Save the Date: Rock 'n' Roll Marathon DC
is scheduled for March 11, 2017

On Saturday, March 11, the marathon will come through Adams Morgan, traveling up Calvert Street from the Ellington Bridge and continuing on Adams Mill Rd. until it turns left onto Columbia Rd. and then onto Harvard Rd.

Those sections of road will be closed on that day from approximately 6:30 am until noon. Plan accordingly.

Caring for Street Trees

Our friends at the DowntownDC BID have put together a guide for caring for trees in DC:

Trees and flowers create healthier city streetscapes, both environmentally and aesthetically. Street trees purify the air, provide shade and reduce heat and traffic noise. They also help control stormwater runoff, increase property values and beautify the city. One mature, healthy tree can absorb carbon dioxide at a rate of roughly 48
pounds per year and can cool the air by up to 13 degrees. It can also produce as much oxygen in one season as 10 people inhale in a year. However, in order to appreciate these benefits, street trees and flowers whether in hanging flower baskets or planted in tree boxes or elsewhere, require a tremendous amount of care.

DCRA Launches Safe & Simple Initiative

Today, the Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs (DCRA) unveiled ‘ Safe & Simple ,’ a new initiative aimed at improving the way we serve District residents and businesses. As part of the initiative, DCRA announced three new services that the agency will begin offering immediately: online scheduling for appointments at the agency’s Permit and Licensing Centers, a new how-to guide for obtaining a deck permit , and online scheduling for permit-based inspections .

“DCRA does a lot of different things from licensing to permitting to inspections. But improving the way we serve the public really comes down to making processes simpler and District residents and businesses safer,” said DCRA Director Melinda Bolling. “Ultimately, to continue to be a full-service city, we must make doing business with the District safe and simple.”

The three new services announced today add to a growing list of improvements—such as the DC Business Center Portal —offered by DCRA to customers. DCRA will be releasing additional service enhancements connected to this new initiative in the coming weeks and months.

DDOT Invites Public Comment on Revised Rules for Vision Zero

The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) invites the public to comment on the revised rulemaking for Vision Zero. Public comments will be accepted through Monday, March 6, 2017.

Vision Zero is the Bowser Administration's plan to eliminate all traffic fatalities and serious injuries by the year 2024. The revised rulemaking is based on input the agency received in written comments, and hearing testimony last fall.

“The District is committed to Vision Zero and we understand that public input is essential for us to realize our goal of zero traffic fatalities and zero serious injuries,” said DDOT Director Leif Dormsjo. “We have revised the rules to reflect the input we heard from the public and look forward to enhancing our efforts to address behaviors such as excessive speeding that we know cost lives."

The revised Vision Zero proposal strikes a balance between strengthening deterrents of dangerous behavior, and establishing a new framework for penalties that are both proportional to existing fine regimes, and reflective of the fatal consequences of violations.

DDOT welcomes feedback on these newly proposed rules. Any interested person may send comments electronically to publicspace.policy@dc.gov.

Interested parties can also write Alice Kelly, Manager, Policy and Legislative Affairs Division, Office of the Director, District Department of Transportation, 55 M Street, SE, Suite 400, Washington, DC 20003.

Copies of the proposed rules are available by writing to the above address, and electronically in the DC Register ( http://dcregs.dc.gov/Gateway/NoticeHome.aspx?noticeid=6369134 ).
