1) Networking Lunch - July 4th - rescheduled to
July 11
Do you have a home based business in Adams Morgan? Do you want to start-up a home based business and are interested in learning from others who’ve done that successfully? Depending on level of interest, we will move this around to different restaurants. Hope to see many folks there on Friday July 11th (this month only). We will NOT meet in August and resume again in September.

2) Rat Abatement Walk through - July 4th - rescheduled to July 9th
As peviously announced, the monthly rat abatement walk-throughs began on April 4th. We will be meeting the FIRST FRIDAY of every month from April through November at 11:00 am with DOH Rat Abatement Specialist, Gerard Brown and his team of specialists. Each month we will focus on a different alley/street/problem area and DOH will treat for rats.
Because of the July 4th holiday, the next walk-through will be Wednesday July 9th at 11 am.
Everyone is welcome to join us. Please call Kristen at 202-997-0783 so she knows to look for you. We will meet at the corner of 18th and Belmont each week and walk from there.

Pepco's Work to Improve Reliability in Ward 1 will affect Adams Morgan beginning next week
Pepco will begin a project to increase the capacity of approximately 8,000
feet of underground cables at the Harvad Substation by
increasing capacity of underground feeders from 4kV to 13kV.
Work on the Harvard Conversion Project in Adams Morgan is limited to Champlain Street South of Columbia Road and north of Florida Avenue and in limited locations along the 1600 and 1700 blocks of Columbia Road, NW.
To achieve the conversion, new pipes (conduits) must be installed to house the new 13 kV cables. Next, crews will install the new cable. Finally, customers will be transitioned from the old feeder to the new feeder. During this phase of the project, we will construct approximately 4,000 feef of conduit, 11 manholes, and 2 switches. These upgrades will enhance reliability for customers in the area.
Pepco will begin manhole inspections on Champlain St.(starting at Columbia Road and working south to Florida Avenue) on Monday, June 23rd.
This is a highly mobile process where crews will be accessing manholes to determine if the existing duct banks (underground pipes) are viable. This process should take approximately 3 days, with crews working at each manhole for approximately one hour.
During this process, we will determine if any conduit locations need to be repaired prior to cable installation. If there are any conduit breakdowns, crews will excavate and repair the localized section of the conduit.
On July 7th, crews will begin the installation of manholes on Columbia Rd., which should take approximately 2 weeks to complete. We project to be working in the following locations:
7/7/14 - 7/18/14: In front of 1637 Columbia Rd., NW
7/7/14 - 7/18/14: In front of 1720 Columbia Rd., NW
Following completion of the manholes, crews will start installing the new underground conduit. Construction will typically take place Monday - Friday. Once they start installing the new underground conduit, customers should expect crews to take approximately 4 weeks to complete excavation and conduit installation on an average size block.
The traffic control plan on Columbia Rd. calls for our crews to mostly utilize 1 parking lane and 1 travel lane, except when they cross Ontario Rd. where crews will be required to utilize both parking lanes.
For further detail, between Champlain St. and Ontario Rd. we will be working on the south side of Columbia Rd. Crews will then cross to the north side of Columbia Rd. near Ontario Rd.
The contractor, Anchor Construction, will be providing door hanger notification to customers approximately 7 days in advance of construction.

DC Minimum wage changes on July 1
New Minimum Wage in the District of Columbia Will Be $9.50 per Hour for All Workers, Regardless of Size of Employer
Beginning July 1, the minimum wage in the District of Columbia will increase from $8.25 per hour to $9.50 per hour for all workers, regardless of size of employer. Mayor Vincent C. Gray signed the Minimum Wage Amendment Act of 2013 into law on January 15, 2014 after unanimous passage by the D.C. Council. The law also includes provisions to further increase the minimum wage in subsequent years.
Under the new law, the minimum wage is slated to increase by $1.00 on July 1 each year through 2016, capping at $11.50 per hour. Beginning July 1, 2017, the District's minimum wage will increase annually in proportion to the annual average increase in the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers in the Washington Metropolitan Statistical Area for the preceding 12 months.
The base minimum wage for tipped restaurant employees will remain at $2.77 per hour. However, if an employee's hourly tip earnings (averaged weekly) added to the base minimum wage do not equal the District's full minimum wage, the employer must pay the difference.
Over the next few weeks, the Department of Employment Services (DOES) will produce and mail new D.C. Minimum Wage workplace posters to all District employers. Every employer subject to the provisions of the Act must post the D.C. Minimum Wage poster in or about the premises at which any employee covered is employed.

New speed camera on 18th Street - Watch your speed
WTOP reminded us on Monday that there are fifteen new traffic enforcement cameras will begin sending out citations at the end of this week in D.C.
The 14 speed cameras plus one camera that spots over-sized trucks using residential streets have been issuing warnings to motorists. Fines could be as high as $300.

Movie Nights at Marie Reed Field with PTA - ONE LEFT on June 24th
The first and seconde movies of Adams Morgan Movie Nights were a huge success thanks to overwhelming support from the community. Over 400 people were in attendance each nite and we overheard more than a few comments about the new field at Marie Reed being one of the best outdoor movie venues in the city!
Our next movie is Tuesday June 24th and features Wes Anderson’s “Rushmore” (“a particular treat for its skewed, hilarious memories of a cutthroat boyhood" -- NYT).
