The next Adams Morgan Partnership BID (AMPBID) Board of Directors' meeting will be Tuesday, September 24th, 2013 at 5 PM at Maga Design Studios at 1838 Columbia Road, NW. Among other topics, we will review the "publisher boxes on public space" regulations recently released by DDOT. These are also known as newspaper boxes.  Hope you can join us!

Annual Meeting - October 15

The Annual Meeting of the AMPBID will be Tuesday, October 15, 2012 at 5pm, at Maga Design Studios at 1838 Columbia Road, NW. Postcards were mailed to all property owners and business owners last week.

AMPBID Annual Meeting Election Process

At the October 15th Annual Meeting, BID members will have the opportunity to vote for candidates for 5 board slots: three property owners and two business owners. The board members currently holding those positions have been renominated for another term and have agreed to serve if elected.

Those are:

* Jon Wilson, property owner

* Adam Crain, property owner

* Bill Thomas, property owner

* Arianne Bennett, business owner

* C. Jonathan Wells, business owner

AMPBID Annual Meeting Election Process

Each person eligible for election as a member of the Board may be nominated by: 1) the nominating committee, or 2) by a member petition submitted to the Chair of the Nominating Committee (Matt Wexler) at least 30 days prior to the date of the meeting (so additional nominations must be received by September 15); provided that only business owners can nominate business owners and property owners can only nominate property owners and a petition shall require the signature of no less than ten (10) members to nominate a member of the Board. Each nominee either shall be present at the annual meeting or shall consent to such nomination by a written document.

Voting

Per the by-laws, any properties for which BID taxes are over 60 days delinquent, may not vote nor may they nominate members to the board.

For each class of member, the ballot will list all the candidate names, and members will vote for the number of open slots in that category. For example, there are two business owner slots. All members will have the opportunity to vote for two candidates from the list of all business owner candidates.

Proxies

Proxy votes are allowed.

Pursuant to the BID bylaws, those interested in voting in the board elections by proxy can either contact the BID to request a proxy form, or can develop their own form, as long as it includes: the date of the meeting at which it is applicable (October 15) full names, addresses and the dated signatures of both the individual issuing the proxy and the witness(es) to the signature. The proxy voter can be anyone to whom the property or business owner designates to vote for them and DOES NOT have to be a member of the Adams Morgan Partnership BID. All proxy forms must meet all these criteria to be accepted.

The BID will have a proxy form available by fax, mail and by email.

The Adams Morgan Farmers Market is celebrating 40 consecutive years of sustainably grown produce with a special event on Saturday, September 28.  From 10:00am - 1:00pm, on the corner of 18th and Columbia Rd NW, join the owners of the Licking Creek Bend Farm for music, food, and entertainment.

An HEIRLOOM APPLE TASTING will offer a rare opportunity to taste varieties like Wolf River, Orange Pippen, and Sheep Nose from 10 to 11 am. Ward 1 Councilmember Jim Graham and others will deliver remarks beginning at 11 am.

Michael Tabor owns and has represented The Licking Creek Bend Farm on the corner of 18th St. and Columbia Rd NW since 1972. “My philosophy has been, and still is, to bring healthy, affordable produce to all the neighborhoods in DC regardless of income level,” said Tabor.

Visiting the market on Saturday mornings has become a tradition for Washingtonians. “Our loyal customers have created a ‘village square’ atmosphere where neighbors come to shop for their week’s fruits and vegetables, chat about recipes, and see old friends,” said Tabor.

“With farmers markets as popular as they are now, it’s hard to imagine a time when they weren’t part of the community – but Adams Morgan was really at the forefront here in DC,” said Kristen Barden, Executive Director of the Adams Morgan Partnership Business Improvement District (BID).

Adams Morgan PorchFest- October 5th -musicians still needed

Adams Morgan Showcases Local Musicians with PorchFest – October 5, 2013

Adams Morgan's deep musical heritage stretches from legendary jazz guitarist Charlie Byrd's appearances at the Showboat (and beyond) to the eclectic range of styles that can be heard here today.  PorchFest celebrates local talent by turning the front stoops and porches of a dozen Adams Morgan homes and businesses into performance spaces where local musicians will play for the community -- and for free!  The sounds will be spread throughout the streets of the neighborhood, making the stunning architecture there the backdrop as you follow your ears from house to house.

On October 5, 2013 from 2 to 6 pm, the stoops and porches of twelve Adams Morgan residences and businesses will serve as temporary stages for local musicians to share their talent (for free) with anyone who happens to be walking by.  “Adams Morgan has a rich musical heritage, and many of our residents are working musicians -- PorchFest is a family friendly way to share their talent with the community,” says Kristen Barden of the Adams Morgan Partnership BID.  Inspired by a similar effort in Somerville, MA and Takoma Park, MD.

Adams Morgan alleys are getting resurfaced


You may have noticed that a number of residential and commercial alleys are getting resurfaced in Adams Morgan. Here's information regarding the current schedule from DDOT:

1) "Fire House" Alley (behind the DC FEMS Firehouse on Lanier) - Concrete work complete.  Asphalt to start on 9-16-13.  Stamping to begin on or about 9-19-13
2) "Clydesdale" Alley - Excavation is complete.  Asphalt to start
after "Fire House" Alley asphalt Is complete.  Stamping to start soon after.
3) "Safeway" Alley (alley behind the Safeway store) -  Work will start on 9-16-13

4) 19th & Biltmore St. Alley (behind the 1800 block of Columbia Road, NW)- Work will start 9-16-13.

Tryst Celebrates 15th Anniversary

Tryst Coffeehouse, Bar & Lounge, located in Adams Morgan, recognized its 15th anniversary on September 1st.
From Sunday, September 15th through Monday, September 30th, Tryst will celebrate its 15 years in Adams Morgan by offering "15 Days of Tryst".
Tryst is bringing back its 1998 opening house coffee price – $1.50 for an in-house cup for these 15 days. In addition, Tryst will offer guests an assortment of popular throwback dishes and cocktails that have been featured throughout the years including the Danielle Salad, made with fresh mesclun greens, tomato, cucumber, K alamata olives, and feta cheese drizzled served with a house-made pear vinaigrette and the Mary Sandwich , made with turkey breast, Tryst’s Avocado Spread, tomatoes, lettuce, and white cheddar served on a sourdough baguette. Both menu items, like many others, are named after longtime loyal customers. In addition, Tryst is bringing back one snack offered at opening, Swedish Fish served in a large martini glass.
Throughout the 15 Days of Tryst, guests may participate in an interactive timeline featured on the walls of the restaurant, adding on to photos, old menus, and guests’ stories about their life-changing events that occurred at Tryst. The canvas boards depicting the last 15 years are hung on the far back wall so that guests can view the timelines and add their own memories.

When owner Constantine Stavropoulos , a Philadelphia native, moved to D.C. he sought to create a place where people go to connect with one another—a third place—away from home and the office.  “The Greeks have tavernas, the French have cafes, and the Germans have their beer pubs.  It’s…a place that kind of helps define you, the community.”  15 years later, Tryst is still just that to the Adams Morgan neighborhood, to the greater DC community, and even to first time DC visitors. Car Free Days - September 20-22

Pledge to go Car Free or Car-Lite on Expanded Car Free Days

September 20, 21, and/or 22

Car Free Days in the Washington D.C. metropolitan region will be celebrated over a three-day period from Friday, September 20th through Sunday, September 22nd.  Commuters, families, and individuals can pledge to go Car Free or share a ride and go Car-Lite for one, two, or all three days—participants who register their pledge at www.carfreemetrodc.org will be automatically entered in drawings for great prizes such as an iPad, annual Capital Bikeshare memberships, SmarTrip Cards loaded with fare, Flippin’ Pizza, and more .

Commuter Connections, a regional commuter transportation network coordinated by the National Capital Region Transportation Planning Board at the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments, organizes the annual event.  The three-day celebration allows participants to explore greener transportation available throughout the region and find the most efficient, affordable, and environmentally conscious way to get from one place to another. Reducing car use also helps lessen traffic congestion and improves air quality, while also saving your hard earned dollars at the gas pump, all by going car free or car-lite.

“Car Free Days are for everyone,” said Nicholas Ramfos, Commuter Connections Director. “The event is about joining the metropolitan Washington region in taking action to support your community, along with citizens from around the world, to make a positive impact on traffic congestion and lead others to explore how to reduce their carbon footprint by using transportation alternatives,” said Ramfos.

Whether commuting to work or school, or heading to a ball game or a picnic, using cost-effective, green ways to get there qualifies for participation in Car Free Day. Even commuters who already use transit—and those who don’t own a car—can take the free pledge to go Car Free or Car Lite.

Information on travel options for commuters and travelers is available at the Commuter Connections website .  Site visitors can set up a free account and request a ride match, make carpooling plans, and learn about other transportation opportunities to decrease the number of single- occupant vehicles on the road and congestion around the Washington metropolitan region.
