Background
The Sustainable Solid Waste Management Amendment Act of 2014 (the Act) requires the District of Columbia Government to issue a list of materials that are required to be recycled. The law also requires that recyclables be source separated at the point of discard. Together, these new requirements will make it easier for District residents, visitors, and businesses to successfully participate in recycling. The list of recyclables was published in December 2016 and will be effective January 1, 2018.
The District will be disseminating education and outreach tools to assist residents and businesses with the implementation of this new list and associated source separation and recycling requirements. We would like your feedback about recycling guidance and what would be most helpful for you.

Commercial Waste Compactor Pilot Program
DSLBD is soliciting applications from eligible DC business owners for the Commercial Waste Compactor Pilot Program grants, which is funded by the
Department of Public Works
(DPW).
Eligible DC business owners may use this grant to purchase or lease compactors to collect and compact bulk trash and other waste including recyclables. Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis begining June 30, 2017. The submission deadline is Friday, September 8, 2017 at 2:00 p.m.

The Commercial Waste Compactor Pilot Program comprises of:
-
grants to offset compactor costs, which is funded by the Department of Public Works (DPW), administered by DSLBD and managed by a grants manager; and
-
business owner education and impact metrics measurement of rodent activity and sanitation violations through a partnership with Department of Health (DOH)’s Rat Riddance Initiative.
Through the installation of commercial waste compactors and the education of business and property owners, DPW, DSLBD, and DOH seek to reduce:
-
the likelihood of accidental pollution through spills or wind-blown debris
-
rodent activity near businesses and
-
the number of trips to haul waste.
In doing so, the Program will support the Sustainable DC goals to minimize the generation of greenhouse gas emissions and reduce the volume of waste disposed.

16th Street Bus Lanes Project - Design Phase
In April 2016, DDOT released the 16th Street NW Transit Priority Planning Study, which resulted in a set of recommendations to be advanced to the design phase. The recommendations included peak-hour, peak direction bus lanes, bus service changes, bus stop improvements, and transit priority infrastructure. The design phase of the 16th Street NW Bus Lanes Project will use this set of recommendations to begin environmental documentation and develop preliminary engineering designs.
The public has three opportunities to give input on this phase of the project: a public meeting, an on-site engagement event at two locations, and an online open house. All events will cover the same material and provide an opportunity for public feedback. The public meeting will be open-house style with an opportunity for participants to listen to a presentation, review the roadway layouts, and provide feedback. The engagement events will be held at two high ridership bus stops: 16th and Irving Street NW and 16th and U Street NW. The online open house will include a narrated presentation. The comment period for this phase will end on September 1, 2017 at 5:00 pm. All comments can be submitted on the website, by mail, or email.
Upcoming Events
The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) will kick-off a series of public events for the Design Phase of the 16th Street NW Bus Lanes Project. The purpose of the project is to improve bus service and reliability on the 16th Street NW corridor. At the events, DDOT will provide an overview of the project, present roadway layouts, and gather public feedback.
