REMINDER: DDOT hosts a 18th Street Streetscape Meeting - November 1

A public meeting will be held to provide updates on the Adams Morgan Streetscape Project as activity moves north into the area between Kalorama Rd. NW and Columbia Rd.

This meeting has been specifically developed to provide updates to business owners, building owners, and managers who may be impacted by work as it moves into the area between Kalorama Rd. and Columbia Rd. on 18th Street.
Agenda items will include:
  • Progress to date
  • Upcoming activities and timelines
  • Washington Gas update
  • Review of policy on existing sidewalk structures in public space
  • General questions
Another meeting will be held in the near future after this one that is for the general public.  Although anyone is welcome to attend this meeting, the focus will be on businesses in the impact zone.

Morton Fine Art (MFA) located at 1781 Florida Avenue, NW is pleased to present (Re)calling & (Re)telling , a solo exhibition of photographs by artist Kesha Bruce in conjunction with Fotoweek DC 2011. The exhibition will be on display from November 5 through November 12, with an opening reception and artist talk with Kesha Bruce on Saturday, November 5th at 2pm .

About (Re)calling & (Re)telling:

History and Meaning: When is a Story More Than Just a Story?

A good story allows us to make sense of the world by helping us to define who we are and understand our place in it. In her Fotoweek DC exhibition, titled (Re)calling and (Re)telling , artist Kesha Bruce offers viewers a contemporary entryway to the rich tradition of storytelling in art through the use of both photography and collage.

For the past several years, Kesha Bruce has created work using an old collection of photographs taken by her grandfather during his years as a soldier during the Korean War. In addition to the many photographs of young African American soldiers going about their daily routines, the collection also included snapshots and informal family portraits taken upon his return home to Des Moines, Iowa. Fascinated by the people and places in each photograph, these images soon became the basis for two complete bodies of work.

The narratives Bruce recreates in (Re)calling and (Re)telling , are composed of a mysterious mix of elements culled from the intimate terrain of memory, nostalgia, and the mundane remnants of daily life.

Also featured at Morton Fine Art is her latest series The Story , comprised of small, intimate mixed media works on paper which render character and place through the use of minimalist texts, each work relating to the next like non-linear chapters of a novel that refuse to settle into a comfortable beginning, middle, and end.

About KESHA BRUCE (France, b. USA):

Born and raised in Iowa, Bruce studied painting at the University of Iowa before going on to earn her MFA in Painting from Hunter College in New York City. She has received awards from the New York Foundation for the Arts, The Vermont Studio Center, and The Puffin Foundation. Her photographic work from (Re)calling & (Re)telling was awarded the EnFoco New Works Photography prize and was included in the traveling exhibition Double Exposure: African Americans Before and Behind the Camera.

A Taste of New Orleans - Hosting Tribute to Bob Marley weekend of October 28-30

Please join Arthur and his staff at A Taste of New Orleans at 2424 18th Street, NW for a Tribute to Bob Marley featuring JR Marvin and some of the the original Wailers each night throughout the weekend of October 28-30, 2011.

This is a benefit weekend for breast cancer research and homeless veterans. On October 28 the show starts at 9 pm and Friday and Saturday at 7 pm. A $50 donation is requested at the door.

Like to help at Thanksgiving but are too busy?

ANC1C Commissioner Marty Davis, a long time Adams Morgan resident, is again coordinating the "Order of the Drumstick" this Thanksgiving. The program enlists people to roast a turkey on behalf of an organization that feeds the needy.

This year's recipient is the Gospel Rescue Ministries (GRM) located at 810 5th Street, NW, in the heart of Chinatown- www.grm.org . GRM is the contractor the AMPBID uses for our Clean Team members. All of our Clean Team members are part of GRM's programs.

Volunteers are asked to roast, but not stuff a turkey that can be warmed and served on Thanksgiving Day. Cooked turkeys can be frozen until picked up making it more convenient for volunteers to participate.

If you are interested in roasting a turkey to donate to GRM for their Thanksgiving Day meal, please contact Marty at 202-328-3817. Thanks.
