Cleaning program changes /expansion to begin on January 1, 2012

Adams Morgan Partnership BID is reducing litter on area residential streets with a new service provider – Ready, Willing and Working

The Adams Morgan Partnership Business Improvement District (AMPBID) announced yesterday that they will reduce the impact of commercial patron’s activities on adjacent residential streets by ramping up cleaning operations and expanding the area in which the AMPBID will provide cleaning services.

Beginning on January 1, 2012, the AMPBID’s Clean Team will expand cleaning services to include one block off the commercial streets in Adams Morgan into residential streets on Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays each week.

From 7 am to 3 pm each of those days, the Clean Team will pick up trash from weekend activities on residential streets and make sure the sidewalks are free of obstacles for pedestrians. Previously, the AMPBID Clean Team focused exclusively on Adams Morgan’s commercial routes.

The decision is to address residents’ concerns about trash generated by some patrons of Adams Morgan’s thriving commercial corridor. This has been discussed with Councilmember Jim Graham and at December 5th ANC1C PZT Committee meeting as well as the December 7th full ANC1C meeting. The AMPBID board of directors voted to approve this expansion at their November 10th meeting.

To keep the community updated, the AMPBID mailed postcards earlier this week to residential addresses announcing this new program. Postcards will be distributed to our businesses tomorrow and Friday to distribute to customers.

“We have heard from residents that see pizza boxes and other trash on their front steps on weekend mornings and we are responding by getting it cleaned up as soon as possible,” said Kristen Barden, Executive Director of the AMPBID, “This community is ours together and together we can make it even better.”

The AMPBID has recently selected Ready, Willing and Working (RWW), a non-profit affiliated with the Capitol Hill BID, to be the service provider for all our cleaning activities beginning on January 1, 2012.  RWW has a successful record with the Capitol Hill BID, North Capitol Main Street, Barracks Row Main Street and a reputation for high-quality work by their team members (mostly formerly homeless and incarcerated men). “We are excited about our upcoming relationship with RWW and look forward to cleaner streets, improved tree box maintenance and working with a program that provides supportive services to empower people to become all that they can be,” said Kristen Barden.

Each month, the DC Office of Motion Picture and Television Development (DC Film Office) www.film.dc.gov features a different DC neighborhood to draw attention to their unique personality with the hopes of attracting film, television, video, photography and other multimedia projects to the area. Our PR consultants with the Washington Media Group, put in a good word for us with the D.C. Film Office and they have chosen to feature Adams Morgan as their January 2012 Location of the Month.

A Citizen Transportation Forum will be hosted by National Capital Region Transportation Planning Board at the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (www.mwcog.org) in Washington, DC on Saturday, January 21st. This is the fifth and final forum in a series that the National Capital Region Transportation Planning Board has been hosting in various jurisdictions around the region.

Should we use congestion pricing to help solve our traffic woes?

Are you concerned about traffic congestion in the Washington DC area?

What do you think of charging new tolls on our region’s roads?

Would you like to be paid $100 for taking the time to share your opinions with us?

The forums will each focus on some possible solutions to traffic congestion in our region, including putting tolls on existing roads. The purpose of the forums is to bring together a representative sample of residents in order to get their views on a variety of different ideas. In particular,they will be discussing congestion pricing, a form of road tolling in which congestion would be reduced by charging higher tolls on roads with more traffic.

Each meeting will last approximately four hours. They will offer a free lunch and a stipend of $100 in an American Express gift card to each person who attends and participates throughout the meeting.
