DC Employer Paid Leave Wage Tax to drop by nearly two-thirds

The employer-financed Paid Family Leave Program, the only program of the small number anywhere in the country that is solely funded by a tax on businesses, will be drastically reduced the employer wage tax.

Beginning July 1, the wage tax rate will decrease from 0.62% to only 0.26% for all D.C. employers.

The projected cost of the program when initiated was estimated to be significantly above the actually program financing need, as the employee ‘uptake’ and usage rate for the program has been much lower than originally anticipated.

Participating on the panel are Alexander Justice Moore, Chief Development Officer at DC Central Kitchen, who is a past NPF recipient, and Sonja Sanders Wells, Executive Vice President and Chief Lending Officer, City First Bank, who will provide financing best practices. Attendees will also have an opportunity to learn about DMPED’s Locally Made Manufacturing Grant Program.

About the Neighborhood Prosperity Fund

NPF will award up to $4M in total grants to incentivize community development, economic growth, and job creation by leveraging local funds to finance eligible projects that attract private investment to distressed communities. The minimum request per application is $250,000.

Locally Made Manufacturing Grant

The Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development (DMPED) invites the submission of proposals for the DC Local Equity, Access and Preservation Funds – Locally Made Manufacturing Grant Program (“Locally Made”).

Purpose

The Office of the Deputy Mayor recognizes manufacturing supply chains have become more complicated due to multiple suppliers, challenging international trade and import and export regulations, and the rapid acceleration of e-commerce demands and absorption, and the exacerbation of the COVID-19 global pandemic and public health emergency. Supply chains were distressed and, in some cases, disrupted. There is increasing need to manufacture and procure consumer goods locally.

Award

DMPED will award up to $500,000.00 total in grants to be disbursed to successful applicants of the Grant. Maximum request per application is $100,000.00.

Eligible businesses

Existing small business whose core business aligns with light manufacturing and is located either within or plans to move to a Great Street Corridor are eligible. See map here .

Application

The application to apply for the FY22 Neighborhood Prosperity Fund opened Friday, February 25, 2022 and closes on Friday, March 25, 2022 at 4:00 PM EST.
