Adams Morgan Puts a New Spin on Record Store Day: Convenience

Hundreds of record stores across the country and their patrons will celebrate indie music culture on Record Store Day this Saturday, April 19th -- and there is no better place to experience it in DC than Adams Morgan.  “If you're standing at the corner of 18th and Florida in Adams Morgan, there are four great independent record stores within a few blocks -- we're the only neighborhood in they city that offers that" says Adams Morgan Partnership BID Executive Director, Kristen Barden.

Since not every record store gets the same limited-run releases on Record Store Day, that can be a big advantage for music junkies, who can dash from shop to shop pick up a title that may have sold out, or never arrived at another.  That’s good news for Adams Morgan shops like Crooked Beat and Smash! -- every record sold helps keep local, independent record shops like theirs in business.  "Record Store Day helps keep independent stores like ours alive -- people who value unique shops over national chains come out big on Record Store Day because they know it's about more than the just the music" says Daisy Lacy at Smash!

Even with Record Store Day having gone global –- it’s now on every continent except Antarctica -- Crooked Beat’s Bill Daly sees the local connection.  “Lots of musicians have called Adams Morgan home over the years.  There is a tradition of live music here. And the independent record stores are part of that musical culture. Record Store Day helps keep that alive."

Both Smash! (smashrecords.com) and Crooked Beat (crookedbeat.com) will open early on Record Store Day. Rare and unusual releases to keep an ear out for include previously unavailable b-sides from Thievery Corporation’s Saudade Sessions, an REM box set (Unplugged),  a re-mastered Sun Ra record, Wanda Jackson’s Windy City Redux (Live at Chicago’s Lincoln Hall,  four new Bruce Springsteen songs (American Beauty) and an Otis Redding reissue.

Reminder about Colonial Parking daytime validation program

As we mentioned in February, on March 1, 2014 day time parking at the garage with validation from any Adams Morgan business changed to:

Up to 2 hours $4.00

2 hrs-4 hours $8.00

Please make a note that these rates are good 7 days a week from 7:00AM-5:00PM only. Vehicles must be out of the garage by 5 pm to use the validation program. While it is the same price as parking at a meter, it is a lot easier to park in the garage versus driving around looking for a parking space.

Nightlife Association meeting on April 24

MPD Chief Cathy Lanier will present a special briefing at the next meeting of THE DC NIGHTLIFE ASSOCATION on Thursday, April 24th at 2 p.m. at Ziegfelds at 1824 Half Street, SW.

This IMPORTANT presentation on the terrorist threat to assembly venues in Washington DC has been made necessary by new threat assessment information from The Department of Homeland Security, FBI, MPD, and other agencies.

Every business should send a representative.  All businesses are invited.  Everyone is welcome.

ABRA will be also be covering Legislative Updates, Upcoming Compliance Training and Fake ID Class, Noise Regulations and Enforcement, Extended Hours for Holiday Weekends and Soft Closing, ABC License Moratoriums, ABRA’s Website and List Serve, and Promoters.  They will also be distributing the new Fake ID Guides for 2014 (one per establishment).

The Department of FIRE and EMS (FEMS) will be providing information regarding the requirement to obtain a permit for Heat Lamps on Patios and Sidewalk Cafes, and the new Fire Department Self-Inspection Checklist.

Pike Barber from the Hospitality Insurance Agency will be providing attendees with information covering The rising cost of Liability Insurance, Ways to reduce the cost of Liability Insurance, How to reduce the cost of Liability Insurance as a result of Security Training from Nightclub Security Consultants, Advantages of joining together as a group in a DC Insurance Program, and How to work together to change DC’s Liquor Liability Laws.

The Office of Tax and Revenue (OTR) will be clarifying the different Sales Tax Rates for a Cover Charge, an Admission Fee, and an Entry Fee.

The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) will be providing information on the requirements for Public Space Permits and Certificate of Use for Sidewalk Cafes and for Valet Parking Permits.

Movie Nights at Marie Reed Field with PTA - May 20, June 10 and June 24th

Community film series have been enthusiastically supported across the city, and the Adams Morgan Partnership BID is excited about presenting one here with the Marie Reed PTA.

Adams Morgan Movie Nights will be held at the new soccer field next to the Marie Reed Elementary School at 2201 18th Street, NW, corner of 18th and California Streets, NW and will be a family friendly way to bring the community together, broaden the perception of what Adams Morgan has to offer and will benefit residents and businesses alike.

The recent upgrades to the site, including hillside seating, make this one of the best neighborhood screening locations in the city. This season’s series will include a range of award winning films with an emphasis on classic and/or animated features.

The movies will be:

Tuesday May 20th at dusk : (as choosen by the Prince of Petworth poll)

Up - “By tying thousands of balloons to his home, 78-year-old Carl sets out to fulfill his lifelong dream to see the wilds of South America. Russell, a wilderness explorer 70 years younger, inadvertently becomes a stowaway.”

Tuesday, June 10th at dusk : All the President’s Men - “Reporters Woodward and Bernstein uncover the details of the Watergate scandal that leads to President Nixon’s resignation.”

Tuesday, June 24th at dusk : Rushmore - “The king of Rushmore prep school is put on academic probation.”

The Adams Morgan Partnership BID is organizing this series along with the Marie Reed Elementary School Parent Teacher Association, which will be selling refreshments at the event to raise funds for the school.

The Adams Morgan Movie Series is a great chance for you to promote your business leading up to the summer months. We'll be offering Adams Morgan swag bags at each showing (depending on availability) with promo items (coupons/flyers/freebies).

Mary’s Center and the Adams Morgan Partnership Business Improvement District (AMPBID) would like to invite the community to participate in the Second Annual Taste of Adams Morgan on Tuesday, April 29th, from 5:30-9pm.

Last year’s event raised over $3,500 and we need YOU to make this year’s event an even greater success!

Similar to last year, Taste of Adams Morgan will provide city-goers with a chance to sample from Adams Morgan’s best restaurants while supporting their neighborhood and Mary’s Center, in the process.

Sixth Annual Summer Concert series - begins May 3

The 6th Annual Adams Morgan Summer Concert Series begins on Saturday May 3rd at 5 pm!

There will be another fantastic line up of bands playing in the BB&T Plaza at Columbia Road and Adams Mill Road for six Saturdays in May and June from 5 to 7 pm (May 3, May 17th, May 31, June 7, June 21 and June 28).

Registration is now open for BTWD - May 16th, 2014/Adams Morgan pit stop

Bike to Work Day 2014 - May 16th

On Friday May 16, 2014 Commuter Connections and, Adams Morgan non-profit, the Washington Area Bicyclist Association (WABA) invites you to join over 10,000 area commuters for a celebration of bicycling as a clean, fun, and healthy way to get to work. Attend one of 79 pit stops throughout D.C., Maryland, and Virginia to receive refreshments, and be entered into a raffle for bicycles being given away. Free T-shirts available at pit stops to the first 14,000 who register and attend.

We have partnered with City Bikes for our Adams Morgan pit stop again. They will be donating a bike for the raffle and will have their very popular bike clinic too. Lunar Massage will be on hand passing out power bars for cyclists.
