Adams Morgan Christmas tree collection starts Wednesday, January 10

The AMPBID Clean Team will be collecting Christmas trees from side streets, bringing them to 18th St. and to Columbia Rd. for DPW to collect them.

Residents should put their trees out on Mondays and Wednesdays and we will work with the drivers to minimize time the trees are on the ground.

DPW Provides Residents with 2 Convenient Options for Recycling Their Holiday Trees and Greenery

With the holiday season coming to a close over the next several weeks, thousands of DC residents will be looking for an environmentally friendly way to dispose of their holiday trees and greenery. The DC Department of Public Works (DPW) is pleased to provide District residents with two easy options for having their cut holiday trees and greenery recycled (no artificial trees).

“The District is committed to waste reduction year-round, including the holiday season,” said DPW Director Christopher Shorter. “These two options ensure residents can dispose of their holiday trees and greenery in an environmentally friendly and convenient way.”

The first option is for residents to bring their trees and greenery, free of charge, to either of the District’s transfer stations. The Fort Totten Transfer Station is located at 4900 John F. McCormack Drive, NE, and the Benning Road Transfer Station is located at 3200 Benning Road, NE.

The second option, also free of charge, is for residents to put their trees and greenery out where their trash and recycling is collected between January 13 and February 2. These items will be collected on residents’ regularly scheduled recycling days during this period. In years past, residents could place their trees in the tree box space, adjacent to the curb. Please note that this is not the case this year, unless that’s where residents’ recycling is normally collected. This collection service is only available to residents who are serviced by DPW. DPW collects trash and recyclables from single-family homes and apartment/condo buildings with three or fewer living units.

Regardless of which option residents choose, all ornaments and lights should be removed from the tree. Residents are also asked not to bag their trees or greenery.

In fiscal year 2017, 327.25 tons of holiday trees were collected and composted by DPW in the District. As a reminder, DPW provides DC residents with up to five 32-gallon bags (bring your own bags) of free compost weekdays, 1 pm to 5 pm, and Saturdays 8 am to 3 pm, at the Fort Totten Transfer Station.

This 45-minute, customized presentation will inform employees and/or military personnel about the physical, economic and legal consequences of impaired driving.

Know your responsibilities when it snows

We're not expecting any snow accumulation in the immediate future, but it's important to be prepared for it and know your responsibilities. Now is the time to evaluate your snow plan and ensure you are ready for it when it happens.

When clearing your own snow, please do not pile it up around the trash cans.

DC Snow removal mandate (via DPW):

All residential and commercial property owners must remove snow/ice from the sidewalks around their property within the first eight hours of daylight after the storm ends. The Department of Public Works enforces the “Winter Sidewalk Safety Rules,” by citing residential and commercial property owners who have not cleared their sidewalks within 24 hours after the storm ends. Residential property owners may be fined $25 and commercial property owners may be fined $150.

Snow Responsibilities:

DC Government:

  • Plows streets and bridges
    Note: Alleys are not cleared by the DC Government or by the BID.

Adams Morgan BID:

  • Works with the DC Government to ensure that all our commercial streets stay plowed.

  • Shovels crosswalks at intersections and puts down eco-friendly ice melt.

  • Clears access to fire hydrants, trash cans, and bus shelters.

  • May be able to lend shovels to businesses for a short period of time, but we have limited resources. Businesses should all have their own snow-clearing equipment.

Business/property owners are responsible for clearing their sidewalks. To prepare, they:

  • Should identify the staff people, or contractor, responsible for shoveling snow and removing ice.

  • Should make sure the right staff person has multiple ways to get to work during/after a snow event.

  • Should have enough shovels, ice breakers, and eco-friendly ice melt to make the sidewalk in front of your business safe.

Be good to your customers and neighbors, shovel early and often, and stay safe!
