1) DC Water Shut off - RESCHEDULED overnight Monday May 2 into Tuesday May 3
DC Water was not able to complete the scheduled work on April 25/26 so they are notifying all affected businesses about a new date for a scheduled water shut off - Monday night May 2 at 1:30 am into Tuesday morning May 3 at 6:30 am.
DC Water would like to
perform a test shut on Monday night May 2 in support of the ongoing 18th Street
Streetscape project.
The blocks that will be
affected will be:
1) the east side of the 2400 and 2300 blocks of 18th
Street also 2233 18th Street, NW.
2) Columbia Road between 18th Street
& Ontario Rd. NW from 1742 Columbia Road to 1796 Columbia Road, NW.
They anticipate the test shut
to last for approximately 2 to 4 hours. All affected will receive notification
of the exact amount of time prior to the test shut being performed.
Once the test shut has been
deemed successful the water main will be recharged immediately after. The outage will
cover both sides of Columbia between 18th and Ontario.

2) Update on 18th Street Streetscape construction - Saturday work this weekend
We have been notified that Civil Construction will be working within the project limits this Saturday,
4/30, between 7:00 am and 3:30pm. The majority of this work will occur behind
existing barriers and should NOT impact parking space availability, beyond what is
already behind barriers.
The scope of the work is as follows:
·
perform pressure
test of 12" water line which from California Street to intersection of Kalorama Road and 18th St.
·
continue
installation of electrical conduits/manhole within closed jersey barriers.
According to contractors, tree removal on the east side of 18th Street between California and Wyoming will occur in the next few days,
weather permitting. A total of 9 trees are scheduled for removal.
This work should take a day to a day and a half, per the contractor.

Update on PEPCO work in conjunction with the 18th Street Streetscape construction
Pepco’s work on 18th Street is almost complete.
For the weeks of May 2, 2011 through May 14, 2011, Pepco crews will be working from
7:30 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. At 4:00 p.m.
Pepco will have covered all work and removed all construction equipment from
the street.
This utility work will take place in the following areas:
West side of 2300 Block of 18th Street, NW, between Wyoming Avenue and Kalorama Road, NW
West side of 2400 Block of 18th Street, NW, between Belmont Street
and Columbia Road, NW (Conduit & Cable Dept.)

4) Interns ROCK! intern appreciation week - June 10-19, 2011
In 2010, The Washington Center for Internships and Academic
Seminars (TWC) in conjunction with MTV-U and Destination DC, launched the first
InternsROCK! a city-wide intern appreciation week.
The initiative honors
approximately 20,000 interns who flock to the nation’s capital each year to
test-drive their careers at local businesses, nonprofits and government
agencies. Last year, 60 restaurants, museums, sporting venues, concert halls
and boutique retails outlets came together and offered a variety of discounts
to all interns in Washington,
DC.
In its second year, InternsROCK! will be held June 10-19,
2011 and the program has been expanded to include a kick-off event, new student
workshops and even more partnerships with community businesses.
Proven Success
The first ever InternsROCK! was an overwhelming success with
1,500 student participants from more than 1,000 internship sites and we expect
that number to double. Of the interns that took part in the program last year,
67% visited 1–3 participating business and 25% visited 3–5 businesses.
As a result of the program’s popularity, InternsROCK!
received national media attention and was mentioned in 200 news outlets locally
and nationally.
How does it work?
Interns who are in DC for the summer can pick up free
bracelets at The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars to
receive discounts from area restaurants, retailers and music venues. Interns
will also be invited to exclusive InternsROCK! events.
Does the intern need to be affiliated with The Washington
Center to participate?
No. Interns throughout the Washington, DC
area are encouraged to participate. To be included, interns must show proof of
internship with a letter from their internship host when they pick up their
InternsRock! bracelets.
What types of discounts are available to students?
Generally, interns will receive 20% off, 30% off or buy-one,
get-one free discounts at participating businesses. In addition, businesses are
also encouraged to provide free services or products.
How does a local business participate?
Area businesses can participate by offering eligible
discounts. For information about becoming a participating business please

Cost to participate as an intern?
It is FREE. All interns need to do is to show proof of
internship with a letter from their host organization to pick up bracelets.
Who should I contact to request a bracelet for an intern

Interns are eligible for discounts at participating
businesses only when wearing an InternsROCK! wristband.
