Know your responsibilities when it snows

We're not expecting any snow accumulation in the immediate future, but it's important to be prepared for it and know your responsibilities. Now is the time to evaluate your snow plan and ensure you are ready for it when it happens.

DC Snow removal mandate (via DPW):

All residential and commercial property owners must remove snow/ice from the sidewalks around their property within the first eight hours of daylight after the storm ends. The Department of Public Works enforces the “Winter Sidewalk Safety Rules,” by citing residential and commercial property owners who have not cleared their sidewalks within 24 hours after the storm ends. Residential property owners may be fined $25 and commercial property owners may be fined $150.

Snow Responsibilities:

DC Government:

• Plows streets and bridges
  Note: Alleys are not cleared by the DC Government or by the BID.

Adams Morgan BID:

• Works with the DC Government to ensure that all our commercial streets stay plowed.

• Shovels crosswalks at intersections and puts down eco-friendly ice melt.

• Clears access to fire hydrants, trash cans, and bus shelters.

• May be able to lend shovels to businesses for a short period of time, but we have limited resources. Businesses should all have their own snow-clearing equipment.

Business/property owners are responsible for clearing their sidewalks. To prepare, they:

• Should identify the staff people, or contractor, responsible for shoveling snow and removing ice.

• Should make sure the right staff person has multiple ways to get to work during/after a snow event.

• Should have enough shovels, ice breakers, and eco-friendly ice melt to make the sidewalk in front of your business safe.

Be good to your customers and neighbors, shovel early and often, and stay safe!

"Eco-Trees" available at the Adams Morgan Farmers Market

From our friends at Licking Creek Bend Farm:

We've been farming sustainably on the Licking Creek Bend Farm since 1972. Although we rotate vegetable fields yearly, we have about 8 acres of marginal land Christmas trees have proven to be a viable and earth-conscious choice. Going against industry standards, we grow trees without the use of herbicides (which stop the growth of weeds, but pollute the soil and water), pesticides or artificial colors. The results have been attractive, natural-looking, fresh- cut trees free of pesticides, sprays or colors. Although more intensive manual labor is used to grow them, we keep them affordable at $20 - 125 a tree. (Customers are encouraged to come in the spring and help plant new trees).

HERE’S WHAT WE HAVE AVAILABLE THIS YEAR:

• CHARLIE BROWN TREES - These trees are all imperfect and have their own character. $20 – 40 range.
• COLORADO BLUE SPRUCE ** (The tallest of our trees – 6 ½ up to 12 ft). Takes 22- 25 years to grow. Natural shape. Great for candles or heavy ornaments. Citrus- like aroma (sharpish needles). $55 – 125.
• DOUGLAS FIRS - A popular tree. Soft needles, nice aroma. 6 – 10 ft. $50 – 100.
• CON-COLOR FIRS - Soft needles, 6 – 9 ft. $50 – 85. Nice citrusy aroma! Very few.
• WHITE PINE - These are the heirloom trees. Soft needles, looks pretty. Cannot support heavy ornaments though. 6 – 10 ft. $45 – 95. Not too many.
• DIG UP YOUR OWN TREE - If you want to dig and burlap a tree, you have to be able to transport it yourself. Cost is $45.
• TABLE TOP TREES - We will have some “table top” trees (3 – 4 ft) and even a few I can try to cut in such a way that the tree can grow back and be re-shaped. These will sell for $30 – 35.
• WREATHS/ROPING - Plain wreaths are $12.00 with tree order; $14 without. Ditto with ordering roping. Both limited. So order soon!

If you are planning to give a tree as a gift to a teacher, a limited-income family, or community worker, you can have them contact us to come and pick one out in your price-range. We discount gift trees. If you know of a family who can’t afford a tree, we’ll have a limited number of trees we can donate anonymously.

HOW TO ORDER:
Please email esiegel2@igc.org and place your order WHICH MUST INCLUDE: 1. your name, 2. email, 3. phone, 4. type of tree, 5. height, and 6. pick up location, 7. when you want to pick up, 8. wreath order, 9. Rope (#ft) order, ASAP. We'll bring trees down to the Adams Morgan Farm Market (8:00am – 1:00pm) until December 19th. Please pay by check. Please mark your pick up date on your calendar. Bring bungee cord and rope. If you’d like to ride up to the farm and pick a tree, I like the company.

The trees are fresh cut for you, so if you don’t pick it up, it will have been cut for naught. There’s nothing sadder this time of year then seeing a lone tree abandoned. We feel their pain!
