Adams Morgan Day planners to visit businesses
on July 22 and 23
|
Adams Morgan Day 2019 volunteers will stop by neighborhood businesses beginning at 5:30 p.m. July 22 and July 23 to discuss plans for the festival, and opportunities for participation and sponsorship. The 41st annual event is a celebration of the awesome residents and businesses that make this diverse neighborhood so unique and the festival so special!
Donations at any level are critical to a fun, safe, and well-attended event. Sponsorship opportunities start at $500 and can increase to accommodate those who are interested in additional advertising, premium booths, and the ability to name a featured part of the festival. Volunteers will answer questions about the festival and encourage folks to sign up to participate. We hope all businesses contribute at some level to make AdMo Day 2019 the best one yet! Adams Morgan PorchFest returns on October 5!
|
DC's most creative music festival returns this fall with dozens of local bands. On
Saturday, October 5
, we'll turn over a dozen porches and stoops into stages for the day for
Adams Morgan PorchFest
. In 2018, we hosted 57 performances on 16 stages, and we're already working on bringing back your favorite bands. See you there!

Champlain Street closure on Saturday, July 20 for crane event at The Line Hotel
|
A mobile crane will be in use at The Line Hotel this upcoming Saturday, July 20th for work being performed to the mechanical equipment that serves their restaurants’ kitchens. The use of the crane will necessitate a closure of Champlain Street between Kalorama and Euclid Streets from 7am to 7pm on Saturday only.

As part of Mayor Muriel Bowser’s “Back to Basics” strategy to keep the District looking its best, the DC Department of Public Works (DPW) recently unveiled its new “Not in My DC” litter prevention campaign. The campaign includes ads on Metro trains, buses and bus shelters featuring notable District residents and business owners. It will also include an enforcement blitz.
Be on the lookout for new “No Litter” and “No Dumping” street signs. Encourage your neighbors to keep streets and sidewalks clean by requesting a free, “Please Be A Good Neighbor. New SelectPasses and more Metro service are here
|
As of July 1, 2019, all Metrorail passes now come with FREE Metrobus service. If you use your SmartBenefits® to buy a pass, you'll get discounted fares and be able to commute tax free. It’s the best of both worlds!
You can use the SmartBenefits® Transit Pass Benefit to buy 3-day, 7-day, and unlimited monthly Metrorail/Metrobus combo passes, as well as regional bus-only passes. If you're unfamiliar with the Transit Pass Benefit and how to allocate your funds to it, please contact your HR department.
In addition to more affordable passes, WMATA has added more service! All Red Line trains now run to the end of the line between Shady Grove and Glenmont instead of turning back at Silver Spring during rush hour. On the Yellow Line, service has been extended to Greenbelt instead of turning around at Fort Totten or Mt Vernon Square. This change doubles rush hour service at nine stations north of Mt Vernon Square to reduce crowding conditions.

Guidance on Sports Wagering at ABC-Licensed Establishments
|
Since the addition of any sports wagering kiosks or mobile terminals to an Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC)-licensed establishment may constitute a “substantial change” in operation, it would require advance approval from the ABC Board (Board) in accordance with District Official Code § 25–762.
Notice of all received applications that the Board considers to be a substantial change will be given to the parties outlined in § 25-421 including affected Advisory Neighborhood Commissions (ANC). Applicants are also required to post two placards in a conspicuous place on the outside of the establishment during the 45-day protest period. Applications may be protested and the steps for doing so are detailed at
abra.dc.gov
.
The Board will consider applications on a case-by-case basis. If approved, the requesting applicant must also secure a Sports Wagering Operator license through the Office of Lottery and Gaming which they coordinate autonomously.

Rat Riddance Rodent and Vector Control Academy
|
The Rat Riddance Rodent and Vector Control Academy will provide participants with classroom exercises. In addition, participants will be given the opportunity to demonstrate what they have learned by conducting field exercises. The academy will have presenters from DC Department of Energy and Environment, Department of Public Works, and Univar Environmental Sciences. The presenters will share information on pesticide regulations, new products, new techniques, and sanitation controls.

Dealing with suspicious packages
|
Together we can help keep our communities safe—if you see something that is suspicious, out of place, or doesn't look right, say something. (Find out more about the "
If You See Something, Say Something®
" campaign.) A suspicious item is any item (e.g., bag, package, vehicle, etc.) that is reasonably believed to contain explosives, an improvised explosive device (IED), or other hazardous material that requires a bomb technician and/or specialized equipment to further evaluate it. Examples that could indicate a bomb include unexplainable wires or electronics, other visible bomb-like components, and unusual sounds, vapors, mists, or odors. Generally speaking, anything that is Hidden, Obviously suspicious, and not Typical (HOT) should be deemed suspicious. In addition, potential indicators for a bomb are threats, placement, and proximity of the item to people and valuable assets.

Remain calm.
-
Do NOT touch, tamper with, or move the package, bag, or item.

Notify authorities immediately:
-
Notify your facility supervisor, such as a manager, operator, or administrator, or follow your facility's standard operating procedure. (See below for assistance with developing a plan for your facility or location.)

Call 9-1-1 or your local law enforcement if no facility supervisor is available.
-
Explain why it appears suspicious.
-
Follow instructions. Facility supervisors and/or law enforcement will assess the situation and provide guidance regarding shelter-in-place or evacuation.
-
If no guidance is provided and you feel you are in immediate danger, calmly evacuate the area. Distance and protective cover are the best ways to reduce injury from a bomb.
-
Be aware. There could be other threats or suspicious items.
Every situation is unique and should be handled in the context of the facility or environment in which it occurs. Facility supervisors and law enforcement will be in the best position to determine if a real risk is posed and how to respond. Refer to the
