in 2005 when the mural was most recently restored, the individual and organizational support behind this project shows how important it is to Adams Morgan. It’s a source of pride here.”
A partial list of funding sources for the restoration includes: the DC Commission for Arts and the Humanities, DC Arts Center, ANC1C, Adams Morgan Partnership BID, Perseus Realty, Ward 1 Councilmember Jim Graham, local poet and activist Quique Aviles, and Kogibow Bakery owner Mahn Phung.

Dining Out For Life - April 24th
On Thursday, April 24th, several restaurants in Adams Morgan will be participating in Dining Out for Life, an annual event put on by Food & Friends. Food & Friends provides nutritious meals to children and adults battling HIV/AIDS, cancer, and other life-challenging illnesses.
All of the following restaurants will contribute 25% of their dinner proceeds on April 24th, unless otherwise noted:

Community film series have been enthusiastically supported across the city, and the Adams Morgan Partnership BID is excited about presenting one here with the Marie Reed PTA.
Adams Morgan Movie Nights will be held at the new soccer field next to the Marie Reed Elementary School at 2201 18th Street, NW, corner of 18th and California Streets, NW and will be a family friendly way to bring the community together, broaden the perception of what Adams Morgan has to offer and will benefit residents and businesses alike.
The recent upgrades to the site, including hillside seating, make this one of the best neighborhood screening locations in the city. This season’s series will include a range of award winning films with an emphasis on classic and/or animated features. The Adams Morgan Partnership BID is organizing this series along with the Marie Reed Elementary School Parent Teacher Association, which will be selling refreshments at the event to raise funds for the school.
The Adams Morgan Movie Series is a great chance for you to promote your business leading up to the summer months. We'll be offering Adams Morgan swag bags at each showing (depending on availability) with promo items (coupons/flyers/freebies). Also, we're asking for feedback about a neighborhood stamp card e.g. get X number of stamps and receive discounts at participating businesses. We could kick off the stamp card at the movies and keep it as an ongoing promo.

Taste of Adams Morgan
set for Tuesday, April 29th, from 5:30-9pm.
Last year’s event raised over $3,500 and we need YOU to make this year’s event an even greater success!
Similar to last year,
Taste of Adams Morgan
will provide city-goers with a chance to sample from Adams Morgan’s best restaurants while supporting their neighborhood and Mary’s Center, in the process.

Sixth Annual Summer Concert series - begins May 3
The 6th Annual Adams Morgan Summer Concert Series begins on Saturday May 3rd at 5 pm!

Registration is now open for BTWD - May 16th, 2014
Bike to Work Day 2014 - May 16th
On Friday May 16, 2014 Commuter Connections and, Adams Morgan non-profit, the Washington Area Bicyclist Association (WABA) invites you to join over 10,000 area commuters for a celebration of bicycling as a clean, fun, and healthy way to get to work. Attend one of 79 pit stops throughout D.C., Maryland, and Virginia to receive refreshments, and be entered into a raffle for bicycles being given away. Free T-shirts available at pit stops to the first 14,000 who register and attend.
