Receiving Applications Starting August 11th

The Greater Washington Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (GWHCC) and the Mayor's Office on Latino Affairs (OLA) are announcing a partnership to launch their new mentorship program "DC SmallBiz Mentorship Program (DCSMP)" for the District of Columbia's Latino businesses.

“The Chamber is committed to the economic growth of Latino an

d other minority-owned businesses in the Washington metropolitan area and we are truly honored that OLA will be partnering with us on DCSMP,” said Angela Franco, GWHCC President and CEO. “We are excited that this program will benefit the economic growth of the District through the expertise of successful business owners. We will be selecting the best candidates to serve as mentors of businesses and entrepreneurs in need of guidance.”

The mentorship program will allow experienced business owners to impart their knowledge and help small businesses improve processes, customer experience, and strategy. The pilot program, scheduled to start on September 1st, will consist of five mentors and five mentees who will be meeting on a monthly basis for two hours for six months. There will be an opportunity each meeting to discuss the current state of the business, strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats including strategies to leverage expertise.

“OLA is aligned with Mayor Bowser's commitment to create path to the middle class,” said Jackie Reyes, Director of OLA.  “I'm excited for this partnership with the GWHCC because it gives the opportunity to small disadvantage businesses on best practices for creating long term goals on how to become sustainable.”

The mentorship program is part of the GWHCC's larger initiative to promote economic growth in the Washington, DC region. Other programs included under this initiative are the technical assistance programs in partnership with the Prince George's County Economic Development Corporation and Arlington Economic Development.

Entree DC: Food and Drink Forum - September 21st

We would like to invite you to the 3rd Annual Entrée DC: Food & Drink Forum.

The overall goal of the event is to disseminate information, inspire entrepreneurship, and create an atmosphere to foster positive action and to receive feedback.

The target audience includes current business owners who want to grow their business and get ideas. It is also intended for any individual who may be interested in opening a catering service, restaurant, delicatessen, and or vending business. During the symposium, individuals will have an opportunity to attend breakout sessions, with topics to include but not limited to leasing agreements, regulatory processes, financing, grant opportunities etc.

The Job and Opportunity Fair will take place Friday August 21, 2015 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center from 10:00am-4:00 pm .

Vision Zero - Safe Streets for Washington, DC - need your input

The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) has released 30 custom Vision Zero Capital Bikeshare bicycles into circulation as part of a promotion Mayor Muriel Bowser’s Vision Zero initiative, which aims at eliminating all fatalities and serious injuries to users of the District’s transportation system by 2024. Vision Zero is an all-hands-on-deck approach to transportation safety. By the year 2024, Washington, DC will eliminate fatalities and serious injuries to travelers of our transportation system, through more effective use of data, education, enforcement and engineering.

DDOT is seeking further input describing the experience of bicycling in the District. People on bikes are a particularly vulnerable population of travelers, and the Vision Zero team wants to ensure that this perspective is reflected in our safety strategies.

DDOT is asking Capital Bikeshare riders to Bikeshare their safety stories. Through this visual storytelling exercise, people on Capital Bikeshare bicycles – including the new Vision Zero bike – to their favorite bicycle-friendly street or trail, and tweet a photo to @DCVisionZero to explain how it keeps them safe.

Likewise, Bikeshare riders and ALL DC RESIDENTS are asked to go to DDOT’s Vision Zero Safety Map at http://visionzero.ddot.dc.gov/VisionZero/ and report locations where they believe protected bicycle facilities and infrastructure are lacking or where there is any hazardous issue.

All 30 Vision Zero bikes initially will be placed at the Dupont Circle Station located at Massachusetts Avenue and Dupont Circle NW. DDOT will track the journeys of each bicycle and the safety stories riders share for approximately three weeks.

Vision Zero is a part of Mayor Bowser’s response to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Mayor’s Challenge for Safer Streets, which aims to improve pedestrian and bicycle transportation safety by showcasing effective local actions, empowering local leaders to take actions, and promoting partnerships to advance pedestrian and bicycle safety.
