2023 Annual Meeting and Board Elections
|
Adams Morgan Partnership Business Improvement District’s (AMPBID) Annual Meeting will be held on Tuesday, March 14th, from 8:45am to 11:00am
at
Roofers Union
, 2446 18th Street NW. A breakfast buffet will be available from 8:45am and presentations will begin at 9:30 am. Contact

Board Elections:
AMPBID holds elections every year at our annual meeting in March. The board consists of 15 seats, nine of which are reserved for commercial property owners and six for business owners. Board members are elected to serve three-year terms (unless they are replacing a board member who resigned before the end of their term). This year's election will be for 6 positions on the Board of Directors (4 property owners and 2 business owners).

There are two ways to become a board member nominee: 1) Through a nominating petition, as per the process in our bylaws, those will be accepted until February 2nd. Nominating petitions for board members must be submitted to Kristen Barden, Executive Director, at least 40 days prior to the date of the annual meeting (February 2, 2023). Petitions must have the signatures of at least 10 AMPBID members or 2) through the AMPBID’s nominating committee. The committee will present their slate of candidates at the February 14 monthly board meeting.
Postcards with information about the AMPBID Annual Meeting were mailed to all AMPBID members last week. Ballots for the election will be send in mid-February after the Nominating Committee presents their slate of candidates.

Valentine's Day Storefront Decorating Contest
|
The Adams Morgan Partnership BID is sponsoring our fourth annual Valentine’s Day retail storefront decorating contest. All businesses within the boundaries of the Adams Morgan Partnership BID with sidewalk-facing windows are eligible to participate.
Prizes:
1st Place $500; 2nd Place $300; 3rd Place: $100
Judging will take place on Friday, February 10.
Winners will be announced on Valentine’s Day (February 14).
Businesses are encouraged to begin decorating their windows as soon as possible. Judging will be based on originality, use of space, overall creativity, and other factors as determined by the judges.
Judging will be conducted by a panel consisting of residents and elected officials. None of the judges will have any direct affiliation with participating businesses or be members of the Adams Morgan Partnership BID staff. The community will also be able to vote on their favorites through an online poll on our website from Friday, February 10 through Monday, February 13.

Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathon returns on Saturday, March 18
|
The Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathon will once again make its way through Adams Morgan this year. As in previous years, the runners will enter the neighborhood via the Ellington Bridge and Calvert Street, continuing to the corner of Adams Mill Rd. and Columbia Rd. where they will turn left (east). The course continues east on Columbia Rd. before turning right on to Harvard St. and on into Columbia Heights.
Most road closures and detours on Saturday will be in effect between the hours of 7:00am and 2:00pm. Streets will reopen on a rolling basis as soon as the last participant has passed and all course support materials have been removed. Please review the

Update on Hourly Tipped Wages:
Earlier this week
DC Council set May 1, 2023 as the start date for the hourly tipped wage to increase to $6
. This is the first increase in the schedule outlined by Initiative 82.

Recap:
There’s been a lot of confusion on this, including in local media, but the hourly tipped wage increase did not begin January 1. As we previously shared, the authors of Initiative 82 wrote the measure for the June 2022 primary, setting the increase to take effect approximately six months after that vote, which would have been January 1. But when legal challenges moved the initiative to the fall ballot, the language did not change.

Additionally
the measure needs to undergo the usual Congressional review period before being implemented. The delay in naming a speaker to the House of Representatives further added to the wait, meaning the measure would not be ready for implementation until possibly around April 20.

More About the Vote
: Councilmember Bonds introduced the proposal, with RAMW’s support, to provide everyone clarity so that businesses can plan, organizations can educate and operators can be in compliance with the rule. Thanks as always to RAMW legislative counsel Andrew Kline for his efforts. Additional efforts to help mitigate some challenges created by I-82 remain in discussion. We’ll keep you updated.
Recession fears:
Climbing interest rates may be slowing inflation but are also concerning economists that we’ll dip into recession later this year.

Those were among takeaways from an annual meeting with the DC Chief Financial Officer. RAMW, along with other business groups, joined the meeting with revenue analysts to gain insight, provide perspective, and better understand how we can support our industry in the year ahead. Staff shortages, remote workers, and a nationally slowing economy are all hindering the local economy’s growth.

Recent restaurant revenues may be close to 2019 levels, but inflation is undercutting any apparent gains. We urged officials to highlight that fact in reports – especially to lawmakers – so as to not overstate our industry’s recovery.

Despite all this, the industry, resilient as ever, presses ahead.

Many of you saw yesterday’s New York Times’ story (
How Restaurant Workers Help Pay for Lobbying to Keep Their Wages Low
) that paints a false picture of the National Restaurant Association as well as undermines food safety. (The reporters begin the story by calling food safety training annoying.)

Behind the headline:
For three months the national association answered dozens of reporters’ questions and gave them extensive data, which the Times excluded because it didn’t fit the angle they had in mind for their story.

Real story:
Revenue from training and certification products goes back into programs that support education, restaurants, and the workforce.

Bottom line:
We, the operators, know better than anyone that food safety is for the common good. We’re proud of the priority the industry places on training to keep diners, workers, and the community healthy and safe.

applications are now open for industry professionals and students. The Frans Hagen awards of up to $5,000 each go toward culinary education for individuals with an interest in a career in food service.

Building engineers, maintenance staff, groundskeepers, and contractors who are responsible for maintaining your sidewalks during and after snow events. This webinar will discuss snow removal best management practices, eco-friendly de-icing products, and the Department of Public Work's regulations on snow removal (when and how).

The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) is conducting a Positive Truck/Bus Signage Study to understand the benefits and costs of installing new signage in support of a potential mandatory truck/bus route system, and develop recommendations for next steps.
