On-the-Job training can save businesses money while training new employees
On-the-Job (OJT) training is a workforce development strategy where employers of all sizes have an opportunity to train, mentor and hire candidates as they become fully proficient in a particular skillset or job function. Through the OJT model, candidates receive the hands-on training necessary to increase their skills, knowledge and capacity to perform the designated job functions. The OJT strategy ensures unemployed and underemployed jobseekers have a chance to enter and reenter the workforce through an “earn and learn” model. This streamlined approach developed between select employers and the Department of Employment Services (DOES) allows employers to be reimbursed at an established wage rate in exchange for the training provided to participating OJT candidates.

Open House on the DC Cultural Plan
Please join the DC Office of Planning; Office of Cable Television, Film, Music and Entertainment; and Commission on the Arts and Humanities on Tuesday February 20th, from 5:30 to 7:30pm at the Old Council Chambers, located at 441 4th Street NW, to learn about the Draft DC Cultural Plan and provide feedback on its recommendations.
With this inaugural Cultural Plan the District is joining national cultural leaders in establishing comprehensive and forward-looking cultural policy. The Plan introduces an approach for the District to align programs, build new partnerships and make strategic investments that will make culture more inclusive and accessible in our growing city. It increases opportunities in the District’s cultural economy, which currently employs more than 150,000 people. The Plan also helps lower barriers and increase opportunities for all residents to create and consume culture. This Plan is an approach to strengthen DC culture by celebrating our history, traditions, institutions and communities. To review a copy of the Plan visit

Help plan CNHED's DC Small Biz Week
From the Coalition For NonProfit Housing and Economic Development (CNHED):
DC Small Biz Week, held this year from April 29th to May 5th, as part of the annual national commemorative week created by the Small Business Administration, celebrates small, local businesses in the District and promotes resources available to help them grow. For the past two years, CNHED has partnered with our members and District agencies in coordinating efforts during the week to organize and promote events and activities in celebration of small businesses and those that serve them. Past highlights have included celebratory kick-off events, mayoral proclamations, resource-sharing, canvassing, and pop-up business trainings.
We want to make this year's DC Small Biz Week better than it has ever been before -- AND we need your help to make it happen! This year CNHED is forming a planning committee and we're seeking the input and support of the small business community to be a part of what we think is an excellent opportunity to celebrate local small businesses, and the network of organizations committed to serving this dynamic community.

This meeting will be exclusively for commerical property owners and businesses on the east side of 18th Street between Columbia Road and Kalorama Road to discuss rodent control in the alley between 18th Street and Champlain Street. Gerard Brown, Program Manager for the Rodent and Vector Control Division of the Department of Health (DOH) will be joining us to discuss best practices for businesses and new methods that DOH is using to control rodent populations.
