Bike to Work Day: The Best Thing on Two Wheels

One of nation’s largest Bike to Work Day celebrations is on Friday, May 20th

brought to you by Commuter Connections and the Washington Area Bicyclist Association (WABA) . Ride with thousands of cyclists, new and experienced,

and enjoy a healthy commute that helps improve traffic congestion and air

quality in the metropolitan Washington region. There will be free T-shirts, food, beverages and prizes for registrants who attend.

A record-breaking number of cyclists are expected to participate again this

year so register soon here: www.biketoworkmetrodc.org . The first 15,000
commuters who register receive free T-shirts (cut off date= May 12th) and are automatically entered into a chance to win one of many bikes donated by REI and BicycleSPACE.

The Adams Morgan Partnership BID is pleased to partner with CityBikes ,

BicycleSPACE and Tryst to host a pit stop in Unity Park at Columbia/Champlain and Euclid Streets from 7:30 to 9:30 am.

Say hello to our staff and volunteers who will be greeting commuters. Cyclists must register for one pit stop but are welcome to visit any of the 82 pit stops in the DC Metro region along their way to work.

All Adams Morgan businesses are welcome to offer free food and give-away items. Please contact Kristen at kbarden@adamsmorganonline.org if you would like to participate.

As part of a regional Employer Challenge, the top five companies with the

most employees registered for Bike to Work Day will be placed into a raffle

for a free catered lunch! The luncheon is exclusive to employees who

participate in this event. When registering, your employees are also invited to enter for a chance to win a free installed bike rack for your office.

Mary's Center and the Adams Morgan Partnership BID would like to invite you, friends, and family to the 4th Annual Taste of Adams Morgan .

Stroll, sip, and sample your way through DC’s most vibrant neighborhood on Tuesday, May 3, 2016 , from 5-9pm at the 4th Annual Taste of Adams Morgan event in benefit of Mary’s Center.

Taste of Adams Morgan is an annual culinary stroll where over 15 local restaurants open their doors to provide tastings to 500+ attendees. All proceeds benefit Mary’s Center.

How the DC Commuter Benefits Law Affects You

All District organizations with 20 or more employees are required to offer a pre-tax or subsidized commuter benefits program as of January 1, 2016. This measure, included in the Sustainable DC Act of 2014, will help reduce traffic and pollution while allowing DC commuters to save money when commuting by transit, vanpool and bicycling.

Commuter benefits are a win-win for individuals and businesses alike. Commuters may save over $1,000 per year by setting aside pre-tax funds for use on Metro, buses, commuter rail and vanpools, while employer payroll taxes decrease by as much as 9% for each participating employee.

Employers are encouraged to download goDCgo’s Commuter Benefits Toolkit , a step-by-step guide to setting up a commuter benefits program and complying with the law. GoDCGo is an initiative of the DC Department of Transportation (DDOT). The Employer Services team provides complimentary support to employers starting or enhancing a sustainable transportation program.

Best Practices in Employment Law for Small Businesses - Begins April 12th

The D.C. Bar Pro Bono Center, in partnership with the D.C. Department of Small & Local Business Development, the Washington Area Community Investment Fund (WACIF) and the law firm of Crowell & Moring, is sponsoring a four-part employment law course for small business owners.

Best Practices in Employment Law: A Four Part Training Series

The four sessions will be held on Tuesday evenings from 5pm to 7pm. beginning April 12, 2016.

As part of the course, you will receive an overview of DC's employment laws as they apply to small businesses, including:

Hiring, Firing, and Performance Management; Employee Compensation and Classification; Wage and Hour laws; Distinction between Employees and Independent Contractors; and Employment Discrimination

The course will be taught by employment law experts from Crowell & Moring with experience dealing with small businesses. It is designed for sole proprietors, members of business partnerships, general managers and owners of LLCs.

The sessions will take place at the offices of Crowell & Moring, 1001 Pennsylvania Avenue NW. (One block from Metro Center on the Red, Blue and Orange lines.) There is a $35 charge for the series to cover the cost of materials.

Participants will receive a certificate of completion for from the D.C. Bar Pro Bono Program, WACIF and the DC Department of Small & Local Business Development.
