Adams Morgan Movie Nights features Queen of the Capital on Tuesday
|
One of DC's favorite annual events is back this spring with
a
great lineup of films.
The theme of this year's series is "The Road Less Traveled," featuring characters who are on a quest or journey.
The 2022 edition of Adams Morgan Movie nights is sponsored by

who will once again be donating hundreds of cookies for each screening on a first-come, first-served basis.

page on Facebook for other announcements and promotions. Adams Morgan Movie Nights runs on Tuesday evenings through June 21 with a rain date of June 28. Movies are shown on the soccer field at Marie Reed School and start about 30 minutes after sunset. The field is located behind the tennis courts at the corner of 18th Street and California Street, NW.
Movie Nights: Brown Bag Movie Meals
It's not too late to participate in our "Brown Bag to Movie Nights" program again this year.
Participating businesses will be promoted along with our movies every week. All your business needs to do is put together a carryout meal of some sort, preferably with utensils (if needed), that will be available on our movie nights (Tuesdays through June 21) and let us know about it. Contact

Farmers Market returns Saturday!

The Adams Morgan Farmers Market opens for the season,
Saturday, June 4, from 8:30am – 1:00pm

Music at the Farmers Market
With help from a grant from the Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR), we have hired a musician, Heidi Martin, to perform at the farmers market on Saturdays. In addition to playing folk music and jazz, she will also set aside a couple sets for children's music and will have instruments with her so they can participate. Heidi began as lead 3’s teacher with a joyous circle time. “Music 2Little Ears” grew into a creative set of children’s music performances, classes and private lessons. She is also a DC Jazz Festival Education Coordinator and a professional vocalist and composer.
Remembering Roy Hill
We mourn the loss of Roy Hill, our beloved viola player, and will miss him terribly. Please hold him in your hearts and may his memory be a blessing.

SUSTAIN: A Public Art Experience at Unity Park
|

A colorful installation of 24 saris and immersive soundwalk in Washington DC marks 10 years of the collaborative climate justice project Storytelling with Saris. Led by Bangladeshi American artist and climate activist Monica Jahan Bose, SUSTAIN connects communities across the globe on issues of food insecurity, climate change and gender equality.
Monica Jahan Bose presents SUSTAIN, a public art project that brings together communities in Washington DC and her ancestral village of Katakhali in Bangladesh to create saris and a soundwalk about food insecurity and the climate crisis. Curated by Sarah Tanguy, SUSTAIN is a collective response to sustainability featuring community-sourced poetry and art on saris with a special focus on urban and rural eco-agriculture. Co-created with women farmers from Boses endangered coastal village and DC participants, the 18-foot-long fuchsia and aqua saris wrap around the six grand columns of The LINE DCs façade and form a welcoming passageway at Unity Park in the Adams Morgan neighborhood. Other highlights include a soundwalk, poetry slam, and film screenings about sustainable practices and the impacts of climate on agriculture and food security.

The Small Medium Business Growth Fund deadline extended to June 3 at 4:00 pm
|
The deadline for applications for the
Small Medium Business Growth Fund
has been extended until Friday, June 3 at 4:00 pm. Businesses that have not yet submitted their applications will have an additional week to apply.
The Small Medium Business Growth Fund is a program that offers grants aimed to retain and expand district-based small businesses by supporting large scale capital improvements, large equipment purchasing, and technological advancements within retail, professional services, industrial-based businesses and manufacturing industries.
Grants made to small businesses will support funding under four categories:

Retail Awards
up to $50,000 to support capital improvement, purchase of large equipment, and retail expansion.

Local Manufacturer Awards
up to $100,000 to support capital improvement, purchase of large equipment on commercial property with a designated industrial use.

Small Business Investment Projects Awards
up to $600,000 to support innovative projects that elevate the development of distressed and emerging neighborhoods throughout the district. Note: the project must be delivered within a 12-month timeline.

Technology Advancement Awards
up to $200,000 to support technology advancements like automation, AI, Machine Learning, VR, robotic process automations, augmented reality, systems upgrades and processes that allow businesses to scale.

Robust Retail Citywide Grant
|
The Department of Small and Local Business Development (DSLBD) is excited to announce that we will be accepting applications for the 2022 Robust Retail Citywide Grants. A robust retail sector is critical to maintaining the vibrancy of DC neighborhoods, but due to market realities of the past years, retail businesses are under threat of business decline and closure. The 2022 Robust Retail Citywide grant(s) support existing DC-based retail businesses in maintaining operations and viability during the current small business crisis.
DSLBD intends to award up to $7,500 per business
to approximately 78 businesses from the $588,000 in available funding for the Fiscal Year 2022. This grant will be operated as a reimbursement grant, awarded via lottery, to DC retail businesses that have met all eligibility requirements by the final deadline. Businesses that received a Robust Retail Citywide award in FY2021 are not eligible to apply.
Applications are open through June 8.

DC Arts Center Logo Design Contest
|

Did you know that DC Arts Center has only ever had two logos and that since 1994 our logo has remained unchanged? Our first logo featured the graphical depiction of an eye. Our current logo is a shield vibrantly displaying our trademark yellow and black behind our organization’s initials. Today, almost everyone who speaks of our organization does so in reference to those initials – DCAC.
With new and exciting things on the horizon, we’re looking for a new logo that honors our past and embraces our future.
That’s why we need you! As a community arts center dedicated to presenting first-quality art of all kinds, we want to give the fantastic talent in our community the chance to contribute to the public face of DC Arts Center. We’re seeking design submissions from local artists in the greater Washington, D.C., area to help us create a new logo and what will become the core of our future branding.
We’re a small institution, and we have limited resources. At the same time, we’re eager to work directly with our community on a meaningful project. It’s also part of our core organizational values to honor artists’ work in our community. So, if a design is selected, we’re proud to offer the artist chosen a $500 honorarium for their work and full credit for the design on our website. Our intention is to show our appreciation as best we can financially while also offering artists an opportunity to expand their portfolio and contribute to the history of a storied cultural institution.
