again this year. Adams Morgan regularly has one of the highest registration rates in the city and we plan on having refreshments and other goodies available to riders in addition to the free t-shirt.

In memory of Charlie McCormick
|
Charlie McCormick, owner of
City Bikes
passed away last week. Charlie was a passionate cycling advocate, believing that bikes & biking were transformational; that our lives, our communities, and our world could be made more perfect if people chose to get out & ride.
On Friday during our pit stop for Bike to Work Day — an event Charlie helped organize from the very beginning — we will have a chalk board and memory book set up to allow people to leave messages in memory of Charlie and his impact on the community.
We will be set up in Unity Park (in front of City Bikes) from 7:30am-9:30am at Columbia Road and Champlain Street, NW.

Spring PorchFest coming Saturday!

We're excited to announce the first-ever
Spring PorchFest
on
Saturday, May 20 from 2-6pm
! Over the last 10 years, we've received overwhelming community support for the October PorchFest, so we decided to add a second PorchFest to the neighborhood events lineup. With over 70+ bands, this Spring edition will showcase some of DC’s best local musical talent featuring nearly every musical genre, including classic rock, funk, go-go, rap, reggae, blue grass, classical, and pop. Seventeen+ porches, patios, and stoops will become stages for the day, drawing music-lovers from around the region into the tree-lined streets and small businesses of Adams Morgan.
Event patrons can pick up a music map and wristband at the event headquarters located in the plaza at the corner of Columbia and Adams Mill Roads NW. Event wristbands are FREE and provide attendees with dozens of discounts at various Adams Morgan businesses. After stopping by the event headquarters, guests can stroll through the neighborhood for nonstop musical performances from 2-6pm, enjoy lunch, dinner, or drinks at a neighborhood hangout, and shop for unique gifts at local boutiques.

Adams Morgan Moratorium Hearing
|
The Alcoholic Beverage Cannabis Administration (ABCA) will hold a hearing at
10:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 13, 2023
, to receive public comment concerning the renewal of the Adams Morgan Moratorium Zone. The Board recently extended the moratorium on an emergency basis. It now seeks comment on a resolution adopted by Advisory Neighborhood Commission (ANC) 1C that, if approved by the Board, would increase the number of allowable tavern licenses to 25 to be phased in with no more than 4 new tavern licenses per year. The ANC Resolution is available on ABCA’s website www.abca.dc.gov.

DC Council Expands Grants for Retail, Commercial Property Buyers
DC Council yesterday approved a number of proposals in the Fiscal Year 2024 budget to support our neighborhood restaurants, bars, and other small businesses.
What’s in It:
The $19.7 billion budget includes:
-
$3.2 million in new downtown retail support grants.
-
Adding $6 million to the
Commercial Acquisition Fund
, which provides down payment assistance for eligible businesses to purchase commercial property.
-
Increasing the
DC Main Streets budget
by 30 percent. The 28 Main Streets programs throughout the District work to attract and retain small businesses, improve commercial properties and streetscapes, and promote the area to customers.

Expanding the New York Avenue Great Streets boundaries to Trinidad.
What’s Next:
A second budget reading and vote is scheduled June 6.
Bowser Proposes Greater Gun Penalties, More Pretrial Detention
Following up her
Public Safety Summit
, DC Mayor Muriel Bowser this week proposed a package of public safety legislation for the Council to consider this summer.
Deeper Dive:
The proposed legislation includes:

Increased penalties for illegal gun possession.
-
Enhanced penalties for crimes that victimize individuals with physical or mental impairments, transit and for-hire vehicle employees, transit passengers, and at rec centers.
-
Providing greater discretion for courts to determine who should be held pre-trial, including defendants previously convicted of a violent crime.
-
Make strangulation a type of felony assault. (Strangulation is a predictor of future more deadly violence.)

Increased reimbursements for the popular
Private Security Camera System Incentive Program

Bigger Picture:
At every opportunity we have, RAMW emphasizes with lawmakers that violent crime and public safety top members' concerns. We appreciate the Mayor’s proposed legislation and look forward to supporting it in Council.
Reminder: Register by June 2 for Extended Fourth of July Hours
Businesses enrolled in the Extended Holiday Hours Program may sell, serve, and allow on-premises consumption of alcohol until 4 am and operate 24 hours.

More Reminders: Temporary Sidewalk Table Permits Expire May 31
Operators in DC have until May 31 to apply to convert their Temporary Sidewalk Table Service permits (issued at the start of the pandemic) to permanent sidewalk cafes.

DC OHR Anti-Sexual Harassment Training Class at RAMW
|
The
Tipped Wage Workers Fairness Amendment Act (TWWF)
requires District employers who hire individuals earning tips as wages to complete an anti-sexual harassment training by a DC Office of Human Rights (OHR) certified trainer every two years. The implementation of Initiative 82
does not
affect this requirement.
The deadline to complete TWWF anti-sexual harassment training is August 31, 2023.
RAMW is happy to announce that we are able to offer several sessions at $35 per person. The in-person sessions are open to employees, managers, owners, and operators.

💸 Commercial Property Acquisition Fund (DMPED)
The Commercial Property Acquisition Fund will provide eligible businesses with down payment assistance of up to $750,000 or 25% of the sale price, whichever is less, for the acquisition of commercial property in the District. This year, businesses will need to complete three mandatory sessions in order to apply for the Fund. OPEN now on a rolling basis until funds are expended.
