1) SAVE THE DATES: September 8th Monthly AMPBID Board meeting and October 13th Annual Meeting and board elections

The next Adams Morgan Partnership BID (AMPBID) Board of Directors' meeting will be Tuesday, September 8th, 2015 at 5 PM at the Festival Center at 1640 Columbia Road, NW.  Hope you can join us! An agenda will be sent out before the meeting.

Board members: Please call or email Kristen at 202-997-0783 or kbarden@adamsmorganonline.org if you are unable to attend otherwise we will assume you are attending. Thanks.

Annual Meeting - October 13

The Annual Meeting of the AMPBID will be Tuesday, October 13, 2015 at 5pm, at the Festival Center at 1640 Columbia Road, NW. Postcards were mailed to all property owners and business owners last week.

AMPBID Annual Meeting Election Process

At the October 13th Annual Meeting, BID members will have the opportunity to vote for candidates for 5 board slots: three property owners and two business owners. Four board members currently holding those positions have been renominated for another term and have agreed to serve if elected.

Those are:

* Jessica White, property owner

* Matt Wexler, property owner

* Louis Courembis, property owner

* Constantine Stavropoulos, business owner

One business owner, Joanna Robinson, is leaving the board at the end of the term and Justin Abad, from Cashion's and Pop's Sea Bar, has expressed interest in running for her seat.

AMPBID Annual Meeting Election Process

Each person eligible for election as a member of the Board may be nominated by: 1) the nominating committee, or 2) by a member petition submitted to the Chair of the Nominating Committee (Steve Greenleigh) at least 30 days prior to the date of the meeting (so additional nominations must be received by September 13th); provided that only business owners can nominate business owners and property owners can only nominate property owners and a petition shall require the signature of no less than ten (10) members to nominate a member of the Board. Each nominee either shall be present at the annual meeting or shall consent to such nomination by a written document.

Voting

Per the by-laws, any properties for which BID taxes are over 60 days delinquent, may not vote nor may they nominate members to the board.

For each class of member, the ballot will list all the candidate names, and members will vote for the number of open slots in that category. For example, there are two business owner slots. All members will have the opportunity to vote for two candidates from the list of all business owner candidates.

Proxies

Proxy votes are allowed.

Pursuant to the BID bylaws, those interested in voting in the board elections by proxy can either contact the BID to request a proxy form, or can develop their own form, as long as it includes: the date of the meeting at which it is applicable (October 13) full names, addresses and the dated signatures of both the individual issuing the proxy and the witness(es) to the signature. The proxy voter can be anyone to whom the property or business owner designates to vote for them and DOES NOT have to be a member of the Adams Morgan Partnership BID. All proxy forms must meet all these criteria to be accepted.

The BID will have a proxy form available by fax, mail and by email.

Any questions on this process, please call Kristen at the BID office 202-997-0783 or email her at: Kbarden@adamsmorganonline.org .

2) Reminder: Please post events on the BID website

As you know we launched a new website a few months ago. It is really important that all Adams Morgan businesses post their events and sales or other special things happening on the website. The form is short and should take a couple of minutes to complete! The website will only be as useful as the information you post on there! THIS IS ONLY FOR ADAMS MORGAN EVENTS!

Thanks!

4) Adams Morgan business news!

Gary Taylor Art and Framing has moved out of 1843 Columbia Road,

NW (we heard he will likely move into another Columbia Road location

very close by) and in his place there will be a new veterinary office.

Stay tuned for more details about that.

Lunar Massage i s closing at 1768 Columbia Road, NW at the end of

September. From Joanna Robinson:

Our lease in Adams Morgan is up in September and I have decided not to

renew it. We'll be consolidating down to the Mt Vernon, Dupont, and

Union Station studios by September 21.

Finding great therapists who can do the type of bodywork Lunar is

known for has always been a big challenge, and in the last year it

has gotten even harder because the main school for massage for

the area closed in Virginia. We are perpetually struggling to have

enough excellent therapists to fill the schedules at the four

studios, so it will be easier to serve more people at three for a while.

I'd love to keep expanding but I can't do it without top talent and I'm not

willing to sacrifice that just for more locations.

But it's been a great five years in Adams Morgan!

We love the neighborhood and hope to return someday.

You have one more month to see us there - our last appointment day is

Sunday September 20 . http://www.lunarmassagedc.com/

From [solidcore]:

We are thrilled to announce the opening of our new and improved Adams

Morgan studio on Saturday, September 12th!  Adams Morgan is our first

home and we appreciate your patience as we found a new spot in our

favorite neighborhood.  Our new address is 1706 Columbia Road NW in the

new Ontario 17 building.

We are hosting our first ever charity-fueled opening weekend and we can't

wait for you to be a part of it.  We will be offering $22 classes all weekend

long to benefit The Phelan-McDermid Syndrome Foundation.  This is a

foundation dedicated to researching a genetic form of autism that affects

the 22nd chromosome.  Dr. Agnes Chang and her husband Tim Chang have a

child affected with this syndrome and we can't wait to rally around them

and show our support.

We have a VERY special opening deal for use at our new Adams Morgan

location only -- 10 classes for only $250.  This package must be purchased

in the month of August and again, it's for use in Adams Morgan only.  This is

for first time clients, so spread the word!

Visit the [solidcore] website for more details.

6) Adams Morgan Porch Fest is October 3, 2015

Calling All Musicians!

We’re on our third year of Adams Morgan PorchFest — a celebration of the deep musical talent that exists in the DC metro area. Last year 40+ musicians/bands participated including members of the National Symphony Orchestra. We transformed the front porches, patios and stoops of our homes and businesses into “stages for a day” where local talent could be heard by all for free. It was a ton of fun, thanks to many of you, with dozens of local music acts playing about at a dozen locations in Adams Morgan. Neighbors gathered, kids danced, and the streets came alive thanks to the generosity of musicians sharing their art.

We’re doing it again Saturday October 3rd from 3pm-7pm. But we can’t do it without the singers, stand up bass players, horn blowers, guitar heroes, indie rockers, violin virtuosos, and all the other talented folks who believe in bringing music out of clubs and into the light of day.  From famous jazz legends like Charlie Byrd and Keter Betts to homegrown soul acts like Father’s Children, Adams Morgan has a rich music tradition that PorchFest hopes to continue with your help.

Here’s how it works:

We ask each participating group or individual to play a set or two on Saturday, October 3rd between 3-7 pm. We’ll match you with a host and a time slot, put your name and a brief description of your music (that you provide) on maps we’ll hand out that day and feed you pizza at the after party that night.  We’ll work with local media to get coverage — in the past one of the local television affiliates broadcast one of our bands live — so while it’s not a paid gig at this point, it can be great exposure. Acts are encouraged to sell their music, t-shirts etc. if they’d like, but the best way to think of this is as a community service/volunteer type of activity aimed at music appreciation.

If you or musicians you know are interested in participating, please use the contact information below. Even if you can’t play, please spread the word about Adams Morgan PorchFest.  We’d like to grow this bigger and better each year.

We have enough porches but we really need musicians at this point.

Thanks!

Adams Morgan Farmers' Market for August 29th

ADAMS MORGAN FARMERS MARKET

SATURDAY, AUGUST 29

8:00AM - 1:00PM, RAIN OR SHINE

Although we're at the end of the PEACH and NECTARINE season, we'll have a limited amount of the PESTICIDE FREE varieties for tomorrow.  They may look imperfect, but the ripe ones are delicious.  Some were picked before they were ripe because the racoons know when they are ready and head for the tree buffet before we can get to them.  So check them out!

If you'd like  a quantity of TOMATOES for sauce, canning, salsa, etc., now's the time to order them.  The HEIRLOOM varieties we grow make the best sauce!

Although they're unusually shaped with pretty colors, our HEIRLOOM CHERRY TOMATOES have gotten rave reviews.  Try them.

Also, if you want some of the PESTICIDE-FREE RASPBERRIES, get to the market early!  ($3.85/box)

We will have GALA APPLES that are crisp and sweet.

And we're excited that our HONEY is back!

ALSO, BE FOREWARNED, THIS MIGHT REALLY REALLY BE THE LAST WEEK FOR PEACHES!

This week we'll also have:

No pesticide PEACHES - a limited amount. (we try to pick them before the racoons get to them.  They know exactly when our peaches ripen and are right there for the buffet!!)
LORING PEACHES - large freestone.  Flesh is sweet, juicy and firm.  One of the best for canning and freezing.
HARMONY PEACHES - very red flesh is firm with good flavor.
SWEET DREAMS PEACHES - a large and very sweet peach.
NECTARINES - great flavor and luscious.
Local CANARY (or CASAVA) MELONS - the sweetest melon ever!
PLU0TS - The strangely named "pluot®" is a hybrid plant grown from a plum and an apricot. Pluots® are extremely sweet, due to very high sugar levels.  They are also called DINOSAUR EGGS!

APPLES - we will still have early pesticide-free MCINTOSH and PRISCILLA APPLES - good for sauce or eating.
GINGER GOLD APPLES - an early fall apple.  Good hand fruit.
Early HONEY CRISP APPLES - $1.49/lb.
GALA APPLES
BLACKBERRIES - our own!- with no chemical pesticides
First of our RED RASPBERRIES - pesticide-free, $3.85/box!  Come early.
SUMMER SQUASH - 6 varieties available.  But these are winding down!
TOMATOES - many varieties of pesticide free HEIRLOOM and BEEFSTEAK
TOMATILLOS
CORN
BASIL - purple, green and Thai varieties
SORREL
HERBS - note that DILL and CILANTRO are back!
MINT
COLLARDS
CUCUMBERS -  slicing and pickling
ITALIAN EGGPLANT and those cute FAIRY TALE EGGPLANTS and maybe a few ASIAN EGGPLANTS left.
RHUBARB
BITTER MELON** (see below for description) - bitter, used in Asian cooking and high in nutrients, see below
GARLIC
KALE
PERPETUAL SPINACH (which is a kind of chard)
GREEN and RED OKRA
POBLANO PEPPERS
HOT PEPPERS (they're starting to come in)
HUSK CHERRIES
...plus other seasonal goodies.

**BITTER MELONS are known for its dietary fiber, minerals, vitamins and anti-oxidants. Bitter melon notably contains phyto-nutrient, polypeptide-P, a plant insulin known to lower blood sugar levels. In addition, it composes hypoglycemic agent called charantin. Charantin increases glucose uptake and glycogen synthesis inside the cells of liver, muscle and adipose tissue. Together, these compounds may have been thought to be responsible for blood sugar levels reduction in the treatment of type-2 diabetes.

DON'T FORGET TO BRING YOUR BAGS and extras for the market if you have.  It pains us to give out or sell plastic bags!!

See you at the market tomorrow,

Michael, Esther, Charmaine, Kyla, Julia, Luisa, and our new staff, Katya, and we think Lindsay is back from her adventure this summer at an "Urban Kibbutz" in California

Extended comment period on DC Government ban on food service products made of expanded polystyrene

Today in the DC Register , the Department of Energy & Environment (DOEE) announced a formal comment period on the proposed regulations for the District’s disposable food service ware requirements, which prohibit the use of food service products made of expanded polystyrene, commonly referred to as Styrofoam TM.

The proposed regulations establish guidelines for DOEE’s enforcement of the requirements and outline the course of appeal for entities that have been issued enforcement actions.

The comment period will last 30 days, ending at midnight on Monday, September 28, 2015. Today’s DC Register is available here . Comments may be (1) mailed or hand-delivered to DOEE, 1200 First Street NE, 5th Floor, Washington, D.C. 20001, Attention: DOEE Foam Regulations, or (2) sent by e-mail to DOEE.FoamRegulations@dc.gov , with the subject indicated as “DOEE Foam Proposed Rule Comments.”

Also, I wanted to make you aware that several sections of the DC Code pertaining to the District’s disposable food service ware requirements were recently amended by the Budget Support Act of 2015 . The amendments expand the applicability of the requirements to all entities serving food in the District, eliminate affordability exemptions and waivers, and establish entry authority for DOEE. The Budget Support Emergency Act of 2015 is currently in effect. However, while the permanent legislation has been signed by the Mayor, it will not be effective until after a Congressional review period has been completed.  Following the congressional review period, DOEE is planning to publish a second round of proposed rulemaking that incorporates the BSA amendments and will create definitions that clarify the recyclable and compostable food service ware requirements that take effect on January 1, 2017.

Thank you for your interest and participation in this process.
