ity leaders. The UAE Embassy and City Soccer in the Community Foundation have teamed up to provide quality soccer fields and youth coaching programs in communities across the United States. Washington, DC will be the fifth city the program has reached. The new field in the heart of Adams Morgan is a gift to the community from the UAE Embassy and City Soccer in the Community Foundation.

Orange, Sr. and Councilmember Jack Evans announce the scheduling of a joint hearing by the Committee on Business, Consumer, and Regulatory Affairs and Committee on Finance and Revenue on Bill 20-438, the “Minimum Wage and Accrued Sick and Safe Leave Amendment Act of 2013”, Bill 20-459, the “Minimum Wage Amendment Act of 2013”, B20-460, the “Living Wage for All Act of 2013”, B20, 463, the Minimum Wage Revision Commission Establishment Amendment Act of 2013”, and B20-480, the “Earned Sick and Safe Leave Act of 2013” for

B20-438, the “Minimum Wage and Accrued Sick and Safe Leave Amendment Act of 2013”
proposes to amend the Minimum Wage Act Revision Act of 1992 to increase the minimum wage in the District of Columbia in three increments to $10.50 an hour or $1 higher than the federal minimum wage, whichever is greater, by June 2016. The bill also proposes amending the Accrued Sick and Safe Leave Act of 2008 to include restaurant wait staff and bartenders who work for a combination of wages and tips.
B20-459, “Minimum Wage Amendment Act of 2013
” seeks to amend the Minimum Wage Act Revision Act of 1992 to increase the minimum wage in the District to $12.50 an hour in four increments and to require an increase in the minimum wage in proportion to increases in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) in each successive year thereafter. The bill also proposes to increase the tip wages for workers to 70 percent of the District’s minimum wage.
B20-460, the “Living Wage for All Act of 2013”
would amend the Minimum Wage Act Revision Act of 1992 to increase the minimum wage in the District to $10.25 an hour or $1 higher than the federal minimum wage, whichever is greater; to increase the standard deduction for District taxpayers; and to establish a small business property tax credit to reduce costs to employers.
B20-463, the “Minimum Wage Revision Commission Establishment Amendment Act of 2013”
would amend the Minimum Wage Amendment Act of 2004 to establish the Minimum Wage Revision Commission with a purpose of reporting to the Council of the District of Columbia and the mayor recommendations for revising the minimum wage, establish specific functions of the Commission, and to provide for the composition and authority of the Commission.
B20-480, the “Sick and Safe Leave Act of 2013”
proposes to amend the Accrued Sick and Safe Act of 2008 to expand the coverage of the act to certain classes of employees currently not covered under the act, including tipped employees. It would allow for the accrual of paid leave at the beginning of an individual’s employment and provide for access to paid leave after 90 days of service with an employer. The bill would also strengthen remedies and procedures available to employees under the act and provide for an outreach program to inform the public about the act.

If you are unable to testify at the public oversight roundtable, written statements are encouraged and will be made a part of the official record. The official record will remain open until close of business November 11, 2013.

To create her newest body of work, Laurel Hausler worked with oil, wax, spray paint, fiber, resin, rust, bleached velvet and other unusual material. The result of her mixing unconventional mediums is a rich and highly textured artwork surface.
In her solo exhibition, Ghost Stories, her imagery is inspired by unsolved mysteries of Old Hollywood, 19th century spirit photography, and ghost stories in literature and film.
Belying the dark beauty of the paintings is a sense of optimism for the perseverance of spirit and remembrance of characters otherwise fading into obscurity.
Hausler
portrays these "ghosts" in her paintings as they come to life through repeated addition and removal of material and pigment. The result leaves them enshrouded in many layers; relics, like
mosquitoes
encased in amber.
About LAUREL HAUSLER:
A Washington, DC native, Laurel Hausler's love of literature, antiquity and the obscure inspire the stories behind her work. Working in a subtractive and additive process, she first covers the surface of her paper or canvas with multiple layers of paint, and then removes the layers to reveal the subject, only to then veil it with resin or wax. Admired for resisting a self-conscious approach to process, Hausler reveals lines, scratches, rips and gestures on her surfaces that demonstrate her decision-making process through the work's evolution to its finished state.

Ward 1 Rat Summit - November 9th
The D.C. Department of Health (DOH) is sponsoring a one day Rat Summit in each of the city’s eight (8) wards.
The
first
of these Rat Summits will be held
Saturday, November 9, 2013
at
10:00 A.M.
at the
Columbia Heights Community Center, 1480 Girard Street, N.W.
The summits are an attempt to abate the rat population and for DOH to provide information and education to community groups, residents, and business owners on topics such as proper waste storage, rodent proofing, and their ability to assist with rodent abatement.
