Adams Morgan Movie Nights returns Tuesday!
|
We are thrilled to announce the return of the award-winning, six-week movie series:
Adams Morgan Movie Nights
! Enjoy free movies every Tuesday evening through June 25 at the Marie Reed Elementary School Soccer Field at 18th Street NW and California Street NW. Movies will kick-off just after sunset at approximately 9pm. Attendees are encouraged to arrive early to get a prime spot on the field which boasts tiered, amphitheater-style seating.
While we wait to watch the world’s greatest athletes compete at the upcoming Paris Summer Olympics, we’re getting in the spirit with a sports-themed movie lineup! From gold medal fan-favorites and comedies to more serious movies that capture athletes’ determination – you’re sure to love these feel-good flicks. Speaking of medals and awards, the Adams Morgan Partnership BID would like to thank the community for its support as this movie series continues to receive recognition like “Best Outdoor Movie Series” from Washington City Paper!

Adams Morgan PRIDE Storefront Contest
|
All businesses with storefronts within the
Adams Morgan BID boundaries
are invited to participate/enter the contest for a cash prize. The first place winner will receive a $1,000 cash prize, the second place winner will receive a $500 cash prize, and the third place winner will receive a $250 cash prize. Decorations must be Pride-themed and viewable from the sidewalk (exterior decorations). You are welcome to add decorations to the inside of your business as well (bonus points!). Our hope is to come together as a community to make Adams Morgan as festive as possible, increase neighborhood foot traffic during Pride celebrations, and receive increased media attention. SWIMMING Public Art Project Opens June 6 At Marie Reed Plaza
|
Bangladesh-American artist and climate activist Monica Jahan Bose will bring a massive art installation to Adams Morgan from June 6-20th. Featuring 22 blue Bangladeshi saris arranged to evoke a swimming pool and a huge wave, the SWIMMING public art project brings together communities in Washington DC and Bangladesh, speaking to the healing properties of water and swimming and inequities in access. Located at Marie Reed Plaza, the exhibition will be open 24/7 and visitors will use their phones to access a "VideoSoundwalk" with poetry and songs by the participants. The project explores the deep and essential connections we have to water as our world faces increased flooding, drought, and rising sea levels due to climate change. There will be multiple exciting events, including poetry slams and performances, film screenings, and site visits/artist talks. A short film about the project will be previewed as part of the Adams Morgan Movie Nights on June 11 and 18.

Federal Update: Service Charge Fairness Act Introduced
US Congressman Earl Blumenauer (D-OR) this week introduced the
Service Charge Tax Fairness Act
, which among other measures, would exclude service charges from FICA taxes.

Deeper Dive:
The bill seeks to treat service charges as tips, including mandating service charges go directly to workers as wages and exempting service charges from calculating overtime.

Of Note:
The bill does not mandate restaurants use service charges.
-
Meanwhile:
The FTC last year proposed banning restaurant service charges as part of its push against so-called “junk fees” in the airline, hotel, and concerts industries.

Office Closure
ABCA’s office will be closed on Monday, May 27, 2024, in observance of Memorial Day and will reopen at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 28.
Extended Holiday Hours
In conjunction with Memorial Day, alcohol licensed businesses registered in the
Extended Holiday Hours Program
may sell, serve, and allow on-premises consumption of alcohol until 4:00 a.m. and operate 24 hours starting the evening of Friday, May 24, and ending at 4:00 a.m. on Monday, May 27.
Licensees may confirm enrollment by locating their establishment’s name on the
Extended Holiday Hours Eligible Establishments | 2024 Memorial Day Weekend roster

The Alcoholic Beverage and Cannabis Administration anticipates several
Class A Retail (Liquor) Store
licenses becoming available next month with the exact number being announced via email on Monday, June 10.
Applications for an initial license or a class change will be accepted starting at
9:00 a.m. on Monday, June 24
. Applications will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis and may be submitted in person or via email.
Early and incomplete applications will be rejected. Incompleteness includes failure to complete all required fields or include entity documents, and Letter of Intent to Lease or valid lease.
