We recently met Mike Rauta who along with a stellar group of folks at Pivvit are developing a new online tool to help nonprofits fundraise and local businesses keep local customers. www.pivvit.com

Christopher Lynch at L’Enfant Café introduced me to Mike. Christopher and Jim partnered with Sitar Center to be their community partner for Bastille Day. They are committed to giving back into the community and are so excited to have them on board.

Pivvit is launching the tool in July and would love to show it to some favorite Adams Morgan non-profits and businesses.

When Margarita Dilone looked at her Adams Morgan neighborhood in 1984, one thing she couldn’t see was a professional insurance agent who could speak her own language. There wasn’t a single Spanish-speaking agent or broker in the city.

The opportunity Dilone saw in 1984 led her to create Crystal Insurance Agency, the first business of its kind in Washington.  Crystal Insurance has grown and prospered through service to the Latino community in Adams Morgan and throughout DC, and this year is celebrating its 30th year in business in Adams Morgan.

Dilone is an entrepreneur whose roots are firmly planted in Adams Morgan. Her parents were the owners of Casa Dilone, one of DC’s first Latin American grocery business. Casa Dilone succeeded through knowing the community and its needs.

That philosophy is still in practice today at Crystal. The agency is a long-time supporter of Fiesta D.C. and other community events that celebrate the Mt. Pleasant and Adams Morgan neighborhoods. Dilone also supports and is the Board President of Housing Counseling Services, Inc. and an active Board Member of the Greater Washington Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (GWHCC). Crystal Insurance staff are active members of 3 Business Networking International chapters (BNI) in DC.

Dilone and her staff have worked closely with the GWHCC in community events at Carlos Rosario International Public Charter School, at Centro Nia, and at Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton’s Annual Small Business Fair to help individuals and businesses enroll for the Affordable Care Act with DC Health Link. Dilone and her staff regularly hold information and education sessions for their clients, with topics like buying your first home, property safety, and entrepreneurship.

ABRA holds training for new ABC Licensees and members of the public - August 14th

The Alcoholic Beverage Regulation Administration (ABRA) will hold a special training for new ABC licensees and members of the public from 2-5 p.m. on Thursday, August 14 that will cover:

• District ABC laws and regulations (including recent changes to the law)
• How to work effectively with the community
• Settlement Agreements
• Expectations of ABC licensees
• Tips for best practices
• Noise abatement and sound management

Workshop for business owners interested in moving, expanding or relocating in DC - August 13th

The Government of the District of Columbia offers a variety of incentives for businesses who plan to open or relocate in DC. This workshop on August 13th will provide information on the various incentive programs available including the DC Tech incentives, HUBZone program, the Great Streets program and the Revenue Bond program.
