Bike to Work Day - Tomorrow morning!

Tomorrow morning we will welcome 400+ bike riders through Adams Morgan at our pit stop in Unity Park (triangle park at Euclid/Champlain and Columbia Road, from 7:30 to 9:30 am. Please join us! There will be FREE coffee and pastries from Tryst and water and fruit from Safeway - among others.

City Bikes will be there www.citybikes.com doing their bike repair clinic and will have at least 20 items for the FREE raffle. Just put your business card in the box. We'll draw names at the event and after so you don't have to stick around to win. Some of the items to be raffled are: Topeak Bike Cover, Planet Bike Blaze Super Flash Light Set, a Pedro's Trixie 6 gear Multi-tool and  an ABUS Booseter Extra level 6 bike lock.

We need a couple of volunteers to help distribute t-shirts and other donated goods that morning if you have a couple of hours, please let Kristen know - kbarden@adamsmorganonline.org or call 202-997-0783.

Registration for the metropolitan Washington region’s annual Bike to Work Day 2013 on Friday, May 17 is at www.biketoworkmetrodc.org .

Bike to Work Day, organized by Commuter Connections and the Washington Area Bicyclist Association (WABA), prompts thousands of area commuters to bicycle to work to highlight and promote this clean commute option.

Last year there were 12,700 registrants, and coordinators expect registration will again break records as novice and experienced cyclists join together to celebrate bicycling as a fun, healthy and wallet-friendly commute alternative. The first 12,000 registrants will receive free Bike to Work Day t-shirts at the pit stop of their choice and become eligible to win great prizes such as Jamis bicycles. Registration and event details including pit stop locations, sponsor information and how to join a convoy are at www.biketoworkmetrodc.org .

Commuter Connections and WABA encourage new and experienced bicycling commuters to be prepared and offer the following resources:

· Learn more about Bike Commuting: Learn about commuting to work by bicycle at www.commuterconnections.org – click Commuter Programs, then Bicycling.

· Ride with others in a Commuter Convoy: Commuter convoys on Bike to Work Day will be led by experienced bicycle commuters, and many routes are available. Find a convoy near you at: www.biketoworkmetrodc.org/join-a-convoy .

· Brush up on cycling skills: Gain bike-commuting confidence by participating in Confident City Cycling Classes . Learn to safely share the road with cars, other bikes, and pedestrians: http://www.waba.org/education/adult.php .

Meeting with MPD on Friday May 17th to hear about plans for Operation Adams Morgan Part 3

Captain Aubrey Mongal from the MPD Third District will brief the business community on Friday May 17th at 1pm at Grand Central Restaurant at 2447 18th Street, NW about MPD's plans for Operation Adams Morgan Part 3 which will begin on June 1, 2013.

As many of you know, in the Summer of 2011, MPD launched Operation Adams Morgan which was a multi-agency approach to send a message that Adams Morgan is a great place to eat, shop, play and live but not for criminal activity. Operation Adams Morgan Part 2 was in the Summer of 2012.

Meeting about the Marie Reed Soccer Field restoration project - May 20th

The DC Department of General Services has notified us that they have scheduled a meeting on Monday, May 20th to provide an update on the planning for the new soccer field that will be constructed at Marie Reed Elementary School this summer.

The meeting will be at 6:30 pm at Marie Reed School, 2200 Champlain Street, NW (please use the 18th Street entrance). Anyone who is interested in the project should feel welcome to attend.

Training for Adams Morgan businesses with MPD and ABRA on May 29th - best practices for nightlife establishments

Assistant Chief Patrick Burke from MPD and Fred Moosally, Director of ABRA, will be conducting a training on the newly released MPD manual "Best Practices for Nightlife Establishments" on Wednesday May 29th from 3:30 to 5 PM at the Reef at 2446 18th Street, NW. This is only for Adams Morgan businesses.

The manual is designed to help owners and managers of night-time establishments develop a safe nightlife atmosphere. All attendees will get a copy of the manual and MPD will review the contents with participants.

If your business is open in the evening, please consider sending staff to this training. Restaurant managers and security staff should absolutely attend.

Fifth Annual Adams Morgan Summer Concert Series - June 1 to July 6th - opportunities for businesses

The 5th Annual Adams Morgan Summer Concert Series begins on Saturday June 1 at 5 PM.

We will be promoting the concert series in full detail soon too. However, right NOW we want all Adams Morgan businesses to consider:

OFFERING A SINGLE-DAY DISCOUNT AND ATTRACT ALL OUR SUMMER CONCERT GOERS TO YOUR STORE OR RESTAURANT.

Would increased foot traffic and more customers on summer Saturdays be music to your ears? If so, you will be thrilled to hear about a new initiative we will be putting into place for the summer, starting with the June 1 kickoff concert by crowd favorite Kid Goat.  For the very first time, every concertgoer will be able to receive a same-day promotion in participating businesses if s/he attended our concert.  We would like you to offer a promotion so that visitors feel welcome and truly encouraged to frequent our businesses.

As you know, in each of the past 4 years, our summer concerts have drawn hundreds of people to the neighborhood each summer Saturday.  Before and after the concert, and during intermission, we always encourage concertgoers to shop and eat in Adams Morgan. Still, it was a bit of a mystery to know who did stick around, since we couldn't track them.

Finally, this year, we will prove that you can lead a horse to water AND make them drink!

We have come up with a way to not just bring visitors to our community to hear the concert, but also to encourage attendees to visit our best businesses.  All concertgoers will receive a distinctive red paper wrist band at the concert.  Upon presenting this wrist band in participating businesses, the concertgoer will be entitled to a special discount available just that day, and only to concertgoers with the wrist band.

This is where you come in.

The more discounts our businesses offer, the more attractive the wrist band, and concert attendance, will be. You shape the deal--a percentage off, a "buy X get Y" deal, perhaps a freebie for concertgoers with any purchase.  Just make it persuasive, so our concertgoers, their toes still tapping, will boogie on down to your business to spend their hard-earned dollars.

We will also hand out a complete list of all businesses offering some kind of special (along with details about the special) at the concert each week.

Marie Reed Elementary School's Spring Carnival - June 7th

Marie Reed Elementary School’s Spring Carnival is on June 7th and they are  looking for sponsors. Marie Reed is a school with rising enrollment, and they are preparing for a totally refurbished soccer field and renovated building. The money the Carnival raises is reinvested into the school to provide learning opportunities, engage families, support our athletic programs, and so much more.


With a cash, service or raffle prize donation to the Marie Reed Elementary School PTA you can become a Panther Power Sponsor (donation of $500 or more), Panther Pride Sponsor ($100 - $500), or Panther Partner (under $100 or services).
