Adams Morgan Presents the Fifth Annual FREE Summer Concert Series

We’re proud to showcase local artists every Saturday starting on June 1 until July 6, from 5pm to 7pm at the corner of Columbia and 18th NW on the plaza in front of BB&T Bank. Adams Morgan will be the destination for all music lovers. Our lineup has something for everyone whether it’s Brazilian jazz, country or rock-n-roll!

A new addition this year, HULA HOOPS! We will have a dozen hula hoops each Saturday for adults and kids of all ages to shake your groove thang!

We will have a limited number of chairs for audience members. Please feel free to bring your own beach chair. In the event of rain, the concert will be canceled for that day. Due to the nature of the series, there will not be a rain date.

“This is a free, family-friendly event designed to bring the community together to hear some great, eclectic music before going to dinner, going out for the night or putting the kids to bed,” said Kristen Barden, Executive Director of the Adams Morgan Partnership BID. “We are pleased to take advantage of this public space for a FREE Summer Concert Series and hope many people will join us.”

Here’s a full listing of the 2013 Summer Concert Series:

June 1 – Kid Goat

An alt-Country band that melds blues, country and rock-n-roll in an all Americana style. Bring your family to this event--All the rugrats running around their rehearsal space inspired a children’s version of the band, Kids’ Goat, which will play the first set.

June 8 – Batida Diferente

Formerly Trio Scorro, this quintet brews up Brazilian jazz, bossas and sambas for a saucy sound.

June 15 – Wheelie

This super-fun indie art rock band’s sound is propelled by world and dance beats. In addition, the dynamic hula hooper, Spinnabel Lee , will join the band for an exciting, circus-inspired performance. Spinnabel will be joined by Rachel Rhodes, also an avid hooper.

June 22 – Doug Stevenson & The Spades

Veterans of the DC music scene, the band plays blues, jazz, swing and rock-n-roll.

June 29 – The Originators

Get ready for supercharged Ska Punk Reggae from this Las Vegas house band.

July 6 – Devils Walk As Saints

Get ready for an eclectic mix of unique music with sounds that range from the heavy to the spacey to the raw.

All Adams Morgan businesses offer FREE daytime parking validation (no purchase necessary) in the Colonial parking garage (access is from 18th Street, NW on the east side just north of Belmont Road, NW) for up to four hours for only $7.00. Park at the garage, take the ticket from the garage, a business owner will give you a card with four hours validated then return to the garage and pay $7.00. This deal is available seven days a week until 5 PM when regular rates begin to apply. The validation is only good for up to four hours, any fraction thereafter, whether before 5pm or not, will incur the maximum fee. If you only want to park for up to two hours – there is a validation for that also. For up to two hours, businesses will validate your parking for only $3.00.

Interns Rock - June 7-16, 2013

20,000 Interns in Washington, DC eligible for special discounts and promotions from June 7 – 16, 2013

InternsROCK! a city-wide intern appreciation week organized by The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars (TWC) will take place June 7-16, 2013.

With the cooperation of D.C. businesses, organizations and venues, interns will receive discounts at area restaurants, retail outlets and events during the week when they present an InternsROCK! key tag. Last year the third annual InternsROCK! was an overwhelming success with 2,500 students and 60 local businesses participating.

All individuals interning in the greater Washington, DC area are eligible to participate. Visit www.internsrockdc.com to pre-register. The key tags will be available for pick-up from June 3 - 7th at The Washington Center's Headquarters (1333 16th Street NW) and The Washington Center's Residential Academic Facility (1005 3rd Street NE) from 9:30 am - 7 p.m.

Changes to Adams Morgan Businesses

Essence Cleaners at 1664 Columbia Road, NW #23, is now Seven Brothers Dry Cleaners. Shewangizaw Worku and his family welcome you to try them out for all your clothing care needs. Hours are: Monday - Saturday  7 am to 8 pm and Sundays 10 am to 5 pm. Same day service is available if you drop off before 9 am and pick up after 5 pm Monday through Saturday. Shawarma Spot at 2418 18th Street, NW is open under new management. In March we saw a sign that indicated the new name would be Kabob Doner. They have kept the name Shawarma Spot and added kebabs to the menu. http://www.shawarmaspot.com

Training for Adams Morgan businesses with MPD and ABRA on May 29th - best practices for nightlife establishments

Assistant Chief Patrick Burke from MPD and Fred Moosally, Director of ABRA, will be conducting a training on the newly released MPD manual "Best Practices for Nightlife Establishments" on Wednesday May 29th from 3:30 to 5 PM at the Reef at 2446 18th Street, NW. This is only for Adams Morgan businesses.

The manual is designed to help owners and managers of night-time establishments develop a safe nightlife atmosphere. All attendees will get a copy of the manual and MPD will review the contents with participants.

If your business is open in the evening, please consider sending staff to this training. Restaurant managers and security staff should absolutely attend.

Fifth Annual Adams Morgan Summer Concert Series - June 1 to July 6th - opportunities for businesses

PLEASE CONSIDER OFFERING A SINGLE-DAY DISCOUNT AND ATTRACT ALL OUR SUMMER CONCERT GOERS TO YOUR STORE OR RESTAURANT.

Would increased foot traffic and more customers on summer Saturdays be music to your ears? If so, you will be thrilled to hear about a new initiative we will be putting into place for the summer, starting with the June 1 kickoff concert by crowd favorite Kid Goat.  For the very first time, every concertgoer will be able to receive a same-day promotion in participating businesses if s/he attended our concert.  We would like you to offer a promotion so that visitors feel welcome and truly encouraged to frequent our businesses.

As you know, in each of the past 4 years, our summer concerts have drawn hundreds of people to the neighborhood each summer Saturday.  Before and after the concert, and during intermission, we always encourage concertgoers to shop and eat in Adams Morgan. Still, it was a bit of a mystery to know who did stick around, since we couldn't track them.

Finally, this year, we will prove that you can lead a horse to water AND make them drink!

We have come up with a way to not just bring visitors to our community to hear the concert, but also to encourage attendees to visit our best businesses.  All concertgoers will receive a distinctive red paper wrist band at the concert.  Upon presenting this wrist band in participating businesses, the concertgoer will be entitled to a special discount available just that day, and only to concertgoers with the wrist band.

This is where you come in.

The more discounts our businesses offer, the more attractive the wrist band, and concert attendance, will be. You shape the deal--a percentage off, a "buy X get Y" deal, perhaps a freebie for concertgoers with any purchase.  Just make it persuasive, so our concertgoers, their toes still tapping, will boogie on down to your business to spend their hard-earned dollars.

We will also hand out a complete list of all businesses offering some kind of special (along with details about the special) at the concert each week.

Congresswoman Norton's Small Business Fair - June 4th

Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton is hosting a Small Business Fair only for DC businesses and residents on Tuesday June 4th from 8 am to 4 pm at the Washington Convention Center, 801 Mount Vernon Place (between 7th and 9th Street, NW).

The plenary session will feature SBA Director Antonio Doss who will speak about how the SBA can help you! There will also be remarks from the Small Business owner of the year on how he learned to succeed as a small business in DC.

Additionally, there will be one-on-one counseling with experts on how to make your business successful including:

* How to write a winning business plan

* Optimizing your marketing strategy
