Board Elections: AMPBID holds elections every year at our annual meeting in March. The board consists of 15 seats, nine of which are reserved for commercial property owners and six for business owners. Board members are elected to serve three-year terms (unless they are replacing a board member who resigned before the end of their term).  This year's election will be for 6 positions on the Board of Directors (4 property owners and 2 business owners).

If you are a business or commercial property owner and are interested in running for a seat on the board, please reach out to Wendy Hauenstein for more information.

Nominations (per the process in our bylaws) will be accepted until February 2nd. Nominating petitions for board members must be submitted to Kristen Barden, Executive Director, at least 40 days prior to the date of the meeting (February 2, 2023). Petitions must have the signatures of at least 10 AMPBID members. The AMPBID’s nominating committee will present their slate of candidates at the February 14 monthly board meeting.

Postcards with information about the AMPBID Annual Meeting will be mailed to all AMPBID members in the near future.

Applicants seeking to continue operating outdoor dining on the sidewalk must apply for a public space permit for either an unenclosed or enclosed sidewalk café.

Sidewalk café permits are subject to approval by the Public Space Committee (PSC) and typically take 2 to 3 months to process. You may review the PSC public hearing agenda and deadlines for filing applications at their website here .

THIS DOES NOT AFFECT APPLICANTS WITH STREATERIES IN THE STREET, ALLEYS, OR PLAZAS (PARKLET AND OTHER SPECIAL EVENT PERMITS). Permits for Streateries the street, alleys, or plazas are set to expire December 31, 2023, when the temporary Streatery Program is set to end.

Updates from RAMW

And we’re back! Day four of 2023 and DC policy makers have wasted no time getting back to work following Monday’s historic and feel-good swearing-ins.

  • Calling downtown the District’s economic engine , Mayor Bowser pledged to almost double the number of people living in the Central Business District (adding 15,000 residents) over the next five years.
  • A familiar face returns to the Wilson Building: The mayor also named Tommy Wells, current director of the Department of Energy and Environment and former Ward 6 Councilmember, as her new director of policy and legislative affairs.
  • Council Committees: At-Large Councilmember McDuffie maintained his chair of the Committee on Business and Economic Development. Councilmember Bonds will head up the Executive Administration and Labor committee, and Councilmember Pinto will lead Judiciary and Public Safety.

More in this week’s updates:

Hotel tax en route to Mayor’s desk. Council unanimously approved on second reading a 1% hotel tax for tourism marketing. The mayor is expected to sign the four-year legislation, which starts April 1 and is expected to raise $20.7 million annually.

  • What it means for restaurants: Restaurants are not included in the tax but benefit from any boost in tourism, especially from business and international travelers.
  • Stay tuned: RAMW is a partner in the Hospitality Alliance (with Destination DC, Events DC, and the Washington DC Hotel Association) and will continue to share updates about the District’s tourism recovery.

More Back in Session: The Carlos Rosario public charter school, an RAMW partner and the region’s premiere educator and trainer for adult immigrants, is accepting students for its spring culinary arts classes .

Are your certifications up to date? In-person food and alcohol manager classes are held at RAMW’s offices every month. (Or take them online almost anytime.) Renewing and just need to take the test? We can help with that too .

Harassment Training Extended: Speaking of training, DC has extended deadlines for tipped worker harassment training. Businesses have until March 31 to certify they have a policy and to August 31 to complete training. RAMW persists with District officials on the need to make this training less challenging and more affordable. More info and resources to come.

New Year, New Wages Recap: Despite news to the contrary, the DC hourly tipped wage did NOT increase to $6 this month but takes effect sometime before the end of the first quarter while it undergoes Congressional review required for all District laws. (FYI - After our outreach, WaPo corrected their earlier report .)

DMV’s youngest residents still need your help. Chipping in for the RAMW holiday diaper drive is a fast and convenient way to support a great cause. Order and ship directly over Amazon and choose RAMW gift registry at checkout.

Going Green: Applications are now open for the Dis trict Sustainability Awards , which highlight businesses, individuals, and organizations working towards a more sustainable DC.
