A l Volo Osteria set to open on August 12
Adams Morgan's newest Italian restaurant will soon be open in the spot occupied by Pasta Mia at 1790 Columbia Rd., NW. Al Volo Osteria is scheduled to open on Friday, August 12.
Osteria Al Volo from D.C. pasta maker Cucina Al Volo is slated to open at 1790 Columbia Road NW in early August, said Tuscan native Daniele Catalani, who owns the business with his nephew, Matteo.
“It’s high quality fresh pasta of course and Italian cooking classes,” Daniele said in an email to Borderstan.
Cucina Al Volo, which Daniele and Matteo founded last year, makes pasta using ingredients from local farmers and sells it at Union Market and at farmers markets at 14th and U streets NW and in Bloomingdale, according to its Facebook page.
“There’s a lot of demand for good food, but there’s not a lot of people providing it,” Matteo told The Washington Post earlier this year. “We have a purpose here.”

April 11, 2016
NOTICE TO MERCHANTS AND RETAILERS REGARDING PLACEMENT OF A-FRAME AND OTHER PORTABLE SIGNS IN PUBLIC SPACE
The purpose of this memo is to advise retailers and others regarding the placement of A-Frame and other portable signs in public space. When placed appropriately they are an important element of a business's exposure to clients and potential customers. When placed improperly they create a hazard for pedestrians and the traveling public and can damage or impede access to elements in the public space. Below are guidelines based on District of Columbia Municipal Regulations that, when followed, will balance public safety and access with the promotion of commercial activity in the District.
  • Placement of A-frame and other portable signs must be consistent with the display of merchandise in public space governed by District of Columbia Municipal Regulation (DCMR) 524-112.
  • This regulation authorizes the display of merchandise within three feet (3') of the face of a building.
  • The sign should not have a footprint more than three feet by three feet (3 ft. x 3 ft.).
  • The allowance of three feet (3') from the face of the building notwithstanding, the sign should not at any time reduce the pedestrian walkway to a clear unobstructed width of less than eight feet (8 ft.) in the Central Business District and six feet (6 ft.) in all other areas of the District.
  • Failure to follow these guidelines is considered a public space violation. A Notice of Violation will be issued, with associated fines for this violation of public space.

Proposed Pepco Commercial Rate Increase
Pending approval by Public Service Commission, the new rates would go into effect in July of next year.
Below is a list of rate classes for commercial customers and the potential impact they could see based on an average monthly usage. This information was provided to the Public Service Commission in Pepco's filing June 30th.
Commercial customers could potentially see an increase ranging from 1.3-9.5 percent depending on the rate class and energy usage. Businesses should be able to identify their rate class from this information, but the increase would vary depending on the type of business, rate class and energy usage.
