Fashion's Night Out - September 6 - Not just for retailers!

In 2009, Vogue magazine's Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour wanted to stimulate the country's slow economy with a night that would specifically focus on getting consumers back into stores.

As a result, Fashion’s Night Out is now an unprecedented global initiative to celebrate fashion, restore consumer confidence, boost the industry’s economy during the recession, and put the fun back in shopping! The
Annual Fashion's Night Out (FNO) will take place on Thursday, September 6, 2012 from 6 pm to 11 pm.
Earlier this month, DC Deputy Mayor Victor Hoskins sent an official letter of support to Vogue magazine stating that the DC Fashion Foundation and Destination DC will work together to create a citywide FNO plan for the District.
There is a FNO-DC Task Force that is working together to help retailers plan and market FNO events in an effort to stimulate the retail economy throughout the city and celebrate this amazing event in every quadrant in the District so that the entire city will be represented during FNO.
SOOOOO all of this is to say that we have a great group of Adams Morgan Retailers participating in official FNO events:
Violet Boutique
Toro Mata: The Art of Peru
Skynear Designs
Malik Tienda
Meeps
Commonwealth/Stussy
SMASH!

...and NOW we we want all of the rest of Adams Morgan businesses to take advantage of the people coming to Adams Morgan for FNO by turning this into an Adams Morgan-wide event.

So we will give all the retailers participating in FNO wrist bands that they will give their customers. These wrist bands will enable customers to get discounts in other Adams Morgan businesses.....SOOOOO even if you aren't a retailer you can participate by offering 10% off all purchases or more, or a free drink or appetizer, or whatever incentive you would like to offer. Please let Kristen at kbarden@adamsmorganonline.org or Julie at Violet at julie@violetdc.com know what you will be offering ASAP. We need to compile this list no later than August 28th.

As we did for Crafty Bastards last year, we'll publish this complete list and have it available at all participating businesses. Hope many Adams Morgan businesses can participate in Fashion's Night Out this year!

Note from Amy Austin at the Washington City Paper: Crafty Bastards

"Washington City Paper is entering its ninth year of producing the Crafty Bastards Arts and Crafts Festival. For the last seven years, we’ve had the pleasure of holding the fair in Adams Morgan at the Marie Reed Learning Center, where the grounds were transformed into a DIY shopping experience that drew tens of thousands of people. We immensely enjoyed the strong partnerships we had with the Marie Reed school, the Adams Morgan business community, and the Adams Morgan BID.
So it is with great disappointment that we are announcing that City Paper will not be able to host Crafty Bastards at Marie Reed this October. The challenges of producing an outdoor festival on school property have gotten progressively steeper, which led us to a decision to look for an indoor venue. Unfortunately, we couldn’t find an indoor space in Adams Morgan that has the capacity the festival needs.

It has been a terrific seven years, for which we are very thankful.

We hope to have news about the next Crafty Bastards Festival date and location soon."

SmarTrip Card Improvements Begin September 1

Metro continues to encourage transit users to steer away from costly paper fare cards and plans to implement a few more dynamic measures to ensure more users make the switch to the electronic SmarTrip® card. Each of the changes below make purchasing and using a SmarTrip® card easier than ever. All items listed go into effect on September 1.

*    Purchasing a SmarTrip® card is now more affordable! All purchasers buying cards after September 1 will receive a $3 rebate after registering the card online, effectively lowering the cost of the card from $5 to $2. Registering protects your card’s balance in case it gets lost, allows you to see usage history and allows you to add value and view remaining balances.

*    Never be low on funds again! Auto-reload is a new option that will automatically load value onto your card whenever the balance drops below a rider’s designated amount. Riders will be able to link their cards to a credit or debit card and the value will be automatically pulled from that account.

*    Purchase cards at any station! Metro plans to have SmarTrip® card dispenser machines in every Metrorail station. They began installing the vending machines in July, starting with the top 10 stations where paper fare cards were sold. All machines will be in place in every rail station by September.

Please note that also beginning Sept. 1, riders will need a minimum of $1.20 on a SmarTrip® card to enter the Metrorail system. For riders using a senior/disabled SmarTrip® card, the minimum will be 35 cents.

Along with the fare increases that began on July 1, Metro also implemented a $1 surcharge for all trips paid for with paper fare cards. In addition, Metro now allows transfers of up to $20 from paper fare cards to SmarTrip® cards and customers can also load one-day rail passes and the new 28-day rail pass onto SmarTrip® cards for added convenience. All of these changes will help encourage greater use of SmarTrip® cards.
