AMPBID Annual Meeting and board elections - October 13
Should the Adams Morgan Partnership Business Improvement District's reauthorization be successful for another 5 Year Term, we will hold the Annual Meeting on Thursday, October 13th, 2010 at 5pm, at the Third District Police Headquarters, 1620 V Street, NW. Postcards were mailed to all property owners and business owners in early September.
AMPBID Annual Meeting Election Process
At the October 13th Annual Meeting, BID members will have the opportunity to vote for candidates for 5 board slots: three property owners and two business owners. The board members currently holding those positions have all indicated they will will be running for another term. Those are:
Property Owners:
Stephen Greenleigh
Pat Patrick
Jeffrey Schonberger
Business Owners:
Al Jirikowic
Justin Abad
Additional nominations are now closed.
Voting
Per the by-laws, any properties for which BID taxes are over 60 days delinquent, may not vote nor may they nominate members to the board.
For each class of member, the ballot will list all the candidate names, and members will vote for the number of open slots in that category. For example, there are two business owner slots. All members will have the opportunity to vote for two candidates from the list of all business owner candidates.
Proxies
Proxy votes are allowed.
Pursuant to the BID bylaws, those interested in voting in the board elections by proxy can either contact the BID to request a proxy form, or can develop their own form, as long as it includes: the date of the meeting at which it is applicable (October 13) full names, addresses and the dated signatures of both the individual issuing the proxy and the witness(es) to the signature. The proxy voter can be anyone to whom the property or business owner designates to vote for them and DOES NOT have to be a member of the Adams Morgan Partnership BID. All proxy forms must meet all these criteria to be accepted. The BID will have a proxy form available by fax, mail and by email.
Any questions on this process, please call Kristen at the BID office 202-997-0783 or email her at:

New businesses opening in Adams Morgan!
There are two new businesses in Adams Morgan!
Joint Custody
-
www.jointcustodydc.com
opened at 2337 18th Street, NW, (below Pharmacy Bar) on September 11.
Because you can never have too many vintage stores in DC, especially ones that specialize in hard-to-find rock T-shirts, we are excited that Joint Custody opened its doors on Adams Morgan Day.
Aside from the rock, however, Joint Custody has a pretty good selection of clothes from the 1930s through the 1980s, including jewelry, footwear and other accessories. And while like in any vintage store, the clothes are unique, what sets Joint Custody apart is the shop's other tangibles, a great deal of which relate to music, including both records and instruments.
Since the place is brand new, the hours are rather malleable. Officially, the store is closed Monday and Tuesday, but according to the website, "most likely we will be there working and be open, so stop by if you see the sign out." The rest of the days go as follows, with any exceptions leaning toward, "if you see the sign out, come in":
Wednesday, noon to 11 p.m.
Thursday, 4 p.m. to 11 p.m.
Friday, 4 p.m. to 11 p.m.
Saturday-Sunday, noon to 11 p.m.
And of course, since it's 2011, follow the store on Twitter where they've been announcing new items, and like 'em on Facebook. Or do the vintage thing and just stop by at 2337 18th Street, NW.
The long awaited arrival of
Turquoise Jewelry Boutique
-
www.myturquoise.net
- is opening this week at 2118 18th Street, NW, lower level. They will have a grand opening celebration in October but they can be reached at 202-285-3296. They are planning on being open 7 days a week from 12 noon to 7 pm. You have probably seen Chedeem Ertekin and their marvelous, inexpensive fashion jewelry at Adams Morgan Day or Eastern Market or one of the other area's many festivals throughout the years. We are so pleased they are opening their first brick and mortar store in Adams Morgan! Congratulations!

Special Forum on Emergency Preparedness for the Business Community - September 29th
The recent earthquake and hurricane reminded us again that we always have to be prepared for a possible disaster. In the event of an emergency, do you have an adequate plan for how to keep your business going and help others around you?
As you know, there are many kinds of natural and man made disasters that can disrupt community life and make it difficult for the economy to function. For that reason, the DC Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency has organized a new program to help make sure that your emergency preparedness efforts are adequate to the needs of your business.
Join us for the One City...One Plan: Our Preparedness community forum, entitled “The Business Community and Emergency Preparedness” on Thursday, September 29,, 2011 from 1:00 to 4:00 PM at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) 1900 Pennsylvania Ave, Conference Hall 1. Refreshments and snacks will be available free to all participants.
Thursday, September 29, 2011
1:00 to 4:00 PM
International Monetary Fund, 1900 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW
To learn more and register,
Due to the security needs of this location, all participants must be registered prior to September 29th.
This community meeting will be educational and highly interactive. Everyone who attends will have an opportunity to express their views and learn how to be more prepared in an emergency. Facilitated table discussions will be the major feature of the forums and provide an opportunity to share insights about emergency preparedness requirements and learn from others. Throughout the meeting, we will gather questions and comments from participants via computers and also use hand held electronic keypads to poll participants on a range of important issues.
Our goal is to provide attendees with a deeper understanding of how to maintain business continuity during major disasters and, at the same time, get input from you that will help us improve our efforts to create a safe and secure environment for everyone who lives in the District of Columbia.
Please plan now to pre-register and join us for the “The Business Community and Emergency Preparedness.”
If you are not personally able to attend, I strongly encourage you to identify other staff from your business or organization to attend on your behalf. It is important to have representatives from businesses in as many different parts of the city as possible.
It's easy to register online at
. If you need more information, call Theo Brown at (301) 589-1006.
