4)Best Practices for Social Media

Hey all!  Here comes Spring, and with it, lots of fun folks will visit our Adams

Morgan businesses, and there will be LOTS of opportunities for great press.

Sometimes we get tongue-tied when the cameras roll, so here is a little primer

that will help you best support your business’ press efforts.

What to say to help your business be seen at its best

“My business specializes in…..”

“I offer my customers….. which they can’t get just anywhere.”

“We go the extra mile to…. in order to make your experience with us memorable.”

“We are unique because we….”

“We look forward to a time when…”

“We are a strong community because we….”

Kind words for your neighbors whenever possible.

What you should avoid saying

Profanity.

Complaints that make you look negative – this is your 15 second opportunity to

get some great press for your business.

Negative things about customers.

Long comments, because they will pare them down & not get your complete

point across.

Things you don’t want to see in print.  Be sure that you are willing to see what

you have said.

Things that are unkind, because it reflects badly on you.

Also, remember that your social media (Facebook, Twitter, etc) is the new

‘reporter’ in the industry, so bear in mind the ideas above when you post –

because real reporters read your feed .

Finally, you should remember to:

·         Thank the reporter for thinking of you in putting together their story

·         Ask for their card, or offer one of yours so you can keep in touch for

future stories

·         Ask them to send you a link when the piece runs (so you can post on

your site and social media)

·         Offer them a beverage, even a glass of water as they are wrapping up,

to show your hospitality

Keep the reporter’s info in a folder or binder, in case you ever want to reach

out directly to the media.

6)DDOT proposes new sign regulations

This may be of interest to some Adams Morgan business owners and commercial property owners.

The Committee of 100 of the Federal City is asking members and friends to

Oppose DDOT’s Plan to Permit Throughout DC Jumbo High-Intensity Electronic Billboards Giant Wall-Mounted Billboards & Rooftop Signs.

DDOT proposes to radically change DC’s sign control and billboard ordinances to spread electronic advertising on the sides of buildings and rooftops throughout the city.  The draft regulations are now out for public comment. The Committee of 100 urges you to oppose these radical and unwarranted changes that constitute, in effect, the Gigantic Digital Billboard Pollution Protection Act , bythe current deadline of May 13, 2015 .  You may view a fact sheet online here: http://www.committeeof100.net/download/transportation/2015-04-27%20C100%20Call%20to%20Action%20Against%20Digital%20Billboards.pdf

Streetsense hosts another forum TOMORROW April 28th from 5 to 7 pm

Please join Streetsense for the second in a series of quarterly forums exploring what it takes to build strong vibrant streets and communities.

This installment will examine fresh, creative approaches
to streetscape design and its impact on neighborhood character development.

Streetsense's second event will focus on innovative streetscape design methods and provide an opportunity for leaders of different BIDs, retailers, experts, and service providers to network and get to know one another.

Streetsense is very excited to have Chris Shaheen from DC Office of Planning and Colin Greene from HOK presenting, and think it will provide a great platform to speak from the public regulatory angle as well as private development and implementation.

This will be a beneficial forum for property owners, business owners and community members in Adams Morgan (and all throughout the DC area!).

Like the first forum, they intentionally kept costs very low to make this an accessible event for the community. AIA Potomac Valley and APA are co-sponsoring the event, offering continuing education credits through both organizations.

News from ABRA

Applications Available for New Types of Licenses

Beginning Tuesday, April 21, District businesses can get a head start submitting applications for several new types of alcoholic beverage licenses. The Alcoholic Beverage Regulation Administration (ABRA) will begin processing the applications after the Congressional review period expires for the Omnibus Alcoholic Beverage Regulation Amendment Act of 2014 , which is projected to occur on Saturday, May 2.

As part of the new legislation, a distillery can apply for an on-site sales and consumption permit. The permit would allow a spirit manufacturer to sell their products on site in cocktails for the first time. Wineries will also be able to apply for the permit, which would allow them to sell and serve glasses of their wine to customers. Applications for the permit are available online .

The proposed law also allows organizers of sporting or performing art events to apply for a new festival license , which would temporarily permit the sale and consumption of alcoholic beverages at events for up to 15 days. The license would eliminate the need for organizers to obtain several one-day permits over the course of longer events. An organizer could apply for the license every three months.

Applications may also be submitted by bakeries that produce alcohol-infused confections, such as cupcakes. The new class C manufacturer’s license would allow bakeries to sell baked goods—with a maximum of five percent of alcohol by volume—to persons 21 years of age or older. Bakeries could also sell the products to other businesses that have alcoholic beverage licenses.

Licensees that have questions can contact ABRA by emailing or by calling 202-442-4423.

New Law Will Limit Alcohol Ads in Windows

ABC licensees will need to take a look at their establishment’s windows to ensure that they comply with new restrictions on alcohol ads that could take effect as early as May.

As part of a pending law , alcohol ads can only cover up to 25 percent of an establishment’s windows. The restrictions will apply to all alcohol licensed establishments in the District.

Investigators from the Alcoholic Beverage Regulation Administration (ABRA) will begin enforcing the new law once the Congressional review period expires; however, establishments will be granted a written warning for a first-time offense of the new rule. ABRA will notify licensees of when the law officially takes effect.

Outdoor Patio Permit for Manufacturers Proposed

A proposed law could go into effect in the District that would allow breweries, distilleries and wineries to operate outdoor patios similar to restaurants and taverns.

If approved, the Manufacturer’s Sidewalk Cafe and Summer Garden Endorsement Amendment Act of 2015 would permit an alcohol manufacturer that holds an on-site sales and consumption permit to operate an outdoor patio area from 1-9 p.m., seven days a week. The proposed law would only affect manufacturer licensees in the District and would not impact brew pubs, distillery pubs or wine pubs.

The law was proposed by Mayor Bowser on Thursday, April 3 as part of the Fiscal Year 2016 Budget Support Act of 2015. The Alcoholic Beverage Regulation Administration will keep licensees informed if the bill is passed by the District of Columbia Council.

Quarterly Statements Due April 30

ABC licensees of hotels and restaurants are due to file first-quarter statements with the Alcoholic Beverage Regulation Administration (ABRA) by Thursday, April 30. Statements need to include the following from January 1, 2015 through March 31, 2015:

  • Gross sales receipts for food and alcohol, and
  • Total expenses for the purchase of food and alcohol.

Quarterly statements may be submitted online or by using a printed form . Complete details are available on ABRA’s website . Licensees that have questions can contact ABRA Compliance Analyst Monica Clark by emailing or by calling (202) 442-4438.

Information about CADRIplus (not an endorsement just sharing info)

CADRPlus ( www.getcadrplus.com/moreinfo) is a bundled services option for individuals/employers.  This is an option that is a non-insurance product and can be used to supplement an HSA account; or someone who has no insurance and would like to speak to a licensed, certified doctor in their state and get a prescription, if necessary for many issues that do NOT necessitate the Emergency Room!  (upper respiratory, sinus, ear ache, sore throat, etc.)

If you're travelling, and you left your prescription at home, perfect way to call a doctor and get a refill (if applicable)...You

might have a high deductible HSA account -- this is a perfect companion.............. many applications.

Marilyn Mitchelll, an Adams Morgan resident, is a brand ambassador for this product in Washington, DC.

The CADR (Call A Doctor piece) is Teledoc, an award-winning telemedicine service that has been in business for 11 + years; NCQA certified; and allows an individual to speak to a licensed, board certified medical doctor with at

least 5+ years of experience - by phone or internet.  The average wait time is 14 minues!   You can use the service 23/7/365 for a small monthly fee.   You will talk to a medical doctor; not a physician's assistant; LPN, etc. when you go around to drop-in clinics.  Don't need to sit with sick people for hours; don't have to wait days to see the doctor....

Teledoc usually markets to very large companies; insurance companies; federal/state governments, etc..  CADRPlus has taken this concept to the small business/individual market.   Save time, money for the whole family. You have a choice. The employee loves because it cuts down on absenteeism; insurance expenses, builds confidence with employers, etc.

The "plus" side of the company focuses on:  cutting prescription costs; reduce lab costs; behavioral health consults (Licensed Social Worker)............. all for a low monthly fee.  Most people are paying more for their insurance, if they have insurance -- and this bundle will same them hundreds if not thousands of dollars! ; and it's convenient.

Marilyn is available for any questions. Many people walk around without insurance.  CADRPlus can help.
