1) Tuesday, October 13th AMPBID Annual Meeting and board elections

The Annual Meeting of the AMPBID will be Tuesday, October 13, 2015 at 5pm, at the Festival Center at 1640 Columbia Road, NW. Postcards were mailed to all property owners and business owners in August.

Ward 1 Councilmember Brianne Nadeau will give opening remarks.

AMPBID Annual Meeting Election Process

At the October 13th Annual Meeting, BID members will have the opportunity to vote for candidates for 5 board slots: three property owners and two business owners. Four board members currently holding those positions have been renominated for another term and have agreed to serve if elected.

Those are:

* Jessica White, property owner

* Matt Wexler, property owner

* Louis Courembis, property owner

* Constantine Stavropoulos, business owner

One business owner, Joanna Robinson, is leaving the board at the end of the term and Justin Abad, from Cashion's and Pop's Sea Bar, has been nominated to run for her seat.

AMPBID Annual Meeting Election Process

Each person eligible for election as a member of the Board may be nominated by: 1) the nominating committee, or 2) by a member petition submitted to the Chair of the Nominating Committee (Steve Greenleigh) at least 30 days prior to the date of the meeting (so additional nominations must be received by September 13th - no additional nominations were received other than the Nominating Committee's recommendations); provided that only business owners can nominate business owners and property owners can only nominate property owners and a petition shall require the signature of no less than ten (10) members to nominate a member of the Board. Each nominee either shall be present at the annual meeting or shall consent to such nomination by a written document.

Voting

Per the by-laws, any properties for which BID taxes are over 60 days delinquent, may not vote nor may they nominate members to the board.

For each class of member, the ballot will list all the candidate names, and members will vote for the number of open slots in that category. For example, there are two business owner slots. All members will have the opportunity to vote for two candidates from the list of all business owner candidates.

Proxies

Proxy votes are allowed.

Pursuant to the BID bylaws, those interested in voting in the board elections by proxy can either contact the BID to request a proxy form, or can develop their own form, as long as it includes: the date of the meeting at which it is applicable (October 13) full names, addresses and the dated signatures of both the individual issuing the proxy and the witness(es) to the signature. The proxy voter can be anyone to whom the property or business owner designates to vote for them and DOES NOT have to be a member of the Adams Morgan Partnership BID. All proxy forms must meet all these criteria to be accepted.

The BID will have a proxy form available by fax, mail and by email.

3) Rescheduled: Adams Morgan Porch Fest - October 24

We’re on our third year of Adams Morgan PorchFest — a celebration of the

deep musical talent that exists in the DC metro area. Last year 40+ musicians/

bands participated including members of the National Symphony Orchestra.

We transformed the front porches, patios and stoops of Adams Morgan

homes and businesses into “stages for a day” where local talent could be

heard by all for free.

It was a ton of fun, thanks to many of you, with dozens of local music acts

playing about at a dozen locations in Adams Morgan.  Neighbors gathered,

kids danced, and the streets came alive thanks to the generosity of musicians

sharing their art.

Adams Morgan PorchFest will be Saturday October 24th from 2pm-6pm

(an hour earlier because it gets dark earlier by then). This will follow the

Adams Morgan Apple Festival and apple pie contest that morning at the

Farmer's Market.

From famous jazz legends like Charlie Byrd and Keter Betts to homegrown

soul acts like Father’s Children, Adams Morgan has a rich music tradition that

PorchFest hopes to continue.

We will need more musicians because of the postponement so please help us

spread the word about Adams Morgan PorchFest.  We’d like to grow this

bigger and better each year. We do still need volunteers to staff each of the

porches. Cultural Tourism DC helps us recruit volunteers. Please visit them

After the contest, pies will be sold by the piece for $5.00, the proceeds will go

to Christ House, a local Adams Morgan non-profit. The winner will receive a
2-week CSA membership from the Farmer's Market.

To enter the apple pie contest:

Friday October 16 at 12 noon with your name, phone number and type of

apple pie you will make. Local Adams Morgan businesses are welcome to

enter the competition.

Anyone who enters before the cut off can select their apples at the Licking

Creek Bend Farm stand at the Adams Morgan Farmer’s Market on Saturday,

October 17 FOR FREE.

Please bring a card with your ingredients so that we may accommodate dietary

restrictions. Please make a minimum of 3 pies.

You can make more but please let us know how many you plan to make.

We hope that folks will be able to enjoy tasting the pies as well.

5) New project - Welcome bags!

Calling All Adams Morgan Businesses!

With new residential developments come new residents, and potentially new customers for you. As we have done in the past, we will be assembling "welcome bags" to introduce the newest members of our community to you with deals, discounts, giveaways, edible treats...anything you can think of that will help make your business memorable. Local businesses are the most convenient option for new residents of Adams Morgan...but knowing you're here, how to find you and what you offer is critical.

We hope to distribute several hundred bags in October, so please let us know if you would like to include something from your business (we would need a few hundred of whatever you provide) and we will coordinate a pick up time. Ideally, we would have these items in hand in the next 10 days, with perishable items (already packaged with your business name attached) provided on the final day, Thursday, October 15th.

If you want to participate but have a problem making that deadline, please share that with us. The more businesses that participate, the greater the impact this promotion will have.

7) Lights of Adams Morgan contest!

Boost Your Holiday Business through The Lights of Adams Morgan

Some of the volunteers, both business owners and residents, who helped organize Adams Morgan Day are starting a new project — The Lights of Adams Morgan — a month-long series of holiday decorations, lights and activities during the month of December.

We would love for your business to participate! An important element involves as many businesses as possible dressing their storefronts and display windows for the holidays, so that shoppers and diners notice a visible difference and are drawn to the businesses of Adams Morgan for their holiday shopping and cheer.  We recommend you do any of the following:

▪        Decorate your storefront and display windows for the holidays;

▪        Create a holiday menu items or offer holiday products;

▪        Donate prizes to go to the best decorated businesses;

▪        Organize your own holiday events or sales;

▪        Hold charity drives; or

▪        Host an event organized by The Lights of Adams Morgan volunteers.

The Lights of Adams Morgan volunteers will publicize holiday activities in Adams Morgan, through press, social media, list serves and word of mouth. Be sure to report your holiday plans by emailing john.zottoli@gmail.com or calling John at 202-506-5912.

Preliminary ideas include a specified evening to launch the month-long celebration of the season, requesting choral groups to walk our main corridors caroling, seeking sponsors, and incorporating existing or new philanthropic holiday projects. The main purpose is to show holiday spirit and to draw new holiday traffic to the businesses of Adams Morgan.

According to their website the Chinese Embassy and SANY America Inc refer Chinese businessmen and visiting dignitaries to AsukiSQ hair salon, and they also serve as the official stylists for the Miss Asia American Beauty Pageant.

DISB Access to Capital Survey

The DC Department of Insurance, Securities, and Banking (DISB) is conducting a study on the challenges and barriers faced by small businesses in obtaining access to capital.  DISB is the City’s financial oversight body and is in a unique position to drive policy about how and when credit should be extended to business borrowers.

Members of the Adams Morgan Partnership Business Improvement District (AMPBID) will have a unique opportunity to provide input that might shape future policy, by participating in this important survey.

News from the DC Circulator

Calling all Models for a DC Circulator Photo Shoot!

We invite you to be a model for a DC Circulator photo shoot on Sunday, October 18 from 6am to 2pm .

The shoot will be broken into two shifts— 6am – 10am and 10am to 2pm .

The photos will be used on www.DCCirculator.com , Circulator’s social media channles and future advertising campaigns.

We encourage families to join us as we want to represent the diversity of our ridership.

DC Circulator Launches New Website During 10th Anniversary of Service

The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) launched a new DC Circulator website today as part of ongoing activities recognizing the bus system’s 10-year anniversary. The new website features refreshed visual elements, enhanced functionality and improved navigation that allows users to quickly access important bus and route information with ease. Built on a modern platform featuring responsive design for all screen sizes, the new site offers visitors more timely, relevant information and an improved user experience on any device.

Visitors can now find information faster:

·         New drop-down navigation organized by the Circulator’s brand attributes of ride, explore and connect

·         The schedule and interactive map —the site’s most popular pages—are prominently featured on the homepage and available at the top of every section of the site

·         The site also features a search bar for instant access to information

Bus and route information is easier to understand:

·         Redesigned route pages feature larger maps with more surrounding detail

·         Simplified bus stop lists make it easy for riders to find the nearest stop and identify which direction the bus is headed

Important updates are always at the forefront:

·         The homepage features pertinent service status information with quick access to real-time service alerts

Dear Residents and Business Owners,
We the executive committee of the Third District Police Citizens Advisory Council (CAC) are writing to ask for your support in helping to make our 3D Police Awards Banquet a success. It is the desire of the CAC that this event continues to foster stronger relations between the residents and businesses of 3D and the department. The banquet will be held on Saturday December 12, 2015 from 7pm to 11pm at the Washington Navy Yard. This event helps us to recognize officers who go above and beyond to make our daily lives in the city better. You can show your support by purchasing a ticket, sponsoring a table, or placing an ad in our souvenir booklet.
This event is designed with fun in mind, as well as with the broader goal of building community strength and harmony. One of the first steps in that process is the simple one of getting better acquainted, thereby fostering mutual regard and understanding, and improving morale and public safety. The Citizens Advisory Council banquet serves two purposes. It recognizes outstanding MPD officers for their commitment to the community and acts as a fundraiser to provide financial support for the CAC to use at other future community events.
The banquet promises to be an enjoyable evening honoring the work of those who help keep our neighborhoods safe. The CAC is asking for financial assistance from individuals and businesses to make this event successful.

Adams Morgan Farmers' Market for Saturday October 10th

ADAMS MORGAN FARMERS MARKET

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 10

This week we'll be featuring STAYMAN-WINESAP APPLES - originated in Kansas in 1866 and one of the crispest winter apples which has a tart, rich, wine-like flavor.

Look for RUSTY COATS, NORTHERN SPY, SHEEPNOSE, WOLF RIVER and YORKS, in the next few weeks.

We grow many varieties of WINTER SQUASH - including some that almost no one buys - like WINTER BANANA.  This week, we'll feature ACORN and BUTTERNUT SQUASH varieties.  Both contain more protein, vitamin A, folic acid, potassium, and anti-carcinagens than the summer varieties.  Michael has been eating the seeds (cooked in olive oil and garlic).  Plenty recipes for squash soups with ginger, etc. are available.  They are also wonderful baked, using the ACORN as a cup or bowl for all sorts of dishes.

ACORN and BUTTERNUT SQUASH are a Native American vegetable called "askutasquash".  European explorers called them edible gourds or melons.

CAULIFLOWER (Cabbage with a college education?) go back to ancient Rome although it probably originated in Asia.  One of the tastiest dishes we've had was served at the old "Cities" restaurant here in Adams Morgan.  It was a soup from pureed CAULIFLOWER with creme freshe, rum and garlic (a recipe that goes back to 1621!).  Yum!  We'll have plenty of CAULIFLOWER Saturday at $3.50.  (you'll have to get the rum elsewhere!).

CAULIFLOWER is another vegetable high in anti-carcinagins, sulfur, calcium, vitamin A & C, folic acid (that's been known to prevent spina befida in babies so pregnant women should eat CAULIFLOWER!).

We'll still have:

TOMATOES - many varieties of pesticide free HEIRLOOMS
TOMATILLOS
BEETS - first week!
HERBS - note that DILL and CILANTRO are back!
COLLARDS
ITALIAN EGGPLANT and ASIAN EGGPLANTS
BITTER MELON** (see below for description) - bitter, used in Asian cooking and high in nutrients, see below

SWISS CHARD
HOT PEPPERS (they're starting to come in)
PESTICIDE-FREE APPLES - these have surface blemishes but that's part of being pesticide-free.  They're delicious!! same price as the IPM apples - $1.49/lb
HUSK CHERRIES - this crop didn't do so well, so there is a limited amount this season
...plus other seasonal goodies.

DON'T FORGET TO BRING YOUR BAGS and extras for the market if you have (we can use newspaper bags as well).  It pains us to give out or sell plastic bags!!
