18th Street Pedestrian Zone debuts Sunday!
|
The Adams Morgan Partnership Business Improvement District (AMPBID) is excited to announce that the long-awaited return of the
18th Street Pedestrian Zone
will occur on multiple Sundays throughout the remainder of the year. The pedestrian zone will be located along 18th Street NW between Kalorama and Columbia Roads NW on the following dates:

Sunday, August 21 from 12pm-10pm
-
Sunday, September 4 from 12pm-10pm
-
Sunday, October 23 from 12pm-10pm
-
We may add an early November date and we anticipate the street closures would resume in the Spring of next year.
18th Street will be closed to vehicle traffic between Columbia and Kalorama Roads, NW
The streets will be blocked off by a combination of dump trucks, MPD cruisers and orange barrels. During the AMPZ there will be no motor vehicle access to the roadway. Pedestrians, bicycles, mopeds, scooters, and stilt-walkers are welcome. :-)
What to expect:
Leading Up to Sunday’s AMPZ Closure:

“Emergency No Parking” signs will be posted throughout the closure area by Friday evening.
Morning of Sunday’s AMPZ Closure:
-
On Sunday morning, a contractor hired by AMPBID will begin placing detour signs and orange cones and barrels around the neighborhood approaches to the AMPZ alerting drivers that the street will be closed to traffic and directing them around it.

Prior to the 12 Noon closing, DPW will ticket and tow any vehicles still parked in the closure zone

At 12 Noon the road will be closed by MPD as follows:
-
Dump truck & cruiser on 18th St. at Kalorama Rd.
-
Dump truck & cruiser on 18th St. at Columbia Rd.
-
Cruiser on Belmont St. at 18th St.
-
Cruiser on Belmont St. at Columbia Rd. only allowing residents access to the road (inbound and outbound)
-
Cruisers at the alleys that intersect with the AMPZ limiting access to local traffic and not allowing access to 18th St.

Traffic Control Officers (TCOs) will be placed at the Columbia Road and Kalorama Road entrances to the long alley that parallels 18th Street (grease alley) to keep traffic moving in that alley and allow access to the rear of all properties on that side as well as the parking garage. There will be an MPD cruiser at the18th Street entrance to the alley (Hoffman Alley).
During Sunday’s AMPZ Closure:

PUDO Zones:
There will be 3 Pick-up/Drop-off (PUDO) zones to allow for both rideshare and food delivery vehicles to temporarily park/idle. These zones will be clearly marked with large sandwich board signs and will be actively monitored by TCOs to prevent vehicles from being parked for more than 10 minutes. The PUDO Zone locations are indicated on the attached map and are located at:

The east side of 18th Street at Kalorama (next to the Sorrento Building and basketball court)

The northwest corner of Columbia Rd. & 18th St in front of the Starbucks
-
The southeast corner of Columbia Rd. & 18th St in front of the McDonald’s
-
Garage access:
The Colonial garage will be accessible from the alley behind the east side of 18th Street that runs from Kalorama Rd. to Columbia Rd.

Entertainment:
We will be contracting with various entertainers to provide some programming in the roadway. Note: the roadway must be kept accessible to emergency vehicles at all times, so any entertainment in the road way will be easily dispersible and moveable (ie. jugglers, dancing, chalk art, face painting for kids, yoga and other exercise classes, no stages or structures are allowed.)

AMPBID:
We will have a tent set up in the streatery area in front of our office at 2424 18th St. (in front of the former Wawa space). We will be staffing the event for the entire duration and will have additional safety ambassadors and clean team staff on duty.

Businesses:
Businesses are encouraged to have additional staff on hand for the day and expect to be busy. Specials, sales, etc. are encouraged (if offering, please let us know so that we can promote via our various social media channels). Businesses cannot expand their service area beyond what they are currently allowed to use. You may not set up additional service in the roadway. All of the ABRA rules that currently apply will still apply on that day.

Commercial deliveries
will be difficult. You should avoid scheduling deliveries from your suppliers during the event on Sunday between 12 noon and 10 pm.

This is an “Open Streets” event, it is not Adams Morgan Day.
There will be no vendors of ANY KIND allowed in the streets. The only room that remains is the fire lane and that can not be blocked by structures for safety purposes.

Bus re-routing.
The 90 and 96 Metrobuses will be re-routed on Sunday. See the maps below for details.
At the End of Sunday’s AMPZ Closure:

At approximately 10pm the dumptrucks and MPD cruisers will vacate their positions and the road will reopen to traffic immediately.

AdMo Vibe concerts continue next week with The Perfectionists
|
AdMo Vibe is the ultimate setting for a family night out, date night, relaxing evening in the park, or solo adventure. The bands will be playing various genres of music including folk, pop, classical, rock, jazz, and more. Concert goers can picnic with takeout from a local restaurant, enjoy good vibes with neighbors and friends, and visit an array of shops and boutiques just steps away before or after the performances.

The Adams Morgan Farmers Market is open for the season on
Saturdays from 8:30am – 1:00pm
, rain or shine, at UNITY PARK, Columbia Rd and Euclid St. NW. The market will be open every Saturday through December.
Music at the Farmers Market
With help from a grant from the Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR), we have hired a musician, Heidi Martin, to perform at the farmers market on Saturdays. In addition to playing folk music and jazz, she will also set aside a couple sets for children's music and will have instruments with her so they can participate. Heidi began as lead 3’s teacher with a joyous circle time. “Music 2Little Ears” grew into a creative set of children’s music performances, classes and private lessons. She is also a DC Jazz Festival Education Coordinator and a professional vocalist and composer.
