Mayor Muriel Bowser announces 2024 Great Streets grantees at DC Arts Center
|
The announcement recognized 41 awardees of the FY24 Great Streets Retail, Locally Made Manufacturing, and Neighborhood Prosperity Fund grants.
The event also featured a Maker Showcase spotlighting eight locally made manufacturers/makers and their remarkable contributions to our city. A fashion show by a Locally Made Manufacturing awardee featured a stunning line of upcycled fashion designs.
The event was held at
DC Arts Center
(2438 18th St., NW) which received a 2023 Great Streets grant allowing them to make much-needed renovations.
Thank you Mayor Bowser for choosing Adams Morgan to showcase these great accomplishments!

available from the Licking Creek Bend Farm. A 6ft tree grown without pesticides can take over 10 years to grow. We grow our trees on what is called "marginal land", land that is too hilly to grow vegetables. For every tree we cut, we plant 6-10 new trees.
This season:
1. We will not be taking individual orders (except for trees 8ft and taller)
2. It will be first come first serve at the Adams Morgan Farmers Market, see details below
3 Trees larger than 8ft need to be special ordered with a pre-purchase deposit please help us gauge the number of trees to bring down each week. let us know if you want a tree and which week you want to pick up. larger trees over 8 feet require special orders.

New Streatery Guidelines Adopted
|
The DDOT Public Space Committee (PSC) adopted new guidelines to support a permanent Streatery Program at the Special Hearing on December 5, 2024. The adopted guidelines are posted to
DDOT’s Streatery website
. Businesses should review the guidelines to understand the new design requirements and permit processes required to continue operating a streatery in public space.
Existing Permittees
If you currently have a permit issued via the temporary Streatery Program, you may continue to operate your temporary streatery under your existing design until
July 31, 2025
. After this date, you will need to have obtained a Streatery Design permit from DDOT to continue operating a streatery. This permit process will require that you bring your existing structure(s) into compliance with the new design requirements.
Beginning January 1, 2025, businesses may apply for the required streatery permits in
TOPS
. To assist with this transition, Kim Vacca will be hosting a series of virtual office hours beginning on December 16
th
. You may register to attend a session by mailing

with your name, business, address and requested date/time. Slots will be filled in a first-come, first-served basis. You can view the available dates/times here:

All
businesses that currently operate a streatery will need to apply for a new permit before July 31, 2025.
Note that businesses in the Adams Morgan streatery pilot project area (18th Street between Kalorama and Columbia Rds.) will not will not need signed/stamped plans for a licensed engineer/architect and will only need to show the overall footprint of the design, tables, seats, and any other elements they want to add.

Metro Station Closures Starting Friday
|
This is a reminder about the upcoming station closures starting this Friday, as part of a major construction project to improve tracks and signaling, impacting some downtown stations between December 20-30, 2024.

During this period, free shuttle buses will replace trains in between affected stations. Shuttles will use the existing bus lanes on H and I streets to speed travel.

Dec. 20-26:
Farragut West, McPherson Square, and the lower level (Blue, Orange, Silver service) at Metro Center will be closed.

Dec. 27-30:
Farragut West, McPherson Square; lower level (Blue, Orange, Silver service) at Metro Center, Federal Triangle, and Smithsonian; and the lower level of L'Enfant Plaza (Blue, Orange, Silver service) will also be closed.

Dec. 31:
All stations reopen.

DC Circulator Service to End Dec. 31, Riders Encouraged to Seek Alternate Routes with Metro
|
The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) announces the final days of operation for the DC Circulator. After December 31, 2024, the service will officially cease operations. After this date, DC Circulator service will no longer be available, and riders are encouraged to seek alternate routes with WMATA’s Metrobus service.
As part of the transition, DDOT has worked closely with other transit partners, including Metrobus, Metrorail, and Capital Bikeshare, to ensure alternative transportation options are accessible to affected riders. Guides outlining these alternatives can be found on the

. DDOT extends its gratitude to riders for their support over the past 19 years and appreciates the community’s understanding during this transition.

Cash Payment Exemptions Pass Council
|

I wanted to update you immediately following yesterday's DC Council vote: The Entertainment Establishment Employee Safety Act has passed its final reading, temporarily exempting businesses that serve alcohol and restaurants that operate 24 hours or until 3 am at least two days a week from being required to accept cash payments. The new law also requires businesses to post their cashless policies for diners.
This is a significant step forward. For the first time, the law recognizes the safety concerns our late-night establishments face when required to keep cash on hand.
Your efforts made this possible. When we first raised these safety concerns, they were met by lawmakers with skepticism. But through your advocacy, conversations with councilmembers, and sharing your front-line experiences, we changed minds. The bill's passage with 10 votes shows how far we've come in making our case.
However, we still have work to do. Many RAMW members – our fast casual restaurants, cafes, bakeries, and other daytime establishments – remain excluded from these protections. Our recent member survey confirms these businesses face the same robbery and burglary risks. Every operator should have the right to choose payment methods that keep their teams safe.
This legislation is also temporary until fall 2025. We are already working with Councilmembers to introduce a permanent bill and hold a hearing early in the new year to work toward a permanent solution that protects all food service establishments.
We'll keep you updated on the current law's implementation and opportunities to help shape a permanent solution that works for everyone.

The student scholarships are designed to assist high school or college level individuals who wish to pursue a higher education at a culinary school or in a hospitality management program.
Professional Industry Scholarships
The professional scholarships are designed to assist individuals who are currently working in the restaurant industry that may wish to pursue career advancement in a foodservice or culinary profession; awarded grant funds can be used for hospitality management and culinary arts classes, skills workshops, professional development courses, and ServSuccess training and certifications.

Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Incentive Program
|
The District of Columbia Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department (FEMS), by authority of DC Official Code § 7-237104a, has established an
Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Incentive Program
to encourage purchase and installation of AEDs in publicly accessible locations within small businesses, places of public worship, small multi-unit apartment, condominium, or cooperative buildings, and nonprofit organizations. Qualified organizations may receive up to a $400 rebate per AED (or up to $750 per building address with multiple AEDs), if such equipment is registered with DCFEMS and made available for public use.
The rebate should be for up to $400 per AED by a business, nonprofit, religious institution, or other entity as defined in DCST7-2371.04A with a maximum rebate of up to $750 per system per address and contingent upon the availability of funds.

2025 ABC Board, Office and Extended Hours Schedule

ABC Board Meeting and ABCA Office Schedule
The Alcoholic Beverage and Cannabis Board (ABC Board) will recess for their winter break following the hearing on Wednesday, December 11, 2024, and reconvene on Wednesday, January 8, 2025.
In addition, ABCA’s office will be closed in observance of Christmas Day on Wednesday, December 25, 2024, and New Year’s Day on Wednesday, January 1, 2025, and will reopen at 8:30 a.m. the following morning.

2025 Extended Hours Schedule

. Approved On-Premises Retailer, Manufacturer with an On-Site Sales and Consumption Permit and Temporary License holders can sell and serve alcohol until 4:00 a.m. and operate up to 24 hours a day in conjunction with District Government and federal holidays.
Eligible licensees must submit an
Extended Holiday Hours Registration Form
at least 30 days before the first holiday for which they would like to extend hours. Once approved, registration is valid for all following holidays throughout the calendar year.
There is no fee to participate. Board Orders and Settlement Agreements may restrict participation.

💸Resilient Food Systems Infrastructure and Equipment Grants
A new grant is now available for food businesses supporting infrastructure and equipment in the middle of the supply chain for the District of Columbia. Eligible projects support food aggregation, processing, manufacturing, storing, transporting, wholesaling, and distribution of regionally produced food products. This program does not support growing crops or direct food sales to consumers or retail outlets.
A total of $1.4 million of RFSI funds to projects that maintain and improve food and agricultural supply chain resiliency through Capital Impact Partners, in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the District of Columbia Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development (DMPED).
