The Cherry Blossom Festival may be over but Adams Morgan still has our Blossom Sculpture!
|
The Adams Morgan Partnership BID is excited to partner with the
National Cherry Blossom Festival
and host a one-of-a-kind, giant cherry blossom sculpture in Adams Morgan! The five foot tall, 1,200 pound sculpture is called “Community Grid” is now located in BB&T Plaza at 1801 Adams Mill Rd NW. The sculpture was designed by local artists My Ly (
@mylydesign
) and Jaclyn Stallard (
@jstallard
). It's one of 26 sculptures that are installed throughout DC, Virginia, and Maryland as part of
Art in Bloom
, a public art exhibition in celebration of the National Cherry Blossom Festival.
We encourage you to go on a “Blossom Hunt” - starting in Adams Morgan and making your way around DC to find each sculpture. In addition to the life-size cherry blossom sculpture, our neighborhood is fully decked out with cherry blossom decals to help celebrate the season and the joy that this beloved tradition brings to our city each year.

Registration is Open for Bike To Work Day 2021
|
The Washington, DC region’s 20th Anniversary Bike to Work Day is returning this year on
Friday, May 21, 2021
.
Due to COVID, things will be a bit different this year. Registrants will have to register for a specific 30 minute time slot and only 30 riders will be allowed to register for each slot, so total registration will be strictly limited. To help accommodate this, we're extending our pit stop hours -- the
Adams Morgan Pit Stop
will be open from 7:30am to 11:00am at Unity Park (in front of The LINE Hotel DC, corner of Columbia Rd. and Champlain St., NW).
Due to the COVID restrictions this year we won't be able to host any on-site activities, but we're planning on having some good giveaways, so stay tuned for more details.

On the SBA rollout of the Restaurant Revitalization Fund
, we have some updates and new resources. You may be seeing that the SBA is doing some information sessions with various organizations around the country. There will be one specific to foodservice in the DC/VA/MD region soon and we’ll have registration details on that coming to you in the next 24-48 hours. In the meantime, we anticipate the release of an official RRF Grant application, an informational SBA website, and a program guide as soon as this week or next week. Once the application is released, restaurants will have time to receive and understand the form before the application process begins.

that has not been publicly released by the SBA

. This information helped inform the National Restaurant Association’s
FAQ sheet
but it is still under review by the SBA. We share this to provide context for restaurant operators, but this is not the final version so stay tuned for updates from us. We understand that there are some consultants and grant writers out there marketing their services to restaurants to help you with this process. While you have to choose your own approach, our understanding is that this application process is intended to be completely navigable by a small business and does not require the assistance of a third party or a bank.
The RRF Grant program is expected to run on a government platform that processes grant applications similar to the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP). While RRF is a grant program, not a loan program, the PPP platform provides assurance that the system will be conditioned to meet the tremendous demand of restaurants.
This is a separate platform from the SBA’s Shuttered Venues Operator Grant (SVOG) program, which had to temporarily shut down last week due to technical problems.
That separate portal is not yet up and running again, but SBA is giving timely updates on Twitter (@SBAgov) if you are awaiting applying for the SVOG program.
Onto other Federal legislative updates
from the National Restaurant Association. First, the House of Representatives will consider the “Paycheck Fairness Act” (H.R.7) later this week, which is likely to pass the House. The National Restaurant Association and several business coalitions have expressed concern with this legislation and they continue to push back. Specifically, the legislation would prohibit many legitimate, non-discriminatory practices that employers use to attract and retain the best qualified employees, and a court could find pay discrimination when the differences in pay are based on professional experience, education, shift differentials or hazardous work as well as pay differentials based on local labor market rates or an organization’s profitability. We’ll keep you posted on this bill’s trajectory.
Additionally, our national partners are advocating to maintain the current rulemaking put in place last March around the Joint Employer Status under the Fair Labor Standards Act. The DOL under the new administration is aiming to rescind them, but the National Restaurant Association enthusiastically supported the final regulation, which they say provides a much-needed update and balanced approach to the rules, and reflects the realities of the modern workplace. In an effort to keep this message shorter versus longer, please email us for more information on either of these legislative items.
Finally, in DC, a reminder as we have received some questions on the timeline for outdoor dining allowances. Streateries, parklets, and the expanded outdoor dining allowances currently in place are permitted through the end of 2021. Mayor Bowser has introduced legislation - the
ReOpen Washington, DC Alcohol Act
- we have mentioned before, which would extend the program through 2023. That bill is now with Council but a hearing has not been set yet. More to come.

From commercial property owner Lynn Skynear who says she has been defrauded by a company calling themselves US Funding.
This is what happened to us:

We applied for a DC Government Grant
-
We later received a phone call from
US Funding
strongly implying they are part of the Government and are calling about the grant applied for directly with the DC Government.
-
US Funding asked how much we required for project and asked for details of the plan.
-
We questioned them after spending a half hour on the phone trying to understand what part of DC Government they were. As soon as we understood their goal was to sell a service that we did not need we said "No thank you" and hung up.
US Funding claims it sent an email congratulating us on joining.
We never agreed to join this predator operation
. There were Zero (0) Agreements signed with this company.
We found our American Express card was being charged $29.95 monthly by US Funding and notified Amex requesting a refund. Instead Amex sided with US Funding and used only one piece of our conversation for “evidence.”
Please be aware of this scam and be careful with your information.

Mayor Muriel Bowser launched a new program to provide financial assistance to DC residents struggling to make rent and utility payments due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Through the
Stronger Together by Assisting You (STAY DC)
program, renters and housing providers can apply for grant funding to cover past and future rental payments in addition to utilities like water, gas, and electricity.

NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING AND PRELIMINARY FINDING
ON THE RECERTIFICATION OF THE ADAMS MORGAN PARTNERSHIP BUSINESS IMPROVEMENT DISTRICT
Notice is hereby given that, pursuant to section 19 of the Business Improvement Districts Act of 1996, effective May 29, 1996 (D.C. Law 11-134; D.C. Official Code § 2-1215.18) (“Act”), the Department of Small and Local Business Development (DSLBD) will hold a public hearing on the recertification of the Adams Morgan Partnership Business Improvement District.
The public hearing will be held at 2:00 pm on Monday, June 21, 2021 in Suite 850N, 441 4th Street NW, Washington, D.C.
DSLBD Director Kristi Whitfield has informed the Adams Morgan Partnership Business Improvement District that the filing criteria set forth in D.C. Official Code § 2-1215.18 have been met and their application is otherwise in conformity with the Act.
The BID application is available for review by the public during normal business hours on weekdays at 1640 Columbia Road, N.W., in the offices of the Adams Morgan Partnership Business Improvement District; and by the public online
