Latin American Movie Night at Marie Reed Field concludes tomorrow!
|
Join the Mayor's Office on Latino Affairs on Thursday, September 28 as their movie series showcasing international films from Latin American countries concludes with Colombian film Cuando las Aguas se Juntan.
The film will be shown on the soccer field at Marie Reed Elementary School (corner of 18th & California Streets, NW) and will begin at approximately 7:30pm. No pets or alcohol are allowed on the field.

The headline guest for the festival is Charming Disaster, which will perform selections from their album Our Lady of Radium (a tribute to Marie Curie), on
Sunday October 1 at 6pm

All activities, projects, and performance by Charming Disaster are free to attend and are offered on a first-come, first-served system. We appreciate donations so we can keep offering these events to all who wish to participate.

Adams Morgan Fall PorchFest: October 14
|
Adams Morgan PorchFest is officially a twice-a-year event with its return on Saturday, October 14 from 2pm - 6pm.
DC's favorite music festival has grown in size and popularity every year and this fall
we're really going big and will be closing 18th Street to vehicle traffic between Kalorama and Columbia Roads during the event!
This year's event will have a headliner at 5pm -- Mark Bryan (of Hootie and the Blowfish) and his band The Screaming Trojans will be playing on 18th Street. Other featured bands include The Experience Band and The Airport 77s.

New this year: PorchFest T-shirts at Neighborhood Retailers
|
In the past buying a PorchFest t-shirt was tricky. They were only available during the four hours of the event and only from the one tent where thousands of people were crowded to get their maps & wristbands. This year we've come up with a better plan -- we'll be partnering with neighborhood retailers including
Urban Dwell
,
Smash Records
, and
Ace Hardware
to offer the shirts for sale for two weeks -- the week leading up to PorchFest and the week after. We've partnered with
Tattoo Paradise
to design the shirt -- it's not quite finished so we can't show it yet, but trust us, you're going to love it.
If you're looking for t-shirts from Spring PorchFest this past May, we'll have those for sale at a discounted price at our HQ tent on 18th Street during the event.

We would like to invite nonprofits located in Adams Morgan to table on 18th Street during PorchFest. PorchFest brings tens of thousands of people into the neighborhood every year and this should be a great opportunity to get info out to a lot of new people. There's no cost to participate but you will be responsible for supplying tables, tents, chairs, and anything else you might need. The street closure is from 1pm - 7pm and the event runs from 2pm - 6pm.

Adams Morgan Apple Festival returns on October 28
|
The 10th Annual Adams Morgan Apple Pie Baking Contest and the 15th Annual Licking Creek Bend Farm Heirloom Apple Tasting returns to Adams Morgan on
Saturday, October 28 from 10am - 1pm
!
The highly-anticipated community event will take place in front of The Line Hotel and directly across the street from the farmer’s market in Unity Park at Euclid and Champlain Streets NW.
The entry form for the Apple Pie Baking Contest is live up on the website at

but all 16 contestant spots have been claimed. We'll continue to accept entries through Friday as alternates in case one or more of the 16 entrants has to withdraw.

You're invited to join the Adams Morgan Partnership BID and the US Attorney's Office for the District of Columbia in a conversation about the criminal justice system in DC. The first session will include a general overview with a focus on the system through the lens of a typical case that might impact businesses. The second session will be an overview of barring notices including who it applies to, when to get one, and how it's enforced. The third session will be an overview of Community Impact Statements, how to write one, when to submit it, and how it can impact sentencing.

Reminder: DC Businesses Required to Accept Cash Oct. 1
Beginning next month, District restaurants, bars, and other businesses will be prohibited from only taking debit, credit, and electronic payments.

The
Cashless Retailers Prohibition Act
, first introduced in 2018, passed by DC Council in 2020, and taking effect this year, is intended to ensure that individuals without bank accounts or access to electronic payments are not discriminated against.

The new law takes effect when the number of businesses not accepting cash is at an all time high, in part because of safety concerns.

Pinto Introduces Package of Public Safety Proposals
Following July's
emergency legislation
, DC Councilmember Brooke Pinto last week proposed a broad set of proposals to address crime and violence.

The Scoop:
Pinto says her
Secure DC Plan
increases accountability for violent crime and gun offenses, gives public safety agencies tools to address hiring and retention, and enhances infrastructure to make schools, recreational spaces, and commercial and transit corridors safe.

Among Pinto’s proposals is one to create a hospitality training program at DC jail for soon-to-be returning citizens.

Expect the public safety package to drive the fall and winter agenda of the Committee on Judiciary and Public Safety, which Pinto chairs.
Wanted: Restaurants for Banned Books Scavenger Hunt
DC library marks national Banned Books Week with the return of its UNCENSORED DC scavenger hunt the first week of October.

Important News About Health Insurance Coverage
During the Public Health Emergency (PHE) enacted during the pandemic, many people in our industry could obtain health insurance coverage through Medicaid. Now that the PHE has ended, people who have health insurance coverage through Medicaid have to renew through redetermination for the first time in several years.
To ensure that important information is received and critical deadlines are met, contact information must be updated with the state agency of residence for redetermination of eligibility of coverage through Medicaid.

Extended Hours for World Culture Festival, Art and Dine All Night --
Registration deadline is Thursday
|
The DC Council passed emergency legislation permitting select alcohol license types to register with the Alcoholic Beverage and Cannabis Board (ABCA) to serve alcohol until 4:00 a.m. and operate 24-hours during the
World Culture Festival
,
Art All Night
, and
Dine All Night
special events.
Extended hours started the evening of Thursday, September 21, 2023, and will end at 4:00 a.m. on Sunday, October 1, 2023.
The emergency legislation also permits venues registered as an Art All Night and Dine All Night participant through
DC’s Department of Small and Local Business Development
(DSLBD) to offer entertainment until 11:00 p.m. outdoors and until 2:00 a.m. indoors during those dates that they are registered with DSLBD to participate.
In anticipation of Mayor Muriel Bowser signing the legislation, ABCA is permitting eligible alcohol venues to
submit a registration form
with a non-refundable $100 registration fee
through 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 28, 2023
.
Note the following:
-
Eligible licensees include On-Premises Retailer, Manufacturer with an On-Site Sales and Consumption Permit, and Temporary License holders.
-
If approved, licensees will be issued a permit that must be posted next to their alcohol license inside the premises.
-
Alcohol sales, service, and consumption are NOT permitted between 4:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m.

Settlement Agreements
and
Board Orders
apply and may affect eligibility.

Registration in
ABCA’s Extended Holiday Hours Program
does NOT extend hours or apply to the World Culture Festival, Art All Night, or Dine All Night.

A non-alcohol licensee that holds a valid certificate of occupancy and has registered with DSLBD to participate in Art All Night or Dine All Night may also register with ABCA.

💸 Commercial Property Acquisition Fund (DMPED)
The Commercial Property Acquisition Fund will provide eligible businesses with down payment assistance of up to $750,000 or 25% of the sale price, whichever is less, for the acquisition of commercial property in the District.
