Bowser Administration Announces Fourth of July Safety Preparations
|
In preparation for the Fourth of July, the Bowser Administration is sharing the latest updates on the District’s preparations for Fourth of July celebrations.
Residents and visitors are encouraged to sign up for Fourth of July text updates on public safety impacts, road closures, weather alerts, and more by texting JULY4DC to 888-777. Residents and visitors can also visit alert.dc.gov to sign up to receive real-time updates on traffic, weather, and public safety and follow @AlertDC on X.
Beginning at 5:00 p.m. on July 4, Metrorail, Metrobus, or MetroAccess will be free to ride until the system closes.
Please visit wmata.com for alternative public transportation options into and out of the city, as well as any Metro closures.
As part of the District’s regional collaboration to support a safe holiday, coordinate resources, and manage communications across jurisdictions, the Bowser Administration will activate the District’s Emergency Operations Center and Joint Information Center on July 4.
High temperatures are forecasted for the Fourth of July, with a likely heat index of 100+ degrees. Residents and visitors should limit their time outdoors and recognize the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and stroke. Symptoms may include dry red skin, convulsions, throbbing headaches, disorientation, chills, delirium, and coma. Onset of heat stroke can be rapid; a person can go from feeling apparently well to a seriously ill condition within minutes. If you suspect that you or someone you know is experiencing a heat-related illness, call 911.
Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) outdoor pools and spray parks will be open on July 4, while indoor aquatic centers will be closed. Recreation centers and community centers will be closed with the exception of 10 recreation centers that will be open for general use as cooling centers from 11:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.; for locations, visit

|
Washington, DC is preparing to host
NATO’s 75th Anniversary Summit
from Tuesday, July 9 - Thursday, July 11 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center (WEWCC). Organizers anticipate up to 13,000 delegates from 68 countries, utilizing about two dozen hotels and generating a significant economic impact in Washington, DC this summer.
Expect
heightened security and road closures
downtown, particularly in the area around the WEWCC.

What you need to know about the new Daytime Parking Validation Program at Colonial Garage
|
What is the Daytime Parking Validation Program?
Participating businesses will receive monthly validation stickers from Colonial Parking and provide them to customers upon request, giving customers reduced parking rates at the garage on 2421 18th St. NW.
How does it work?
Customers park at the garage and ask you for a validation sticker. You put the sticker on their parking card and they pay a reduced rate when they return to the garage. The program runs from Monday to Friday and includes two hours at a rate of $15, reflecting a $4 discount from the current rate. Cars must be out of the garage by 5 pm each day.
When does the program begin?
Parking discounts will be available starting July 1st. Colonial will monitor program participation throughout July and follow up on its success.
Will this cost me anything?
No! Participation is completely free for businesses. We only ask that you promote the program to customers directly.
How many validation stickers will my business receive each month?
Colonial will begin providing each business with one validation sheet (40 stickers) each month.

Columbia Road Bus Priority Project Construction Update
|
Construction is scheduled to begin on the Columbia Road Bus Priority Project on Monday July 8.
Work will be weather dependent and will begin with site prep work. The first phase of construction will occur between Connecticut Avenue and 18th Street.

Construction will take place after AM rush hour and before PM rush hour on weekdays. Weekend work during the daytime is also possible.

Travel lanes in both directions will remain open so no detours are anticipated.

Keep an eye out for “Emergency No Parking” signs that will be posted in work zones.

Remember to be cautious and patient in work zones.

Preventative Bridge Maintenance Lane Closures on Ellington Bridge

Calvert Street over Rock Creek Parkway
Single lane closure needed on Calvert Street. A proper variable message board will be in place to notify the public of changes.
Lane closures will be between the hours of 9:30 AM to 3:00 PM, weather permitting on Monday July 1 through Saturday, July 13, 2024.

New Overtime Rule Takes Effect
The biggest increase in the federal overtime threshold took effect this week.

The Details:
Salaried workers earning less than $43,888 a year will qualify for 1.5 times pay if they work more than 40 hours a week. That’s up from the current ceiling of $35,568 a year.

More Info:
Most hourly workers are already entitled to overtime pay, but salaried workers are exempt unless they earn less than the threshold set by the Labor Department.

What’s Next:
Business and trade groups are expected to challenge the new rule in court. More info to come.

Better Bus Initiative -- Share Your Input by July 15

Better Bus
is Metro's overarching initiative to improve Metrobus for the region. In the coming years, Better Bus will mean a lot of things for the region, including new facilities, zero-emissions vehicles, improved bus communications, and more bus lanes and transit signals. For the first time in decades, WMATA is taking a fresh and detailed look at their bus service with the goal of serving customers and the region better. They're working to create a Better Bus network that is fast, frequent, reliable, and easier to understand.

Office Closure
ABCA’s office will be closed on Thursday, July 4, 2024, in observance of Independence Day, and will reopen at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, July 5.
Extended Holiday Hours
For Independence Day, alcohol licensed businesses enrolled in the
Extended Holiday Hours Program
may sell, serve, and allow on-premises consumption of alcohol until 4:00 a.m. and operate 24 hours
starting the evening of Wednesday, July 3, and ending at 4:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 4.
Licensees may confirm enrollment by locating their establishment’s name on the
2024 Independence Day roster
