2024 Annual Meeting and Board Elections
|
Adams Morgan Partnership Business Improvement District’s (AMPBID) Annual Meeting will be held on Tuesday, March 12th, from 8:30am to 11:00am
at
Venture X
, 1763 Columbia Rd NW. A breakfast buffet will be available from 8:30am and presentations will begin at 9:30 am. Contact

Board Elections:
AMPBID holds elections every year at our annual meeting in March. The board consists of 15 seats, nine of which are reserved for commercial property owners and six for business owners. Board members are elected to serve three-year terms (unless they are replacing a board member who resigned before the end of their term). This year's election will be for 6 positions on the Board of Directors (3 property owners and 3 business owners).
The nominations committee has concluded their work and no further board nominations will be accepted for this election.
Postcards with information about the AMPBID Annual Meeting were mailed to all AMPBID members earlier this month.

: What makes your business unique? Tell us more about Shanklin Hall.
Nick
: Shanklin Hall is a social club centered at the intersection of community, creativity, and wellness. But at our core, we’re a family run business with a common mission to provide safe space, great vibes, and new opportunities for those who exemplify all that DC has to offer. As DC natives ourselves, I believe our authenticity in this approach stands out above all. My co-founders are Camille Hall, Imani Shanklin Roberts, Maia Shanklin Roberts, and Tau Shanklin Roberts.
AMPBID
: Tell us about a defining moment in your professional and/or personal life. Did you have an ah-ha moment that inspired you?
Nick
: To be honest, my defining moments came during a time of collective struggle, when we were at the peak of the pandemic in quarantine. It was during this time, shortly after I had been laid off from my last full-time corporate role, that I realized I could no longer “play it safe”. It happened to be around this time that our small circle of friends began to think critically around what our city would look like upon reopening, and how we could play an active role in reinvigorating the social scene for our like-minded peers. These ideas would eventually lead to the development of Shanklin Hall.

: What is the best career advice you’ve received? What is your favorite piece of advice to give?
Nick
: The best career advice I’ve received is to always be equipped to pivot when I no longer feel inspired about the work I’m doing or its overall value in my life. Similarly, my favorite piece of advice to give would be to prioritize your mental, physical, and emotional wellness, and try not to compromise your core values for the sake of a bottom line. Admittedly, I have to remind myself to follow my own advice on a regular basis.

: What’s your favorite part about the Adams Morgan community and why?
Nick
: I’m always appreciative of the rich history and diversity of Adams Morgan. Throughout my years growing up in DC, I’ve maintained an affinity for the area. Whether being stimulated by the art and distinct building aesthetics as a child, having some of my first nightlife experiences as a young adult, or currently building relationships with some of the neighboring business owners, there’s always something inspiring to take with me after time spent in Adams Morgan.
AMPBID
: What’s something your customers may not know about you and/or your business that might surprise them?
Nick
: I’m not sure if most of our customers realize how close of a bond we share as co-founders, even outside of the sibling relationships within our group. The dynamics of scaling a business between loved ones can be challenging, particularly when our entire team is still balancing full-time careers, but the positives far outweigh the struggle. It feels great to have accomplished something so intentional as a team, while helping each other learn a new industry.

: Is there a Black writer, podcast host, Black-owned business, or someone else you’d like to spotlight/give a shout out to that has inspired you?
Nick
: I’m constantly inspired by stories of historical Black social clubs that played active roles and had profound impacts on their communities. We’re honored to play our part in carrying on tradition. I also think it’s important to shine a light on our peers who are currently breaking down barriers of their own in DC and beyond. I think of folks like Angel Gregorio and her work investing in Black entrepreneurship at Spice Suite/Black + Forth; Chef Keem Hughley and his Afrofuturist culinary innovations at Bronze; Elliott Johnson of Soul Mega brewing, and Lafayette Barnes leading the Washington Informer Bridge along with other new media endeavors. But perhaps most importantly, I’m constantly inspired by the diverse creativity and ingenuity of our great staff at Shanklin Hall.

This is a free, informal event that offers businesses an opportunity to chat with BID staff, ask questions, learn about community news, introduce yourself, connect with neighbors, and more. Opening Friday: Labor of Fire & Maher’s Mark
|
For the first time since undergoing extensive renovations, The
DC Arts Center
will reopen its gallery spaces to the public on February 16. The DCAC’s newly refurbished galleries will feature two exhibitions: Labor of Fire in the Main Gallery and Maher’s Mark in the Nano Gallery.
Curated by Benedetta Castrioto as part of DCAC’s Curatorial Initiative, Labor of Fire investigates the economics and politics of the art world, featuring sculpture, multimedia installations, performance, and time-based media.

Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon returning March 16
|
This a reminder that the Rock ‘n’ Roll Washington DC Half Marathon and 5k is on March 16, 2024.
The race route has not changed since last year and will come into Adams Morgan via Calvert Street and the Ellington Bridge, turn east onto Columbia Rd., continuing to Harvard St. where it will turn right and continue into Columbia Heights.

Metro wants to hear from you
|
Metro asks for public input on FY25 Budget including service cuts and fare hikes as funding conversations continue.
Facing an unprecedented $750 million budget shortfall in the coming year, Metro is asking the public to provide feedback on the proposed Fiscal Year 2025 (FY25) Budget which includes drastic service cuts, fare increases, layoffs, and other severe cost cutting measures.
The $4.5 billion capital and operating budget proposal provides a worst-case scenario; however, Metro’s funding partners are currently working through legislation that may reduce some of the most detrimental fare and service changes proposed.
The public is encouraged to review the proposed FY25 budget and provide comments through our online survey tool, or by attending an in-person or virtual public hearing. All comments should be submitted no later than Tuesday, March 5, at 5 p.m.
