It may never be easier to get up close and personal with the musical talent of Washington than at the first annual Adams Morgan PorchFest when the front stoops and porches of the community will be transformed into intimate performance spaces to be enjoyed by anyone who happens to stroll by. And it’s free!

Inspired by similar Porchfest events across the country aimed at creating a family friendly, neighborhood-based alternative to the nightclub music scene, Adams Morgan’s version will span an eclectic range of styles from Brazilian, Irish and jazz, to indie rock, children’s music and even Egyptian Nubian folkloric(!) List of performers and times is available here: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Adams-Morgan-Summer-Concert-Series/108542192525536?ref=hl

“Adams Morgan has a rich musical heritage, and many of our residents are working musicians —PorchFest is a family friendly way to share their talent with the community,” said Kristen Barden of the Adams Morgan Partnership BID.

“PorchFest is exactly the kind of grassroots arts event that brings people and neighborhoods together— and the tree lined side streets and architecture of Adams Morgan will only complement the performances. We are delighted to partner with the Adams Morgan Partnership BID to bring art out and into the streets,” said Steve Shulman, executive director of Cultural Tourism DC.

“We made our porch available even though we didn’t know what kind of music would be played, or who would be playing, but because it sounded like fun.  Free music for the people – who wouldn’t support that?” said Adam Crain, owner of Adam’s Inn.

Adams Morgan’s PorchFest: Not House Music. Music at Houses.

Sponsored by the Adams Morgan Partnership Business Improvement District (AMPBID), Adams Morgan PorchFest is a joint project with Cultural Tourism DC and will bookend Art4All DC - One City, Four Quadrants, Activated with Arts: A Festival of Festivals that began September 13 and runs through October 6.

Adams Morgan business news - The Lookout (new business), Meeps for Halloween outfits and more, SolidCore free trial classes

The LookOut - new business

We met earlier this week with Ian Fay of SaintGorilla and his colleagues at The Lookout located at 2439 18th Street (second and third floors). They are building a collective of created agencies with heart.  They are not a co-working space, they are a family of filmmakers, storytellers, artists, and musicians, creating DC culture.  At thei events, they build relationships and break bread. They teach, learn, laugh and dance. A lot.

Saint Gorilla helps both individuals and organizations to pitch and launch their brand, ideas, or initiatives. Engaging the power and reach of the social web space, we produce video-infographics, mini-documentaries, entertaining viral narratives, and then plan live events to showcase it all. Our clients receive the most enjoyable projection of their brand and a measurable impact on their target market or investor. This results in significantly higher brand awareness, customer buy-in, and speed of comprehension while boosting viral traction in the social web space.

Opening at 1841 Columbia Road, NW in November 2013

We're thrilled to introduce DC to Lagree Fitness, which started in LA in 2007 and now there are over 130 studios globally.  "The Lagree Fitness Method"  is a high-energy, small group fitness class done on the patented MegaFormer, which is described as a cross between a Pilates reformer and Total Body Gym. This will be one of the most intense and effective workouts you'll ever do. there is no impact on your joints - no jumping and no heavy lifting. All classes are 50 minutes and no more than 10 people in each class. every class has loud, high-energy music to keep you motivated. this is a total-body workout and you will burn 500-700 calories each time.

Streetscape Loans - still available but not for long

There is still time to apply for a Streetscape Relief Loan.

Streetscape Loan Relief Fund

The Streetscape Loan Relief Fund is a program made available through the District's Department of Small and Local Business Development (DSLBD) designed to provide interest-free loans to any individual or entity that operates a business inside or adjoining a streetscape construction or rehabilitation project in the District.

For more information about the Streetscape Loan Relief Fund, please call Schuyler Woods at 202-529-5505 or email swoods@wacif.org

Since WACIF and DSLBD launched the program in November 2011, more than $1.8 million of 0% interest loans have helped 24 business owners keep their doors open and serving customers!

The temporary legislation that created this loan fund expires on 10/29/2013.  If there is an additional legislative meeting on 10/15/2013 (at Chairman Mendelson’s discretion), CM Jim Graham will move an emergency and temporary bill to extend the timeline (if there is still a need).

If there are businesses that still want to apply for these loans please do so ASAP and let Kristen know if you won't be able to apply until after 10/29/21013 - email kbarden@adamsmorganonline.org or call 202-997-0783.

Trash Compactor legislation is moving again...

We'd like to bring to your attention an upcoming hearing on Wednesday, October 9, 2013, on a bill that Councilmember Jim Graham co-sponsored in 2008 that would create a tax incentive for businesses to purchase trash compactors.  Trash compactors have been shown to dramatically reduce rodents and smells associated with traditional dumpsters, and the wear and tear on streets and alleys.

Compactors have already been purchased by individual and groups of businesses in Ward One.  Such cooperative purchases and collective agreements with one hauling company have also helped reduce wear and tear of large commercial trash hauling trucks on our alleys and the noise associated with the trucks.

We encourage all who care about quality of life and a sustainable approach to waste removal to make your interests heard at this important hearing.

COUNCILMEMBER JACK EVANS, CHAIR

COMMITTEE ON FINANCE AND REVENUE

Community Purchasing - Solar Power Update!

Here is the latest from our friend Joella Mosely and her group:

New Green Industries, LLC/ The Community Purchasing Group (NGI)

NGI was approached by a local solar financing company who liked the Community Purchasing groups' methods.  NGI decided to work together on offering more win-win opportunities, now for basically free solar pv and thermal (water heating) systems.

In short, they act as a rooftop utility.   A shared-benefit model, they provide all the infrastructure/ systems, maintenance, and monitor the sale of the electricity produced to Pepco, while the receiver building agrees to a fixed discount on their utility rates for the life of the agreement- about 10 years.  Their guaranteed discount averages out to about a healthy 30%.

After the agreement period, the landlord owns the installations free and clear (life span of a system is 20 or more years), paying only for the energy they don't generate. Such installations can increase the value of commercial property and can be part of the packaged value to tenants.  Added bonus, the company, Skyline Innovations started in our very own Affinity Lab back in 2009.

To get a baseline proposal, a building only needs to submit their Pepco/gas bills, along with an authorization to NGI to ask Pepco what their annual usage is.  If that part works out, then they'll visit the rooftop in question to do a detailed analysis.  Owner then says yes or no.  Pretty simple.
