Should 18th Street be closed to motor vehicle traffic to give pedestrians more space and to help businesses?
We need your input
.
|
There is interest from a number of businesses along 18th Street to close a portion of the street to traffic and/or expanding the sidewalk in response to the current health crisis. The idea behind the move is to give businesses the opportunity to use the sidewalks to serve customers with more social distancing while allowing pedestrians to use the roadway.
Some concerns that will need to be accommodated include deliveries to the businesses and the ability for food delivery services (and other customers) to pick up food from restaurants. In addition, three bus routes would need to be rerouted and safety and emergency access concerns would need to be addressed as well.
An ad hoc committee has been formed to work on the issue, including representatives from ANC1C, CM Brianne Nadeau's office, and neighborhood businesses and residents. Please indicate on the form if you would like to be a part of that committee (the committee has only met once so far).
It's important to be clear that this endeavor is designed to provide safety and opportunity for small businesses to resume and expand their services; not to entertain large gatherings and spirited neglect of the social distancing guidelines. It is to allow space in our small community and business corridor where inside space is too close for comfort. We are in support of our small businesses to be able to operate safely first and foremost.
We have put together a short form to collect input.

Answers to 6 thorny questions that could prevent loan forgiveness
|
The U.S. government is now almost two weeks behind schedule on answering a crucial question: How can Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loan recipients get their loans forgiven?
The program’s forgiveness rule sounds simple: Spend at least 75 percent of the funds on payroll within an 8-week period to get your loan forgiven. But it’s more complex than it appears, and despite the government saying it would issue clarifying guidance by April 26, borrowers are still waiting. So on Thursday, Inc. editor-at-large Kimberly Weisul called up a series of finance and legal experts to ask how they’d address six of the most common points of confusion.
For example:
If you got a PPP loan but you’re still closed, can you ask your employees to take all their paid vacation time now?
The answer:
You likely need to mirror what you’ve done in prior years. If you run an accounting firm, and taking vacations in May and June is pretty normal, you might be in luck. But if you ask employees to take vacations simply because you have no work for them to do, you’re unlikely to have that money forgiven.
These are crucial questions, and addressing them without help can be seriously challenging.

Prepare for hurricane season in a COVID-19 environment
|
The official start of the Atlantic hurricane season may be June 1st, but Tropical Storm Arthur has formed early and is currently off the coast of North Carolina. Additional information shared by the NBEOC about the forecasted track of Tropical Storm Arthur is attached.
While so much of our collective energy and resources are focused on responding to the immediate challenges of COVID-19, it is important to start thinking now about how to prepare your facilities and staff for hurricane season. Our FEMA Administrator recently issued a video message of how our agency is preparing for hurricane season in a COVID-19 environment (
English
,
Spanish
) and
our page has been updated
with guidance related to COVID-19.
In addition, here are our topline messages to the public about preparing for hurricane season in the current environment:
-
Do not let COVID-19 virus prevention stop you from seeking shelter during severe weather.
If sheltering in a large group, take steps to ensure you are following CDC guidelines on social distancing. Follow guidance from local authorities on evacuation and sheltering as it pertains to COVID-19 prevention guidelines.
-
Disasters won’t wait. Neither should you.
As we continue our efforts with the Whole-of-America to respond to and recover from coronavirus, we are also leaning forward and preparing for the upcoming hurricane season.
-
The start of the 2020 hurricane season is right around the corner.
FEMA urges residents in hurricane-prone areas, and far inland, to prepare now for the possibility of bad weather conditions while maintaining public health guidelines to prevent the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19).
-
Readiness
. FEMA, other federal agencies, and the American Red Cross have modified policies and planning and have taken actions to ensure the federal government can respond to any disaster during our continued coronavirus response efforts.
As you consider ways to returning to work, we encourage you to take a look at the
Exercise Starter Kit
we recently published with sample documents your organization can use to conduct your own planning workshop to navigate the complexities of returning to full operations during COVID-19.
